She soon forms a bond with the little boy in her care and settles down into what should be a simple and boring life. While Nora’s employer, Madeline Turner, is a contented housewife and mother, the same cannot be said for the rest of her family. She is plagued on all sides by women that seem to have issues. Madeline’s mother, Pauline Fairchild, has made it her sole purpose in life to see at least one of her daughters marry into a rich, high-society family. To that purpose, Pauline has begun a campaign to set up a match between Madeline’s younger sister Elyse and the handsome (and very rich) Drew Winthrop, the son of a rich Chicago socialite. Elyse, a very beautiful and pious young lady, compliantly defers to the machinations of her mother despite the fact that she has no real feelings for the young man. Much to her chagrin, Madeline’s life is further complicated by her sister-in-law, Emily Turner, who despite her advanced age of twenty (by village standards), finds the subject of marriage to not only be a bore but, at the moment, out of the question. Emily, a very pretty and intelligent girl, finds the confines of Angel Creek to be inhibiting. Almost every waking moment of her life seems to be devoted to causing scandal to the neighborhood and distress to her relatives. Nora finds herself on the outside looking in during these escapades. As an observer, she does not need to involve herself in the interesting and sometimes strange lives of her employers. It is only when her friend Aileen Griffin finds herself in a distressful predicament that Nora is forced to think about the plight of other women at all. She herself, has been temporarily sheltered from the realities of life by living under the protection of the Turners. Despite the longtime ability of Angel Creek to keep itself separated from the outside influences of the rest of the country, the inevitable finally happens. Technology and change begin to gradually seep into the little community. The beginning of this evolution begins with the arrival of two very different strangers. One is a Jewish lawyer named Jacob Rothstein. Jacob is an attractive and very intelligent man with a mysterious past. Since no person of the Jewish faith has ever lived in Angel Creek, he automatically becomes a curiosity of sorts. The gentleman further confuses the general population by admitting publicly that he does not believe in God at all—something that is an affront to everyone in the village with religious sensibilities. The second man is Douglas Parnell. Douglas is a very poor but extremely industrious drifter. When he arrives in Angel Creek, simply because he’s run out of money, the young man decides to stay. Despite what seems to be Angel Creek’s ability to hold itself aloof from the rest of the country, it is unable to avoid the political tremors that have engulfed the rest of the country. The depression of 1893 and the Spanish American War both begin to intrude into the lives of the villagers. Every part of the complicated, labor-intensive process was handled within the deceased's community. This process included preparation of the body for burial, making a wooden coffin, digging the grave, and overseeing the burial ceremony, as well as observing a wide variety of customs and superstitions. These traditions, especially in rural communities, remained the norm up through the end of World War II, after which a variety of factors, primarily the loss of manpower and the rise of the funeral industry, brought about the end of most customs. Gone to the Grave, a meticulous autopsy of this now vanished way of life and death, documents mourning and practical rituals through interviews, diaries and reminiscences, obituaries, and a wide variety of other sources. Abby Burnett covers attempts to stave off death; passings that, for various reasons, could not be mourned according to tradition; factors contributing to high maternal and infant mortality; and the ways in which loss was expressed though obituaries and epitaphs. Among these Sources, the Chronica XXIV Ministrorum Generalium Ordinis fratrum Minorum by Arnald of Sarrant merits particular attention. It tells the story of the Franciscan Order from the time of Saint Francis till the beginning of the Western Schism in 1378, and therefore contains valuable information regarding the initial period of Franciscan history. Unfortunately it is not easily available in translation because of its voluminous nature. In fact, it covers a total of 712 pages of the third volume of Analecta Franciscana, published by the Franciscan editors of Quaracchi in 1897. Our aim has been that of embarking on the arduous task of translating this voluminous work of history into English from the original Latin. This translation is the fruit of three years of work, and we are now happy to present it to the general public. Because of its voluminous nature we intend to divide it into 5 sections, four of which cover the 575 pages of text and one the appendixes. The whole 575 page Chronicle is here available in 4 sections covering respectively the following historical periods: (1) Saint Francis and the early Franciscan fraternity; (2) The Generals from brother Elias as vicar (1227) to Saint Bonaventure (1274); (3) The Generals from Jerome of Ascoli (1274) to Michael of Cesena (1328); (4) The Generals from Gerard Eudes (1329) to Leonard of Giffoni (1378). A last section will be the translation of the appendixes. The translation is enriched by footnotes and explanations on the various historical events narrated and on the personages of the Chronicle. Our aim has been simply that of providing a readable translation, without pretending to be scholars of mediaeval Latin. We hope that the service we are offering at such an enormous cost of time and personal effort will be of benefit both to students of Franciscan history as well as to those who are qualified to correct its inaccuracies, and who we gratefully thank for their eventual advice and corrections
