Download or read book Greek Transport Amphorae written by I. K. Whitbread and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For five and a half centuries amphorae were used by the ancient Greeks to transport olive oil, wine and other liquid and semi-liquid products. The analysis of this distinctive pot form now provides our main source of information on the lost organic staples of the classical economy. Undiagnostic fragmentary amphorae remains are often the most common ceramic find during excavations in the Mediterranean, and until now a methodology has been lacking for their effective study. Traditionally chronological and regional types have been established by stylistic analysis and the incomplete evidence of administrative stamps. In this book Whitbread surveys this methodology but compares it with the results of his own extensive work on the ceramic petrology of Greek amphorae. His pioneering approach not only reveals new information about Greek trade but also sheds fascinating light on the production of these commonly found vessels.
Download or read book Excavations by K M Kenyon in Jerusalem 1961 1967 written by K. Prag and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2008-08-06 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth volume in the series of final reports on the work of the Joint Expedition to Jerusalem in the 1960s describes the discoveries made in six sites in the ancient city and places them in the archaeological and historical context of Jerusalem and the surrounding lands. Among the most debated issues are the extent of the occupation of the city during the Iron Age, the location of the southern defence line in Herodian and Roman times, and the date of the destruction of an Umayyad palatial structure. There is fresh information on the civic amenities of the southern half of the Byzantine city, and on the structure of the Ottoman city defences built under Sulaiman the Magnificent in the sixteenth century. Fine glazed pottery, both locally made and imported, and the wide range of materials reaching Jerusalem through trade and pilgrimage, reflect elite patronage and the high status of the holy city under Islamic rule.
Download or read book The Historical Greek Village written by Brice L. Erickson and published by American School of Classical Studies at Athens. This book was released on 2018-10-22 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the Protogeometric through Hellenistic material (ca. 970-175 B.C.) from ASCSA excavations conducted in the 1950s at Lerna in the Argolid, one of the most important prehistoric sites in Greece. The material derives from two main sources: burials from a Geometric cemetery near the settlement and Late Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic wells from the mound proper. Although the material consists primarily of pottery and other ceramic finds, it also includes human remains, animal bones and shells, coins, inscriptions, and bronze and stone objects. Heather Graybehl provides a petrographic analysis, Mark L. Lawall discusses the transport amphoras and import patterns, David S. Reese presents the faunal material, and David Scahill presents and catalogues two Doric capitals. This study not only gives scholars greater insight into ceramic developments in the Argolid, it brings much-needed focus to the material culture of a historic settlement not known for strategic trading, politics, or military prowess. Lerna VIII will greatly facilitate comparative studies with other modestly sized communities in ancient Greece.
Download or read book The Origins and Ancient History of Wine written by Patrick E. McGovern and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents contemporary evidence scientific, archaeological, botanical, textual, and historical for major revisions in our understanding of winemaking in antiquity. Among the subjects covered are the domestication of the Vinifera grape, the wine trade, the iconography of ancient wine, and the analytical and archaeological challenges posed by ancient wines. The essayists argue that wine existed as long ago as 3500 BC, almost half a millennium earlier than experts believed. Discover named these findings among the most important in 1991. Featuring the work of 23 internationally known scholars and writers, the book offers the first wide ranging treatment of wine in the early history of western Asia and the Mediterranean. Comprehensive and accessible while providing full documentation, it is sure to serve as a catalyst for future research.
Download or read book Archaeometry written by Yannis Maniatis and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1989 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeometry is a growing branch of science, which aims to develop scientific techniques and methodology in order to obtain accurate and objective information from available archaeological material. This information, combined with the results of archaeological research, leads to a better knowledge of ancient cultural societies and their evolution. This book provides a unique opportunity for readers wishing to be kept abreast of current research and future trends in archeometry, by summarizing the most recent advances in the field. It consists of a number of papers presented at the 25th International Symposium on Archaeometry, held at the National Research Centre for Physical Sciences Demokritos'' in Athens, 19-23 May 1986. The papers cover a very wide range of archaeological materials and scientific techniques currently used in archaeometry, and present novel applications on specific archaeological problems. Topics include dating, provenance, technology of ceramics and metals, and prospection. A number of pure archaeological papers are also included, dealing with aspects of the transition from the Late Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age in the Aegean.
