Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978, Subjective Meaning and Culture presents a framework and a method for the comparative study of the perceptions, attitudes, and cultural frames of reference shared by groups of people. The framework is the notion of subjective meaning, and the method is that of word associations. The authors present a detailed account of some particular cross-cultural and intergroup comparisons using the word-association technique described in this volume. However, rather than emphasize comparisons they focus on the technique itself as a method in the investigation of subjective meaning and with it subjective culture. Their purpose was to introduce a research capability which offered new kinds of information and made critical aspects of subjective meaning accessible to empirical investigation. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

The various methods give complementary information. The data were obtained from studies of 'the subjective culture' of Americans and Greeks. Comparable instruments were administered to the two cultural groups and the results are presented in terms of the differences between American and Greek perceptions of social reality. The analysis of subjective culture is likely to help in the understanding of transcultural conflict, as well as in the development of theory concerning interpersonal attitudes, interpersonal behavior, and conflict resolution. Yet only in the last decades has the study of well-being become a scientific endeavor. This book is based on the idea that we can empirically study quality of life and make cross-society comparisons of subjective well-being (SWB). A potential problem in studying SWB across societies is that of cultural relativism: if societies have different values, the members of those societies will use different criteria in evaluating the success of their society. By examining, however, such aspects of SWB as whether people believe they are living correctly, whether they enjoy their lives, and whether others important to them believe they are living well, SWB can represent the degree to which people in a society are achieving the values they hold dear. The contributors analyze SWB in relation to money, age, gender, democracy, and other factors. Among the interesting findings is that although wealthy nations are on average happier than poor ones, people do not get happier as a wealthy nation grows wealthier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sample of approximately 10,000 social behaviors was elicited independently using identical procedures, from American and Greek Ss. The lists of social behaviors were subjected to facet analysis, which reduced them to a set of 120 maximally heterogeneous social behaviors in each culture. These behaviors were employed in the construction of two instruments: (a) A Role Differential, which consists of roles judged on scales defined by social behaviors: (b) A Behavioral Differential which consists of stimulus persons judged on scales defined by social behaviors. In each culture, the Role Differential consisted of 100 roles (e.g., father-son, boss-subordinate, daughter-mother) which were judged by male students on 120 social behavior scales. The Ss were instructed to indicate whether in their culture each of the behaviors is appropriate when it is undertaken by the first member of the role-pair towards the second member. The Behavioral Differential consisted of 96 stimulus persons (described by their occupation, race, sex, age, religion, and verbal fluency) which were judged by similar samples of male students on the same 120 social behavior scales. The Ss were instructed to indicate whether or not they would behave in the way specified by the scales towards each of the stimulus persons. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Sandvik, Diener, and Seidlitz (1993) paper is another that has received widespread attention because it documented the fact that self-report well-being scales correlate with a number of other methods of measuring the same concepts, such as with reports by knowledgeable “informants” (family and friends), expe- ence sampling measurement, and the memory for good versus bad life events. A single factor was found to underlie measures using different methods, and a n- ber of different well-being self-report measures were found to correlate with the non-self-report measures. Thus, although the self-report measures of well-being are imperfect, and can be in uenced by response artifacts, they have substantial validity as shown by their correlations with measurements based on alternative methods. Whereas the Pavot and Diener article reviewed the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Lucas, Diener, and Larsen (2003) paper reviews various approaches to assessing positive emotions. As we wrote in the chapter in this volume in which we present new measures, we do not consider any of the existing measures of positive affect to be entirely acceptable for measuring subjective well-being in the affect area, and that is why we have created and validated a new measure.
