Book On the Approximate Minimization of Functionals

Download or read book On the Approximate Minimization of Functionals written by James W. Daniel and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper considers in general the problem of finding the minimum of a given functional f(u) over a set B by approximately minimizing a sequence of functionals f sub n(u sub n) over a 'discretized' set B sub n; theorems are given proving the convergence of the approximating points u sub n in B sub n to the desired point u in B. Applications are given to the Rayleigh-Ritz method, regularization, Chebyshev solution of differential equations, and the calculus of variations. (Author).

Book Theoretical Numerical Analysis

Download or read book Theoretical Numerical Analysis written by Peter Linz and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2019-06-12 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise text introduces numerical analysis as a practical, problem-solving discipline. The three-part presentation begins with the fundamentals of functional analysis and approximation theory. Part II outlines the major results of theoretical numerical analysis, reviewing product integration, approximate expansion methods, the minimization of functions, and related topics. Part III considers specific subjects that illustrate the power and usefulness of theoretical analysis. Ideal as a text for a one-year graduate course, the book also offers engineers and scientists experienced in numerical computing a simple introduction to the major ideas of modern numerical analysis. Some practical experience with computational mathematics and the ability to relate this experience to new concepts is assumed. Otherwise, no background beyond advanced calculus is presupposed. Moreover, the ideas of functional analysis used throughout the text are introduced and developed only to the extent they are needed.

Book Nonsmooth Analysis and Geometric Methods in Deterministic Optimal Control

Download or read book Nonsmooth Analysis and Geometric Methods in Deterministic Optimal Control written by Boris S. Mordukhovich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications NONSMOOTH ANALYSIS AND GEOMETRIC METHODS IN DETERMINISTIC OPTIMAL CONTROL is based on the proceedings of a workshop that was an integral part of the 1992-93 IMA program on "Control Theory. " The purpose of this workshop was to concentrate on powerful mathematical techniques that have been de veloped in deterministic optimal control theory after the basic foundations of the theory (existence theorems, maximum principle, dynamic program ming, sufficiency theorems for sufficiently smooth fields of extremals) were laid out in the 1960s. These advanced techniques make it possible to derive much more detailed information about the structure of solutions than could be obtained in the past, and they support new algorithmic approaches to the calculation of such solutions. We thank Boris S. Mordukhovich and Hector J. Sussmann for organiz ing the workshop and editing the proceedings. We also take this oppor tunity to thank the National Science Foundation and the Army Research Office, whose financial support made the workshop possible. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. v PREFACE This volume contains the proceedings of the workshop on Nonsmooth Analysis and Geometric Methods in Deterministic Optimal Control held at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications on February 8-17, 1993 during a special year devoted to Control Theory and its Applications. The workshop-whose organizing committee consisted of V. J urdjevic, B. S. Mordukhovich, R. T. Rockafellar, and H. J.

Book Well Posed Optimization Problems

Download or read book Well Posed Optimization Problems written by Assen L. Dontchev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents in a unified way the mathematical theory of well-posedness in optimization. The basic concepts of well-posedness and the links among them are studied, in particular Hadamard and Tykhonov well-posedness. Abstract optimization problems as well as applications to optimal control, calculus of variations and mathematical programming are considered. Both the pure and applied side of these topics are presented. The main subject is often introduced by heuristics, particular cases and examples. Complete proofs are provided. The expected knowledge of the reader does not extend beyond textbook (real and functional) analysis, some topology and differential equations and basic optimization. References are provided for more advanced topics. The book is addressed to mathematicians interested in optimization and related topics, and also to engineers, control theorists, economists and applied scientists who can find here a mathematical justification of practical procedures they encounter.

Book Elements of the General Theory of Optimal Algorithms

Download or read book Elements of the General Theory of Optimal Algorithms written by Ivan V. Sergienko and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, the authors develop a methodology that allows one to construct and substantiate optimal and suboptimal algorithms to solve problems in computational and applied mathematics. Throughout the book, the authors explore well-known and proposed algorithms with a view toward analyzing their quality and the range of their efficiency. The concept of the approach taken is based on several theories (of computations, of optimal algorithms, of interpolation, interlination, and interflatation of functions, to name several). Theoretical principles and practical aspects of testing the quality of algorithms and applied software, are a major component of the exposition. The computer technology in construction of T-efficient algorithms for computing ε-solutions to problems of computational and applied mathematics, is also explored. The readership for this monograph is aimed at scientists, postgraduate students, advanced students, and specialists dealing with issues of developing algorithmic and software support for the solution of problems of computational and applied mathematics.

The series has also been of value to young researchers wishing both to extend their knowledge and experience and also to meet internationally renowned experts. The 2005 Conference, the seventh in the ICANNGA series, will take place at the University of Coimbra in Portugal, drawing on the experience of previous events, and following the same general model, combining technical sessions, including plenary lectures by renowned scientists, with tutorials.

Book Many Electron Approaches in Physics Chemistry and Mathematics

Download or read book Many Electron Approaches in Physics Chemistry and Mathematics written by Volker Bach and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a broad description of the development and (computational) application of many-electron approaches from a multidisciplinary perspective. In the context of studying many-electron systems Computer Science, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics are all intimately interconnected. However, beyond a handful of communities working at the interface between these disciplines, there is still a marked separation of subjects. This book seeks to offer a common platform for possible exchanges between the various fields and to introduce the reader to perspectives for potential further developments across the disciplines. The rapid advances of modern technology will inevitably require substantial improvements in the approaches currently used, which will in turn make exchanges between disciplines indispensable. In essence this book is one of the very first attempts at an interdisciplinary approach to the many-electron problem.

Download or read book Approximating Perfection written by Leonid P. Lebedev and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book for those who enjoy thinking about how and why Nature can be described using mathematical tools. Approximating Perfection considers the background behind mechanics as well as the mathematical ideas that play key roles in mechanical applications. Concentrating on the models of applied mechanics, the book engages the reader in the types of nuts-and-bolts considerations that are normally avoided in formal engineering courses: how and why models remain imperfect, and the factors that motivated their development. The opening chapter reviews and reconsiders the basics of calculus from a fully applied point of view; subsequent chapters explore selected topics from solid mechanics, hydrodynamics, and the natural sciences. Emphasis is placed on the logic that underlies modeling in mechanics and the many surprising parallels that exist between seemingly diverse areas. The mathematical demands on the reader are kept to a minimum, so the book will appeal to a wide technical audience.
