Book The Late Colonial Indian Army

Download or read book The Late Colonial Indian Army written by Pradeep Barua and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-11-04 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian Army was one of the most important colonial institutions that the British created. From its humble origins as a mercantile police force to a modern contemporary army in the Second World War, this institution underwent many transitions. This book examines the Indian Army during the later colonial era from the First Afghan War in 1839 to Indian independence in 1947. During this period, the Indian Army developed from an internal policing force, to a frontier army, and then to a conventional western style fighting force capable of deployment to overseas’ theaters. These transitions resulted in significant structural and doctrinal changes in the army. The doctrines, and tactics honed during this period would have a dramatic impact upon the post-colonial armies of India and Pakistan. From civil-military relations to fighting and structural doctrines, the Indian and Pakistani armies closely reflect the deep-seated impact of decades of evolution during the late colonial era.

Download or read book Medieval Indian Armies 1 written by David Nicolle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully illustrated study explores the armies of the Hindu, Buddhist and Jain states within what are now India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal during the period AD 500–1500, as well as Afghanistan until the early 13th century AD. Following the emergence of a distinct 'medieval Indian' civilization in the Late Classical and Early Medieval periods, there was a prolonged struggle between this civilization and that of the eastern Islamic world, concluding with the rise of the Mughal Empire at the start of the 16th century. In this fully illustrated study, David Nicolle investigates the traditions and enduring conservatism of non-Islamic medieval Indian warfare, notably evident in recruitment patterns and the significance of archery and cavalry. The role and impact of war-elephants, both positive and negative, are also considered, as well as the influence of climate and weather (notably the seasonal monsoon) on warfare in this region. As well as assessing arms and armour – contrasting the advanced technology and high status of Indian weapons (especially swords) with the remarkable lack of metallic armour in the region during this period – the author also explores siege warfare and riverine and naval warfare in South Asia. This book assesses the contributing factors identified by those who have sought to explain why the huge wealth and substantial populations of the traditional non-Islamic Indian states did not prevent their persistent failure in the face of Islamic invasion and conquest.

Book excerpt: Divergent and variegated in many respects were the numerous races that were enlisted into our Indian Army till the first decade of the last century and from which our present day army derives its colour and variety of uniformed men and their respective regiments. These military races were different in creed, in customs, in temperament and in traditions. This book deals with the erstwhile Armies of India from the army of the East India Company to the Indian Armies under the Crown to the Military Races of India and even the Armies of the Native States. The author s masterly review of the methods by which the existing army has attained its present state of composition greatly facilitates a proper understanding of the necessity of carefully studying the various characteristics of several Indian races. Field Marshal Earl Roberts has Written a very appreciative foreword to this extraordinary effort at documenting the history and culture behing the Great Armies of India.
