Book excerpt: This paper describes the area in northern Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, including upland parts of Victoria County and parts of Inverness County north of the Grande Anse River. The report gives the regional setting, then describes the Blair River complex, Aspey Terrace and Bras d'Or Terrane. The structural geology and metamorphism of the area is described, along with the economic geology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes and explains the unconsolidated surface materials and landforms of Cape Breton Island, tracing the history of geological processes that shaped the area during the late Cenozoic time and emphasizing the previous interglacial period and the last glacial period. Initial field work was conducted in the summers of 1970 and 1971. Documentation of the surficial geological map units was by ground observation. Most of the coast was studied on foot, with the remainder by boat. Additional incidental observations, local stratigraphic studies, and traverse of new highland forestry access roads were made on an opportunity basis in 1974, 1976, 1982, 1993, and 1994.

Download or read book Stratigraphy Tectonic Setting and Geological History of Late Precambrian Volcanic sedimentary plutonic Belts in Southeastern Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia written by Sandra M. Barr and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bulletin is the result of a systematic remapping of the Late Precambrian volcanic, sedimentary, and plutonic rocks of south-eastern Cape Breton Island, last mapped in the 1940s. The investigative work included precise uranium-lead dating from key units throughout the study area, showing the differences in ages in the volcanic and sedimentary rocks previously lumped together as a single unit. These rocks have been divided into three groups based on ages, and each group has been subdivided into lithofacies units. Petrological/geochemical data are used in combination with field observations to interpret the tectonic setting and geological evolution of the study area. Major units described in the bulletin include the Stirling belt, the East Bay Hills belt, the Coxheath Hills belt, the Sporting Mountain belt, the coastal belt, and Upper Precambrian to Lower Palaeozoic units.
Download or read book Structural Denudation of Silurian Devonian High grade Metamorphic Rocks and Postorogenic Detachment Faulting in the Maritimes Basin Northern Nova Scotia written by Gregory Lynch and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report attempts to classify, correlate, and characterize some of the regional-scale fault structures which, in part, accommodated the orogenic cycle that occurred from Silurian to Carboniferous time in northern Nova Scotia. After an introduction on the geological setting of Cape Breton Island, the report describes early tectonic thrusting in the Highlands shear zone & Cabot nappe, the Margaree shear zone & Late Devonian extension, and the Ainslie detachment & Carboniferous salt tectonics. Implications for the understanding of some lead-zinc mineralization are also discussed.
