Book The Area of Sound Called the Subtone

Download or read book The Area of Sound Called the Subtone written by Noah Eli Gordon and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. The Area of Sound Called the Subtone, Gordon's second full-length book, won the 2004 Sawtooth Poetry Prize, judged by Claudia Rankine. Rankine writes, "Noah Eli Gordon is a master of the shift between an epigrammatic and aphoristic line. Each utterance is a glance that implodes rhetorical strategies so spectacularly that the spray of intelligence that lingers in this reader's mind is not much different from a cooling shower from an illegally opened fire hydrant. Witty, vivid, and very, very vital, Gordon has entered a higher frequency"-Claudia Rakine.

In this winner of the 2006 Green Rose Prize "You can fairly hear the pinging of the world and all its parts-noises of earth's objects rubbing against each other and the spheres. In this ebullient music find the translation of colors, shapes, space, speech, integrity, destruction. It's as if the world's most believable cape were thrown back and below we found not a sham of seasons but all the body's most dynamic possibilities"--Eleni Sikelianos.

Kate Greenstreet would like you to read this book as if you had found it left behind on the empty bus seat next to you--a document not directly addressing the question "Why do we make art," but one that notices that one does make art, despite conditions, and that one would regardless. THE LAST 4 THINGS comes with a DVD of two movies created by the author. "A poem is made by composition, by putting things together, and when you read this book your hands tingle. THE LAST 4 THINGS brings craftsmanship to reverie; it turns dreaming into meaningful work. Book Days and Works

Download or read book Days and Works written by Rachel Blau DuPlessis and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Literary Nonfiction. Following the 26-year poetic odyssey of her long poem Drafts, Rachel Blau DuPlessis invites readers, with DAYS AND WORKS, to embark with her on not just one but a plurality of voyages. In 2014, drawing on a 1914 translation of Hesiod's Works and Days appearing at the beginning of World War I, DuPlessis began to write, bent on dealing--as did Hesiod--with the insoluble oddity of being in the world and in our time. Both works are built of evocative awe and practical "life" advice, in which conflicting sensations of the textures of historical time, personal time, cosmological time all fold together, in all their contradictions and vectors of stimuli--desired and painful. DuPlessis's work, with rips of feeling, newspaper clippings, and senses of historical fate, represents the oddity of all these registers involving us in different emotional twists. How can so many opposite things and washes of multiple emotions occupy the same daily space? Are these movements through the highly saturated consciousness of modern life "a lexicon? A listing, a relocation?" DuPlessis answers in both form and language--with a sense of the generative and constant "between" in this work expanding the everyday into a mini-encyclopedic poem on an intimate scale. The text offers an evocative political poetics including feminist, eco- poetical and anti-war thinking. It is an intense and generous book.

Book Pleasure

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian Teare
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 96 pages

Download or read book Pleasure written by Brian Teare and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. LGBT Studies. Like Tennyson's In Memoriam, Teare's book sees within a personal loss evidence of an epochal shift at work, a shift at once historical, political, and cosmological. Asserting the lover's body as a lost Eden, revisiting again and again the narrative of "the fall" its iconic imagery as well as Gnostic reinterpretations the book also records the eventual end of mourning and a return to the ecology not of myth but of the literal weather and landscape of California. The book is haunted throughout by the task of "writing the disaster" of AIDS; its lyrics link emergency to inquiry in an attempt to make a memorial "in language sufficient/to pain: not in itself the world: the thought of it."

Book Sonnets to the Humans

Download or read book Sonnets to the Humans written by T. Zachary Cotler and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Winner of the 2012 Sawtooth Poetry Prize. "This is a wizard's handiwork.... SONNETS TO THE HUMANS stands as one unstoppered bottle for a host of genii, lightning-Nimrods, angel-demons, AEnglisch as demotic, ash as egg. It's a brilliant, intimate, intricate, careening, calibrating, strangely moving collection of 49 poems--pieces introduced and linked by patches of the prose narration of 'a fictional poet who lived in the 21st century' and bore the name of Vishvamitra.... Thus we embark, in part, on an old story--but one re-generated here in ways unheralded, unheard-of. It becomes a futuristic lover's lyrical lament and a recapitulation (or enactment) of the Babel tale; (even thus largely to restrict its scope can only be reductive: it's a book with a very long half-life)."--Heather McHugh, judge of the 2012 Sawtooth Poetry Prize

Book Song of a Living Room

Download or read book Song of a Living Room written by Brigitte Byrd and published by Ahsahta Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Invoking theorists, philosophers, and such poets as John Berryman and Lyn Hejinian, the poems of Brigitte Byrd's third book ask the reader to follow a ribbon threaded among music, movies, poetics, and an unlinear sense of time. Its prose poems recount and deconstruct a relationship between two central characters experiencing this journey "Like an authentic vision. Like slipping into a Celtic knot. Like a new perception of space." "Brigitte Byrd writes dense, lovely, provocative poems. Their prose forms and often rational diction are an entrancing shell game showing and shifting and showing again the true passion and lyricism of her work. In this way, she illuminates the eternal struggle that our minds and our bodies and our hearts are always engaged in with each other and with themselves. SONG OF A LIVING ROOM is a splendid collection"--Robert Olen Butler.

These are not the poems borne of quiet contemplation; they are edgy and lurid, painfully administering to the world of convenience stores, diners, one-night stads..daring to pick at the raw skin of being and to call it beauty...From the starkness of glaciers to the empty refrigerator, these poems rise from the most barren landscapes and manage to make of them fabled islands, joyful joyful things"--D.A. Download or read book PP FF written by Peter H. Conners and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Fiction. A first-of-its-kind collection of hybrid prose-poetry and flash-fiction featuring 61 of today's foremost innovative writers, including Kim Addonizio, Stuart Dybek, Lydia Davis, Sean Thomas Dougherty, Brian Evenson, Raymond Federman, Geoffrey Gatza, Laird Hunt, Harold Jaffe, Kent Johnson, Gary Lutz, Cris Mazza, Joyelle McSweeney, Christina Milletti, Ander Monson, Daniel Nester, Ethan Paquin, Aimee Parkison, Elizabeth Robinson, Martha Ronk, Nina Shope, Eleni Sikelianos, Jessica Treat, Diane Williams, and many more. "Perhaps the writers in this anthology will be thoughtof as PP/FF writers. Perhaps poets, fiction writers, or followers of Orpheus. I would argue that strict adherence to given conventions of form and genre are delibilitating to a writer's creativity and do a disservice to readers. Genre is easier to teach, to quantify and review, but what does it have to do with creating new art?"--Peter Conners, from the introduction.
