Book Spaces for Shaping the Nation

Download or read book Spaces for Shaping the Nation written by Marina Beck and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As spaces of knowledge, the national museums and galleries of nineteenth-century Europe played an important role both in the shaping of nation-states and the education of their populations. In this context, such institutions sought to convey the history of the people, for example by displaying pictorial cycles of important scenes from their history, exhibiting objects associated with certain formative events, or arraying period rooms to promote a specific impression of the past. The contributions to this volume examine the purposes and educational strategies of national museums and national galleries via case studies from Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Download or read book The Convict and the Soldier written by John P F Lynch and published by Sid Harta Publishers. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael, convicted of a minor crime, is sent to Van Diemen's Land to serve his sentence; John (the soldier) is involved in a minor scandal that means he must resign his commission. He decides to pursue a new military career in the Colonies. Paths cross, families join and hardships are overcome. This is a story of courage, seized opportunities and new beginnings. This novel is an insight into the life and times of an Irish convict and English soldier during the 1850s. The reader journeys with them from Ireland's County Clare and Cumberland in England, to the Australian Colonies of Van Diemen's Land with its penal system and finally to the Victorian bushlands. Generally historically and geographically accurate, John Lynch has lived up to his previous local history publications, by weaving true tales within these pages.

Book A Lack of Offensive Spirit

Download or read book A Lack of Offensive Spirit written by Alan MacDonald and published by Alan MacDonald. This book was released on 2008 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A Lack of Offensive Spirit?' is a companion volume to Alan MacDonald's recently revised book 'Pro Patria Mori - the 56th (1st London) Division at Gommecourt, 1st July 1916'. The attack of the 46th (North Midland) Division at Gommecourt on the first day of the Battle of the Somme is one of the most controversial incidents of the Great War. The men were effectively accused of cowardice ("A lack of offensive spirit") and of being drunk and the Division was the only one subject to a Court of Inquiry into its conduct. Their commander, Maj. Gen. Eddie Stuart Wortley, was the only General sacked as a result of the catastrophe of the 1st July 1916, a day when the British Army suffered its worst casualties in a single day in its entire history. `A Lack of Offensive Spirit?' tells the story of Stuart Wortley and the 46th Division from the opening of the war, through the tragedy of the Hohenzollern Redoubt and then, day by day, through the preparations for the attack on Gommecourt. The attack itself is described using the dozens of eyewitness reports collected after the battle as well as official documents and post-war recollections and memoirs. The German perspective on the battle is also extensively covered with information drawn from numerous German unit histories. The conduct of the Court of Inquiry and of Stuart Wortley's desperate efforts to clear his name are covered in detail as well as the tragic fate of the hundreds of officers and men missing, dead and wounded. `A Lack of Offensive Spirit?' is fully indexed, contains over 20 maps and plans, 45 photographs and contains extensive appendices (including a Roll of Honour of both British and German dead).

Book A Book of Famous Myths and Legends

Download or read book A Book of Famous Myths and Legends written by Thomas J. Shahan and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ages ago, when the world was young, people did not know as much of nature and its secrets as we do now. Moreover, they did not have the art of writing, or if known to them, it was used only by a few, and its value for handing down the facts of history was not clearly understood. Thus, two great fields of knowledge, the world of nature and the world of history, were known only in a dim and vague way. Yet men and women were even then anxious to find out the causes of what they saw about them in nature, as well as to know whence and how they came to their native lands, through what journeys and labors, who were their ancient leaders in war, the builders of their cities, the founders of their laws and customs, and the like. In this book, the editor tells us of Beowulf, Rip van Winkle, Odysseus, the Argonauts, King Arthur and many tales more.
