Book Roundhead General

Download or read book Roundhead General written by John Eric Adair and published by Alan Sutton Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir William Waller has been largely neglected in histories of the English Civil War and yet in 1645, when Waller had commanded a Parliamentary army for over two years, Oliver Cromwell was still one of his subordinates. Waller achieved distinction as a Parliamentarian General in the early years of the war, successively becoming Major General in the West, General of an army to be raised largely by the Independents, and Major General of the Southern Association. His career as a soldier was marked by several quite significant achievements, notably the first major defeat of the King's cavalry at Cheriton in March 1644. An early advocate, from his own bitter experiences, of the need to remodel the armies of Parliament, Waller accepted the military reforms introduced in the autumn of 1644, and after brief service as a 'caretaker' in the West he retired to civilian life. Besides containing the first continuous narrative of Waller's campaigns, this book includes an introductory analysis of his army and a discussion of his political significance in the struggle between moderates and radicals in Parliament. It also examines Waller's emergence after the war as leader of the Presbyterian party, his expulsion from Parliament and imprisonment and, finally, his support for the Restoration of 1660.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 23 September 1642 Prince Rupert's cavalry triumphed outside Worcester in the first major clash on the English Civil War. Almost precisely nine years later, on 3 September 1651, that war was won by Oliver Cromwell's famous Ironsides outside the same city and in part upon the same ground. Stuart Reid provides a detailed yet readable new military history – the first to be published for over twenty years – of the three conflicts between 1642 and 1651 known as the English Civil War. Prince Rupert, Oliver Cromwell Patrick Ruthven, Alexander Leslie and Sir Thomas Fairfax all play their parts in this fast-moving narrative. At the heart of the book are fresh interpretations, not only of the key battles such as Marston Moor in 1644, but also of the technical and economic factors which helped shape strategy and tactics, making this a truly comprehensive study of one of the most famous conflicts in British history. This book is a must for all historians and enthusiasts of seventeenth-century English history.

Book Charles I and Oliver Cromwell

Download or read book Charles I and Oliver Cromwell written by Maurice Ashley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-30 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this book compares and contrasts the characters and careers of two great protagonists in the English Civil War and its aftermath. The book shows how Charles I and Oliver Cromwell were confronted with the same problems and therefore, to a surprisingly large extent, were obliged to deal with them in much the same kind of way. The book re-examines their military methods, their approaches to religion, their diplomatic manoeuvres, their domestic policies and the manner in which they handled their parliaments. Above all, it considers how their vastly different personalities determined their actions. Finally it debates how far a revolution, of which Cromwell was the instrument and Charles the victim, can be said to have taken place in the mid-seventeenth century or whether what occurred was simply a political rebellion sparked off by religious passion.

Book Looking Into Providences

Download or read book Looking Into Providences written by Raymond Waddington and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2012-10-19 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of providence in Paradise Lost? In Looking into Providences, Raymond B. Waddington provides the first examination of this engaging subject. He explores the variety of implicit organizational structures or ‘designs’ that govern Paradise Lost, and looks in-depth at the ‘trials,’ or testing situations, which require interpretation, choice, and action from its characters. Waddington situates the poem within the context of providentialism’s centrality to seventeenth-century thought and life, arguing that Milton’s own conception of providence was deeply influenced by the theology of Jacob Arminius. Using Milton’s Arminian conception of free will, he then looks at the providential trials experienced by angels and humans. Finally, the work explores the ways in which providentialism infiltrates various kinds of discourse, ranging from military to medical, and from political to philosophical.
