Download or read book Mission Science written by Carine Dujardin and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science as an instrument to justify religious missions in secular society The relationship between religion and science is complex and continues to be a topical issue. However, it is seldom zoomed in on from both Protestant andCatholic perspectives. By doing so the contributing authors in this collection gain new insights into the origin and development of missiology. Missiology is described in this book as a “project of modernity,” a contemporary form of apologetics. “Scientific apologetics” was the way to justify missions in a society that was rapidly becoming secularized. Mission & Sciencedeals with the interaction between new scientific disciplines (historiography, geography, ethnology, anthropology, linguistics) and new scientific insights (Darwin’s evolutionary theory, heliocentrism), as well as the role of the papacy and what inspired missionary practice (first in China and the Far East and later in Africa). The renewed missiology has in turn influenced the missionary practice of the twentieth century, guided by apostolic policy. Some “missionary scholars” have even had a significant influence on the scientific discourse of their time.

Book Missionary Spaces

Download or read book Missionary Spaces written by Thomas Coomans and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ‘spatial turn’ of missionary places Situated at the crossroads of missionary history, imperial history and colonial architecture, this volume examines the architectural staging and spatial implications of the worldwide expansion of Christianity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By focusing on specific architectural fragments, analysing the intersection of Christian edifices in colonial and traditional urban settings or unravelling the social understanding of missionary places, each chapter strives to understand the agency of missionary spaces. Bringing together scholars from different disciplines and fields, this book aims to centre those missionary spaces by approaching them not merely as décor around and within which the missionary encounter was acted, but by making them part and parcel of it. Through its approach, Missionary Spaces provides a new paradigm for scrutinising the ‘spatial turn’ for missionary histories and contributes to the increased attention across the humanities to space, place, and location since the late 1990s. Space does not occur as an historical given, but as a social construction to be analysed, while at the same time having explanatory value of its own. This book focuses on Africa and the Chinese Region with contributions on Burundi, China, Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, and Taiwan.

Download or read book C I C M Missionaries Past and Present 1862 1987 written by D. Verhelst and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C.I.C.M. Missionaries, Past and Present begins with the story of the Belgian Mission for China, founded by the diocesan priest Theophile Verbist in 1862. He runs the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (C.I.C.M.) until his death at Lao-hu-kou in 1868, the smallest and poorest mission station of the Provicariate of Mongolia. Being sensitive to the signs of the times and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Congregation keeps accepting new missions and develops into an international congregation of religious missionaries who, although belonging to different cultures and races, live and work together as brothers. One heart and one soul, these international C.I.C.M. communities witness to the universal brotherhood of all men in Christ.

Book The Habit

  • Author : Elizabeth Kuhns
  • Publisher : Image
  • Release : 2007-12-18
  • ISBN : 0307423956
  • Pages : 253 pages

Download or read book The Habit written by Elizabeth Kuhns and published by Image. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curiosity about nuns and their distinctive clothing is almost as old as Catholicism itself. The habit intrigues the religious and the nonreligious alike, from medieval maidens to contemporary schoolboys, to feminists and other social critics. The first book to explore the symbolism of this attire, The Habit presents a visual gallery of the diverse forms of religious clothing and explains the principles and traditions that inspired them. More than just an eye-opening study of the symbolic significance of starched wimples, dark dresses, and flowing veils, The Habit is an incisive, engaging portrait of the roles nuns have and do play in the Catholic Church and in ministering to the needs of society. From the clothing seen in an eleventh-century monastery to the garb worn by nuns on picket lines during the 1960s, habits have always been designed to convey a specific image or ideal. The habits of the Benedictines and the Dominicans, for example, were specifically created to distinguish women who consecrated their lives to God; other habits reflected the sisters’ desire to blend in among the people they served. The brown Carmelite habit was rarely seen outside the monastery wall, while the Flying Nun turned the white winged cornette of the Daughters of Charity into a universally recognized icon. And when many religious abandoned habits in the 1960s and ’70s, it stirred a debate that continues today. Drawing on archival research and personal interviews with nuns all over the United States, Elizabeth Kuhns examines some of the gender and identity issues behind the controversy and brings to light the paradoxes the habit represents. For some, it epitomizes oppression and obsolescence; for others, it embodies the ultimate beauty and dignity of the vocation. Complete with extraordinary photographs, including images of the nineteenth century nuns’ silk bonnets to the simple gray dresses of the Sisters of Social Service, this evocative narrative explores the timeless symbolism of the habit and traces its evolution as a visual reflection of the changes in society.

  • Author : Sisters, Servants of The Immaculate Heart of Mary
  • Publisher : Syracuse University Press
  • Release : 1997-06-01
  • ISBN : 9780815627371
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book Building Sisterhood written by Sisters, Servants of The Immaculate Heart of Mary and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1997-06-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The often forgotten role of Catholic sisters is told in experiences deeply rooted in self-realization and feminist methodology. In this collection of thirteen essays the contributors illuminate the little known world of a very creative and committed community of women—their aspirations, their values, their mission. An often neglected part of feminist research, this type of sisterly collaboration affirms the seminal paradigms in women's work and writing. These essays deal with many of the same issues of power, economic autonomy, friendship, spirituality, socialization, and professional commitment encountered in other feminist endeavors. Building Sisterhood gives the reader insight into the rigorous training involved in becoming a nun, including the complex relationships between the Monroe community, other IHM sites, and within the intricate church hierarchy. Feminist historian Margaret Susan Thompson places the essays within a historical context and provides detailed background for those unfamiliar with the life, duty, and experience of Catholic sisters. This book will make a unique contribution to feminist scholarship, religious studies, and women's history

Book Christianity and the African Imagination

Download or read book Christianity and the African Imagination written by David Maxwell and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-08-08 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth-century, Christendom shifted its centre of gravity to the Southern Hemisphere, Africa becoming the most significant area of church growth. This volume explores Christianity’s advance across the continent, and its capturing of the African imagination. From the medieval Catholic Kingdom of Kongo to a transnational Pentecostal movement in post-colonial Zimbabwe, the chapters explore how African agents – priests and prophets, martyrs and missionaries, evangelists and catechists – have seized Christianity and made it theirs. Emphasizing popular religion, the book shows how the Christian ideas and texts, practices and symbols, which have been adapted by Africans, help them accept existential passions and empower them through faith to deal with material concerns for health and wealth, and to overcome evil.
