Book Yamie Chess The Adventures of Tigermore and the Mind Angels

This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational Assessments "Research has shown that, by itself, learning to play chess is tied to better logical reasoning and stronger performance in math. Yamie Chess adds to this by integrating both mathematical content and math puzzles into the text."—Professor Michael Ching, PhD, Mathematics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology "Next to the chessic aspects, the mathematical topics are at the center of the book: Here the readers are exposed to sets and Venn diagrams, numbers and raising them to powers, fractions and triangles including the theorem of Pythagoras."—Professor Christian Hesse, PhD, Mathematics, Harvard University "Mathematics problems are interspersed through the text and will both expose children to important mathematical results (e.g., Venn diagrams, finding the area of a triangle, and unit cancellation) and allow them opportunity to grow in mathematical reasoning. Problems are labeled by grade level, allowing parents and teachers to target problems for students."—Professor Ashley Ahlin, PhD, Mathematics, University of Chicago Math Contents Summary First published in softcover for Yamie Chess' nationally award-winning math learning aid that won School Library Journal's Best Education Pick of 2014, and now available for the first time in eBook format, Yamie Chess: The Adventures of Tigermore and the Mind Angels is a supplemental math education aid written by experienced teachers that requires no prior experience of chess. Designed as a children's graphic novel for math education, the work is aligned with the NCTM Curriculum Focal Points in algebra, geometry, numbers and operations, measurement and data analysis. Teaching children from 5 to 12 years old important math and science classroom skills for STEM education, the comic can be read as a standalone adventure story for supplemental math study, at home and at school, or used by beginners to learn chess from scratch. The book's instructions encourage kids to use the material with any classic chess set they have available, to aid their understanding of chess, and reenact the integrated European chess game that unfolds through the story. It's a historic game in fact, that took place between Grandmasters Johannes Zukertort and GM Adolf Anderssen in Berlin, Germany in 1865. With artwork from ex-Disney illustrators, the story follows 8-year-old Kimi as he travels to the Mind Kingdom, a secret universe ruled by chess where all the cartoon characters are the classic chess pieces from the boardgame, to learn math skills for school. Information for Parents and Teachers The math comic features important educational benefits for children: 1. Written by veteran math teachers: Yamie Chess: The Adventures of Tigermore and the Mind Angels was developed by experienced U.S. math teachers from America's top universities including: Caltech, Columbia, Stanford, Vanderbilt and MIT - the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; 2. Math practice for 5 - 12 year olds: Useful for practicing math with the kids at home on tablets and smartphones, the softcover version is already being used in after-school classes and indoor recess. Yamie Chess offers supportive and carefully designed math learning material and puzzles to help budding learners to boost their math skills for school. "The problems are clearly marked by grade level and were written to tie into the NCTM standards. Solutions are provided in the back with ample explanation and diagrams to show how some of the more complex problems are solved. These questions give a depth to the story and provide differentiation for any age student in grades K-8."—Mrs Jena Philips, MEd, 8th Grade Science Teacher, Northern Arizona University "As a middle school math teacher I see the value of Yamie Chess in an educational setting. This is a wonderful enrichment activity that can be used to spark more students’ interest in learning the game of chess while increasing mathematical thinking."—Elizabeth Gates, BA, Illinois 7th Grade Math Teacher, Miami University 3. Learn classic chess from scratch: No prior experience is needed to play Yamie Chess, the book teaches children the basics of the game including how the pieces move, basic chess strategy and then with the comic story enables children to work through a historical European chess game with the cartoon characters, giving kids' an immediate understanding and context to their newly learned knowledge. 4. Grade key for learners: With a friendly cartoon background story that can be universally enjoyed by elementary and middle school children, the math puzzles and problems woven through the text and illustrations are keyed at each step with their corresponding U.S. grade school level to help parents and teachers isolate material to challenge and explore work in line with homestudy and school courses. For example, the note "Grade 3" next to a math concept in the text would indicate that the level of the problem is great for introducing that particular math concept to 3rd graders, that 4th to 8th graders should be able to understand and complete that problem as revision work, and that 1st and 2nd graders could either attempt to approach the problem or skip it and return in the future when they feel more ready. There is a wide variety of math problems aimed at each age group. 5. Hints and explained answers: To make the eBook more interactive, a button link to the answer is provided next to each math problem in the text, with hints to trigger lateral thinking and full explanations for the more challenging problems included in the eBook's linked appendix. 6. 250+ imaginative cartoons: To help comprehension and understanding of the math concepts, the work features a great many imaginative and beautifully shaded illustrations designed by top ex-Disney animators.

