Download or read book The Pattern On The Stone written by W. Daniel Hillis and published by Basic Books (AZ). This book was released on 1999-10-08 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people are baffled by how computers work and assume that they will never understand them. What they don't realize--and what Daniel Hillis's short book brilliantly demonstrates--is that computers' seemingly complex operations can be broken down into a few simple parts that perform the same simple procedures over and over. Written clearly and succinctly by one of the world's leading computer scientists, The Pattern on the Stone is an indispensable guide to understanding the workings of that most ubiquitous and important of machines. Download or read book Human Consciousness of God in the Book of Job written by Jeffrey Boss and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05-13 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Consciousness of God is the first commentary on the book of Job to trace Job's relationship with God in a work of universal sprituality. The most important - and unique - element in Jeffrey Boss' approach is his examination of Job from a psychological perspective. However the work also takes into account the history of interpretation of the book, giving due attention to questions surrounding the text's coherence, authorship and provenance. It is, at the same time, a valuable new commentary on the Hebrew Masoretic Text of Job. The book opens with an introduction enabling those unfamiliar with the book of Job, or with recent scholarship to appreciate it and engage with it. Then follows the full commentary which draws attention to the development of Job's character and his relationship with God. Finally the author presents his conclusions following the work together with a detailed bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a beginner's guide to applied econometrics using the free statistics software R. It provides and explains R solutions to most of the examples in 'Principles of Econometrics' by Hill, Griffiths, and Lim, fourth edition. 'Using R for Principles of Econometrics' requires no previous knowledge in econometrics or R programming, but elementary notions of statistics are helpful.
Download or read book Introduction to Time Series and Forecasting written by Peter J. Brockwell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the key mathematical results are stated without proof in order to make the underlying theory acccessible to a wider audience. The book assumes a knowledge only of basic calculus, matrix algebra, and elementary statistics. The emphasis is on methods and the analysis of data sets. The logic and tools of model-building for stationary and non-stationary time series are developed in detail and numerous exercises, many of which make use of the included computer package, provide the reader with ample opportunity to develop skills in this area. The core of the book covers stationary processes, ARMA and ARIMA processes, multivariate time series and state-space models, with an optional chapter on spectral analysis. Additional topics include harmonic regression, the Burg and Hannan-Rissanen algorithms, unit roots, regression with ARMA errors, structural models, the EM algorithm, generalized state-space models with applications to time series of count data, exponential smoothing, the Holt-Winters and ARAR forecasting algorithms, transfer function models and intervention analysis. Brief introducitons are also given to cointegration and to non-linear, continuous-time and long-memory models. The time series package included in the back of the book is a slightly modified version of the package ITSM, published separately as ITSM for Windows, by Springer-Verlag, 1994. It does not handle such large data sets as ITSM for Windows, but like the latter, runs on IBM-PC compatible computers under either DOS or Windows (version 3.1 or later). The programs are all menu-driven so that the reader can immediately apply the techniques in the book to time series data, with a minimal investment of time in the computational and algorithmic aspects of the analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Original papers by leading international authors address the most important problem in the philosophy of language, the question of how to assess the prospects of developing a tenable theory of meaning, given the influential sceptical attacks mounted against the concept of meaning by Willard Van Quine and Saul Kripke and their adherents in particular. Thus the texts attempt to answer the fundamental questions – of whether there are meanings, and, if there are, of what they are and of the form a serious philosophical theory of meaning should take.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a marvelous compendium of eight articles that cover a wide range of topics, including breast cancer: management and survivorship, rectal cancer intersphincteric resection, head and neck cancer diagnosis and radiotherapy, synthetic peptides as antitumor agents, and recent advances in thyroid cancer. It has been a wonderful opportunity to co-edit this special edition. We are greatly appreciative of the work of all the contributors to the book, who brought with them tremendous diversity of perspectives and fields truly reflective of the complexity of the topic and who, through coming together in this project, serve as a nidus of the multidisciplinary collaboration in this field. Finally, we must acknowledge the thousands of cancer patients who have participated in the studies that have provided the information that has advanced the field so greatly in recent years.
Download or read book Autonomy in Jewish Philosophy written by Kenneth Seeskin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-09-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autonomy in Jewish Philosophy examines an important theme in Jewish thought from the Book of Genesis to the present day. Although it is customary to view Judaism as a legalistic faith leaving little room for free thought or individual expression, Kenneth Seeskin argues that this view is wrong. Where some see the essence of the religion as strict obedience to divine commands, Seeskin claims that God does not just command but forms a partnership with humans requiring the consent of both parties. Looking at classic texts from Biblical, Rabbinic, and philosophical literature, Seeskin shows that Judaism has always respected freedom of conscience and assigned an important role to the power of human reason. The book considers both existing arguments and presents its own ideas about the role of autonomy in Judaism. Clear and concise, it offers a refreshing alternative to the mysticism and dogmatism prevalent in much of the literature.

Download or read book New Developments in Dam Engineering written by Martin Wieland and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 1248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of water resources is a key element in the socio-economic development of many regions in the world. Water availability and rainfall are unequally distributed both in space and time, so dams play a vital role, there being few viable alternatives for storing water. Dams hold a prime place in satisfying the ever-increasing demand for power, irrigation and drinking water, for protection of man, property and environment from catastrophic floods, and for regulating the flow of rivers. Dams have contributed to the development of civilization for over 2,000 years. Worldwide there are some 45,000 large dams listed by ICOLD, which have a height over 15 meters. Today, in western countries, where most of the water resources have been developed, the safety of the existing dams and measures for extending their economical life are of prime concern. In developing countries the focus is on the construction of new dams. The proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Dam Engineering includes contributions from 18 countries, and provides an overview of the state-of-the-art in hydropower development, new type dams, new materials and new technologies, dam and environment. Traditional areas, such as concrete dams and embankment dams, methods of analysis and design of dams, dam foundation, seismic analysis, design and safety, stability of dam and slope, dam safety monitoring and instrumentation, dam maintenance, and rehabilitation and heightening are also considered. The book is of special interest to scientists, researchers, engineers, and students working in dam engineering, dam design, hydropower development, environmental engineering, and structural hydraulics.
