Download or read book The Armour Engineer Vol 9 written by Armour Institute Of Technology and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Armour Engineer, Vol. 9: The Quarterly Technical Publication of the Student Body of Armour Institute of Technology, Chicago, Illinois, November, 1916 This is a period in Industry when there are preponderant advantages in large organizations. At the same time there is also a feeling among a certain class of men, particularly young men preparing for the race and older men who have not found themselves. that organization and the individual are inimical. It is not questioned that there is outward evidence, indeed too much of it, to fortify a dissatisfied mind in this impression, especially when a large view is taken (1) of the rapid rise of these big companies, (2) the fact that they are perforce made up of MEN, and (3) that there are only too often five-thousand-dollar men in ten-thousand-dollar places with all the consequent narrow vision, selfishness and straining for result. It may be useful therefore at times to get into the mountains to clarify the vision and to see the large outlines of things in their right perspective. When one analyzes this word - organization - it is found to be made up primarily of "organ" which refers to the individual - a function or instrument peculiarly fitted for a certain work or use. And a practical study of this subject will lend a strange emphasis in all its aspects upon this fundamental - The Individual. Organizing is the art and science of fitting organs each particularly meant for certain functions into a sympathetic and co-ordinated force for a definite larger purpose with a proper provision for its constant renewal. ALUM_NI ASSOCIATION The Board of Managers of the Alumni Association at a recent meeting drew up plans for the annual spring reunion. Last year, it will be remembered, the meeting was held during Junior 'eek--on Circus Day--and it was such an enjoyable success that it was decided to hold this year's meeting during unior /Veek. The date is Thursday, May 10. ' The custom of holding the Spring meeting at the Institute, ' established some time ago, gains greater popularity year by year and has met the hearty approval of the graduates interested in Alumni Association affairs who can and do make their annual visit to the Alma Mater in a body. Setting the date during Junior VVeek has its advantages, because it links together some 'of the activities of alumni and under-graduates. It gives the Senior a chance to get a slant at a representative gathering of the men who are out of school and whose ranks he is about to join. Likewise the alumni have the opportunity of seeing, meeting and welcoming the graduating class. C ' The afternoon circus performance will begin at 3 o'clock and all alumni who can take an afternoon oPf will find it worth while to wend their way towards Ogden Field to seeithe Juniors in their three-ring affair. The banquet will be held in the gymnasium at 6:30 p. m. Preparations are being made for entertainment by E. H. Freeman, Master of Ceremonies, and announcements of the complete program will be mailed to all alumni in a few days. The price per plate probably will be $1.25. Remember the date--May 1o--afternoon and evening. If you can't come in time for the Circus, at least don't miss the banquet. ALUMNI NOTES F. C. Zanzig, '09, is now electrical engineer, isconsin Telephone Company, ...

Download or read book The Armour Engineer Vol 11 written by Armour Institute Of Technology and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Armour Engineer, Vol. 11: The Quarterly Technical Publication of the Armour Institute of Technology, Chicago, Illinois An independent 24-inch line was to be run to the Portsmouth Navy Yard, while the Norfolk and Portsmouth, Berkley and Suffolk systems were to be tied in by a 20-inch subaqueous line across the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River. In this way it would be possible to augment Norfolk's supply by a pumpage of 5,000,000 gallons per day and assist her in supplying the demands of the immense army and navy bases, hospitals and other government projects. Further provision was made for placing a venturi meter at both Norfolk and Berkley ends of the subaqueous 20-inch supply line, so that the demands of Norfolk could be metered or vice versa in case of a breakdown on the Portsmouth, Berkley and Suffolk end. This project is then strictly a government enterprise brought on by war time needs. The construction work was divided into the Suffolk District, comprising divisions A, B, C and D, and the Portsmouth District including divisions E, F. G and H. The work and scope of these divisions will be described in further details under their respective headings. Division "A"-Lake Cohoon Dam. Lake Cahoon has a drainage area of 30.1 square miles, which, when raised from elevation 10.0 to elevation 2S.0 will provide a reserve of 1,700,000,000 gallons. The dam and spillway arc located bn the southern end of the lake. The spillway presents some unique features of design, inasmuch as it is perhaps the only one of its kind in existence, instead of the usual type whereby the downstream side is made ogee shaped, it was broken up into a series of cascade (see Fig. I). This reduces the excessive pressure on the earth foundations by spreading the base. It is 300 ft. long and contains 2,000 ubic yards of concrete with 49.5 tons of reinforcement. A cort-: rete corewall was built containing 600 cubic yards of concrete md 22,500 square feet of rip rap, having side slope of 4.1. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Armour Engineer, Vol. 26: Student Technical Publication of Armour Institute of Technology; November, 1934 The result of Mr. Stevens' work was the selection of a pass which connected the head waters of Nason Creek with Tye River. The pass had an elevation of 4059 feet. Mr. Stevens selected as the maximum grade of the permanent line which was to be located down. Hill on each side from the portals of a projected tunnel, miles long. The summit was to be at the east por tal of this tunnel at an elevation of 3383 feet. The opening of the through line could not be delayed; therefore a switchback route was located over the mountains. This switchback route handled the through traffic of the rail road until December, 1900, when the mile tunnel was completed.