Book Devils and Angels

Download or read book Devils and Angels written by Philip G. Cohen and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Literary theory and textual criticism have much to teach each other," writes Philip Cohen, who has collected this anthology of essays that seeks to bridge what he sees as a wide rift between textual and literary critics. While most Anglo-American textual scholars now stress the importance of authorial intention and its key role in editorial and interpretative work, many literary theorists still tend to ostracize the author and his intentions from any serious literary discussion. The contributors to this collection, many of whom are well known for both their practical and theoretical work in editorial fields, look to recast in different ways the assumptions and working methods of Anglo-American editorial scholarship.

Book Angels in the Silicon

Download or read book Angels in the Silicon written by Richard Therodor Kusiolek and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This creative non-fiction book for the reader is a great introduction to the effects of global capitalism on the dynamic region that is the San Francisco Bay Area. It is written by the author with deep knowledge of the business practices, which have shaped the area into what it is today. What will interest the reader most, however, are the multicultural aspects in the book, from the main protagonists background as an Eastern European, to the chasing of the American dream, afforded and provided by opportunities in the Silicon Valley. Things are not so simple. What the book does well is offer a perspective of the globalized effects that fracture the American dream in terms of both business and law practices sweeping the region (and the U.S. at large). For someone who is a new transplant to the area under question, it was truly fascinating to get this well-documented historical perspective. What is more, and this is where the true literary merit of the book comes from, is that this larger economic element is reflected in the fracturing of the American family itself, issues with which Thaddeus Sikorski, the protagonist of the novel, struggles. To this, readers get access to a perspective on the laws shaping divorce in America, the repercussions of which causes emotional turmoil for Thaddeus and his Angels. These more personal, emotional stakes are what will truly grab the reader. They provide a much-needed grounding of the broader themes explored in the novel, making them palatable and engaging to a casual reader. We are taken through the pursuit of the American dream, the establishment of the American family, and a smattering of suspense and intrigue. If you want to know more about the forces that shape modern business practices in all their dream-fulfilling and dream-shattering capacities, this is a good read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Band of Brothers, historian and former paratrooper James M. Fenelon offers a grunt’s-eye view of the 11th Airborne’s heroic campaign to liberate the Philippines in World War II. A soldier’s history at its best. A Grunt’s-Eye View of Pacific Warfare The Pacific theater of World War II pitted American fighting men against two merciless enemies: the relentless Japanese army and the combined forces of monsoons, swamps, mud, privation, and disease. General Joseph Swing’s rowdy paratroopers of the 11th Airborne Division— nicknamed the “Angels”—fought in some of the war’s most dramatic campaigns, from bloody skirmishes in Leyte’s unforgiving rainforests to the ferocious battles on Luzon, including the hellish urban combat of Manila. The Angels were trained as elite shock troops, but high American casualties often forced them into action as ground-pounding infantrymen. Surviving on airdropped supplies and reinforcements, the Angels fought their way across nearly impassable terrain, emerging as one of the most lethal units in the Pacific War. Their final task was the occupation of Japan, where they were the first American boots on the ground. Angels Against the Sun is an unforgettable account of the liberation of the Philippines. In the tradition of Band of Brothers, historian and former paratrooper James M. Fenelon offers a grunt’s-eye view of the war. This is a soldier’s history at its best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2019 Independent Press Award Winner for Historical Fiction Devoted to free Ireland from British dominance, Jeremiah Knox joined the Fenian Brotherhood in the late 1880s committed to remove the British by military insurrection. Realizing the limits of armed rebellion, he enrolled at Edinburg University to study law in the belief that political persuasion coupled with military action would be the most effective course to remove the oppressors. During a summer break in his studies he planned an ambush of a British munitions train. Snitches in the Fenian Brotherhood revealed the plot to the British exposing Jeremiah and his fellow conspirators. The majority of the Fenian prisoners were sentenced to long jail terms. A first time offender, Jeremiah's sentence was immediate deportation, exiled to the United States where a family member had sponsored him. On arriving in Boston, Jeremiah learned that his family, opposed to his politics and in concert with the court in Dublin, had him dispatched to a stone quarry in Central Massachusetts. Alone and isolated in quiet region of the country, he was far away from his political connections in Ireland as well as from the Fenians active in cities along the East Coast. There, sentenced to back–breaking labor cutting stones for graveyards, he knew he must find a new platform in life to replace his career in law. Angels on a Tombstone is a sweeping novel that traces one man's life from exile to the search for meaning and involvement in the New World. It tracks his evolution from stoic acceptance of his condition to a life full of opportunity, love and, inevitably, loss. "Readers interested in learning more about the immigrant experience through the compelling story provided in fiction will find ANGELS ON A TOMBSTONE a vivid blend of coming of age, political and social changes, and a young man's journey to a strange land and new purposes." ~CALIFORNIA BOOKWATCH, October 2018 "ANGELS ON A TOMBSTONE is a sweeping novel that traces one man's life from exile to the search for meaning and involvement in the New World.
