Book excerpt: In 1983, Howard Gardner proposed the Multiple Intelligences Theory to explain intelligence as the ability to perform skills and solve problems valued by the society. Although the theory was not designed to become a teaching strategy, education professionals readily accepted MI both nationally and globally. In accordance with much of the research conducted regarding MI Theory since its inception in 1983, this study was conducted to determine if the application of the Multiple Intelligences (MI) Theory as an alternative form of assessment in a social studies curriculum for students with disabilities will decrease behavioral problems related to potential failure, anxiety and frustration while promoting academic excellence and scholastic creativity? Upon reviewing the literature, MI was appealing to instructors for a variety of reasons such as validating existing teacher experiences, the multicultural dynamic of the 21st century classroom and effectiveness of MI for students with disabilities. Furthermore, following the completion of several academic studies of MI and the classroom, the literature found that MI promotes intellectual strengths of the student, encourages student self-reflection and meta-cognition, serves as an alternative form of assessment, produces motivated learners and a sense of mutual respect and collaboration. The researcher expected to obtain similar results when MI was applied to a out of district special day school in Marlboro, NJ. Collier High School serves between 150-200 special needs and at risk youth at the secondary level. Fifteen students were selected from four separate sections of a United States History II as mandated by the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards. The study consisted of two phases encompassing six social studies units. At the completion of each unit, participants were required to complete an end of unit activity. The first three activities restricted student choice and freedom of expression while the second round of end of unit activities contained eight separate activity choices, each aligned to one particular multiple intelligence. Throughout the course of both phases, the researcher collected data using observations, anecdotal records, completion and assessment records and questionnaires. Following the completion of the study and the analysis of the data, the researcher concluded that MI and student choice did decrease behavioral problems related to potential failure, anxiety and frustration while promoting academic excellence and scholastic creativity. Student time on task became more productive while students intuitively collaborated. End of unit activity scores increased for the majority of participants. Finally, the synthesis of questionnaire data revealed that students are more comfortable and motivated when provided to choose a method of expression or demonstrate material comprehension utilizing their dominant intelligence strength. Although a disparity emerged between the perceived dominant intelligence, the participants' activity selection during Phase II, and assessment, potential advantages and disadvantages to the implementation of MI for secondary level students with disabilities were identified while potential solutions were recommended.
