Book excerpt: Although far from the front lines of war, the people of Idaho contributed to the US effort in World War II in myriad ways. Entrepreneurs perfected the dehydration of potatoes and onions that became staples of the rations that sustained Allied troops stationed around the globe. Idahoans mined rare metals and manufactured them into weapons and munitions that allowed US forces to compete with the technologies of their opponents. Local communities organized USO huts that provided coffee, cookies, and warm smiles to homesick troops in transit to and from the war. However, World War II also left an indelible mark on the state of Idaho. On the one hand, the federal government's ambitious construction of airports, buildings, and roads to support the war effort transformed a rural state that had lacked infrastructure. On the other hand, Idaho soil housed detention camps where American citizens were denied fundamental rights. And loss and heartbreak impacted nearly every community.

Book excerpt: Perfumed breezes from the whispering tamaracks hide secrets and carry only unanswered questions throughout the wide valley that was once filled with Cryus Wynter’s greatest hopes, dreams, and ambitions but now only with questions. How could such a skilled breeder, known to be prudent and cautious around the breed he loved, have been gored by his own prize bull? And what of the once prominent family heritage now apparently shaken and in such discord that the favored son has left? It is in the midst of this perplexity that Lydee finds herself in an arranged marriage to the younger son and fearfully struggles to deal with the dismay of dark family secrets until finally she is driven to the far plains over Idaho’s wild Snake River for answers—and there’s a final vindication even for the noble bulls!

In a story written in exquisite prose and told from multiple perspectives—including Ann, Wade, and Jenny, now in prison—we gradually learn of the mysterious and shocking act that fractured Wade and Jenny's lives, of the love and compassion that brought Ann and Wade together, and of the memories that reverberate through the lives of every character in Idaho. In a wild emotional and physical landscape, Wade’s past becomes the center of Ann’s imagination, as Ann becomes determined to understand the family she never knew—and to take responsibility for them, reassembling their lives, and her own. [A] wrenching and beautiful book.”—The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice) “Sensuous, exquisitely crafted.”—The Wall Street Journal “The first thing you should know about Idaho, the shatteringly original debut by O. Henry Prize winner Emily Ruskovich, is that it upturns everything you think you know about story. . . . [an] eerie story about what the heart is capable of fathoming and what the hand is capable of executing.”—Marie Claire “Idaho is a wonderful debut. Ruskovich knows how to build a page-turner from the opening paragraph.”—Ft. Worth Star-Telegram

Book excerpt: After many years on the range, a cool fighter who calls himself Idaho rides back to the country where he was raised. Unrecognized by the friends and foes of his childhood, Idaho finds himself in the midst of a roaring scrap between two proud ranchmen and he finds his loyalty split on both sides of the feud. A quick shooter but a quicker thinker, a leader and fighter who never reckons his own safety, Idaho aims to restore justice and peace to the warring ranches. His resolve to win the respect of a father who abandoned him, his desire to protect his greatest benefactor, and his yearning to secure the love of his childhood friend Nancy, force him in the center of the conflict, even as he wrestles with his own inner turmoil. Even as Idaho struggles to determine where to stand in the conflict, he stands up against crookedness and foul play from all sides! His shrewd plans for recapturing fence wire and a stolen stream, his hair-trigger action to save lives in tough spots, his fairness and human sympathy—it is his courage and calm in hot situations that prove him a hero fit to make the cattle country proud. In the midst of battle blazing with six-guns, rifles, dynamite, fire, and the whole arsenal of hatred and violence, Idaho’s divided allegiance may be the only thing that can save the clashing ranchers from each other—and from themselves.
