Book excerpt: On a planet named Frandis is the large continent of Traztajor. Set in the great sea, it is divided into eight different countries. Kangalor is the largest of these countries. The population is mostly hardworking, peaceful peasants ruled from Orvain City by an indolent, pleasure-loving Satrup. Zakard Lei, the ruthless and power-seeking leader of the Das Blaazd Society of Thaumaturgery, which is based in the upland sector of Kangalor, rises up against the rest of the country, seeking to enslave and bend the population to his will. The Maj society of Thaumaturgery, led by the respected and phenomenally powerful Zalund Arj, joins with the independent thaumaturges to defend and protect all the people of Kangalor. The Satrup sits in his palace, demanding expensive entertainments while refusing to take any interest in his countrys difficulties. His courageous younger brother, Prince Lomax, joins the generals of the Kangalor Army. On the borderland, at the head of his troops, he defends the country and its citizens with a bloody sword. Courageous agents enter the Das Blaazd territories to send back information about Leis invasion strategies and troop movements, only to be tracked and endangered by Leis murderous counteragents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homeric Chalkis is situated on the coast of Aetolia at the very ‘gateway’ of the Gulf of Patras. The foundation occurred during an important period in early Greek history when trade and movement of peoples along the Gulf intensified with a resulting strong pull to the coast. Well-preserved stratigraphies date the foundation to the early seventh century BC and testify to a flourishing settlement in the sixth century lasting till the early fifth century BC when the site was temporarily given up. Walls and roads follow a rectilinear layout. A broad spectre of pottery shapes and wares attest to innovative local and regional workshops already from the onset of the settlement. Alongside the pottery, tools for complex textile manufacture were found in all houses, among which were many small, pyramidal loom weights and spools. These findings indicated a high degree of experimental weaving techniques and demonstrated how the courtyard house, as a new house model, was particularly well suited to accommodate this manufacture, probably mantels. The results therefore offer important new evidence on relations between gender behaviour and Greek houses. The catalogue is richly illustrated with profile drawings, plans, black-and- white and colour photos and accompanied by discussions of the material.

Book Glorification Spells from a Priestly Milieu in Ancient Egypt

Download or read book Glorification Spells from a Priestly Milieu in Ancient Egypt written by Ann-Katrin Gill and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-05 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glorification Spells from a Priestly Milieu in Ancient Egypt presents the first comprehensive edition of an ancient Egyptian ritual composition entitled the Glorification Recited on Each Due Occasion of the Embalming Place, a collection of glorification spells attested in five papyri from around 300 BCE. Arguably the most significant extensive ancient Egyptian ritual text still awaiting systematic study, its constituent spells preserve and transmit religious ideas which resonated with the ancient Egyptians for millennia. The collection and adaptation of these spells into a single coherent ritual work bear witness to the remarkable creativity of the priests and scribes of the latest periods of Egyptian history. Much of this process may be attributable to members of a single family or a small circle of colleagues living in a particular place during a circumscribed period of time, highlighting the importance of individual or small-group agency, not only in preserving and transmitting religious traditions, but in transforming them as well. Glorification spells were recited in the embalming place and elsewhere. They were intended, not only to revivify those to whom they were addressed, restoring their mental and physical faculties, but to secure their elevation to a new, exalted status, that of an akh, or glorified spirit, as well. This status integrated the beneficiary within the hierarchy of gods and other glorified spirits in the next world. This volume places the Glorification Recited on Each Due Occasion of the Embalming Place in its wider historical, religious, and sociological context. It includes a hieroglyphic synopsis of all known examples of the spells, and a transliteration and translation of the copy of them preserved in P. Louvre N. 3129, the type version. In a line-by-line commentary, variant readings in the parallels are recorded and salient points of interest, whether grammatical, lexicographical, historical, topographical, or theological, are discussed. An extensive glossary, a general bibliography, an index, and photographic reproductions are provided, alongside hieroglyphic transcriptions of the papyri.

Book The Kitan Language and Script

Download or read book The Kitan Language and Script written by Daniel Kane and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kitans established the Liao dynasty in northern China, which lasted for over two centuries (916-1125). In this survey the reader will find what is currently known about the Kitan language and scripts. The language was very likely distantly related to Mongolian, with two quite different scripts in use. A few generations after their state was defeated, almost all trace of the Kitan spoken and written languages disappeared, except a few words in Chinese texts. Over the past few decades, however, inscriptions from the tombs of the Liao emperors and the Kitan aristocracy have been at least partially deciphered, resulting in a significant increase of our knowledge of the Kitan lexicon, morphology and syntax.
