Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aramaic Origin of the Fourth Gospel IN a sermon preached in June 1920 before the University of Oxford* the present writer made a plea for a closer synthesis of Old Testament learning with the study of the New Testament; and reviewing summarily and generally the kind of New Testa ment problems which might receive fuller elucidation through the more direct application to them of Semitic learning, he put forward the possibility that in the future a Semitic scholar might arise who, examining the language of the Fourth Gospel in detail, would prove beyond the range of reasonable doubt that it was based upon an Aramaic original. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Four Gospels: A New Translation Jesus and his disciples spoke and wrote Aramaic. His reported words and discourses, and the earliest accounts of his deeds, were written down and circulated in that language, as no one doubts. Documents of this sort were numerous (Luke 1:1), and they attest literary skill of a high order; thus notably the rather extensive source, "Q," used by Matthew and Luke. In what way these primitive records were related to our Four Gospels, is a question which hitherto has not received any satisfactory answer. It is purposed here to show that the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John were composed in Aramaic on the basis of popular documents widespread in Palestine, and that they were by others translated into Greek without intended change. Also, that Luke employed only Semitic sources, assembling them into an especially complete Gospel, which he himself translated. The evidence of translation, in each and all of the Four Gospels, is perfectly clear and very complete. The attempt is here made to give an English rendering which takes constant account of the original Semitic text, everywhere closely reproduced in the Greek. The tree is not morally bad, but rather unripe: this is not the right time and place for it to bear. The saying gives an example from nature. Rather than imposing an external standard of goodness, the lesson has to do with time and place, setting and circumstance, health and disease. Book Jesus Before the Gospels

Download or read book Jesus Before the Gospels written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author of Misquoting Jesus, one of the most renowned and controversial Bible scholars in the world today examines oral tradition and its role in shaping the stories about Jesus we encounter in the New Testament—and ultimately in our understanding of Christianity. Throughout much of human history, our most important stories were passed down orally—including the stories about Jesus before they became written down in the Gospels. In this fascinating and deeply researched work, leading Bible scholar Bart D. Ehrman investigates the role oral history has played in the New Testament—how the telling of these stories not only spread Jesus’ message but helped shape it. A master explainer of Christian history, texts, and traditions, Ehrman draws on a range of disciplines, including psychology and anthropology, to examine the role of memory in the creation of the Gospels. Explaining how oral tradition evolves based on the latest scientific research, he demonstrates how the act of telling and retelling impacts the story, the storyteller, and the listener—crucial insights that challenge our typical historical understanding of the silent period between when Jesus lived and died and when his stories began to be written down. As he did in his previous books on religious scholarship, debates on New Testament authorship, and the existence of Jesus of Nazareth, Ehrman combines his deep knowledge and meticulous scholarship in a compelling and eye-opening narrative that will change the way we read and think about these sacred texts.

Book An Aramaic Approach to Q

  • Author : Maurice Casey
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2002-09-26
  • ISBN : 113943828X
  • Pages : 222 pages

Download or read book An Aramaic Approach to Q written by Maurice Casey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-09-26 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to examine the Aramaic dimension of Q since the Aramaic Dead Sea scrolls made such work more feasible. Maurice Casey gives a detailed examination of key passages in Matthew and Luke's gospels, demonstrating that they used two different Greek translations of an Aramaic source, which can be reconstructed. He overturns the conventional model of Q as a single Greek document, and shows that Jesus said everything in the original Aramaic source. Further analysis of other gospel passages shows the evangelists editing a Greek translation of an Aramaic source. On one, it can be shown that Mark utilises a different Aramaic source. A complex model of Q is thus proposed. Casey argues that Aramaic sources behind part of Q are of extremely early date, and should contribute significantly to the quest for the historical Jesus.
