Book The American Unity Plan

Download or read book The American Unity Plan written by Alan Nager and published by Bublish, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-11-05 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can unity be achieved in America or are we too divided as a nation? Can American principles such as fairness, equality under the law, and reasonable accommodation be applied to many of America’s greatest needs? America is looking for real solutions that are bold and can be supported by even the most ardent Conservatives and Progressives. Without a long-term plan to address the social safety net (retirement, healthcare, and education), immigration, climate defenses, taxation, inflation, and the federal budget, we will continue to devolve into separate Americas. The current proposals by both political parties are incrementally making these problems worse, putting future generations at risk. Rather, The American Unity Plan is a fully integrated, bold solution that can be supported by the American people. It is a uniquely American roadmap for long-term success incorporating ideas from across the political spectrum.

Book Slavery and the Peculiar Solution

Download or read book Slavery and the Peculiar Solution written by Eric Burin and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An exceptional work that will stand for years as the best study of the African colonization movement. Burin's insights into this often misunderstood idea will be appreciated by all historians of the early national era. The research, both archival and secondary, is excellent."--Douglas Egerton, Le Moyne College "Burin adds significantly to our understanding of the world view of slaveholding colonizationists, of their negotiations with prospectively freed people, and of their struggle with proslavery critics of colonization. . . . Historians of proslavery thought will find new ideas and information here."--Torrey Stephen Whitman, Mount St. Mary’s College From the early 1700s through the late 1800s, many whites advocated removing blacks from America. The American Colonization Society (ACS) epitomized this desire to deport black people. Founded in 1816, the ACS championed the repatriation of black Americans to Liberia in West Africa. Supported by James Madison, James Monroe, Henry Clay, and other notables, the ACS sent thousands of black emigrants to Liberia. In examining the ACS’s activities in America and Africa, Eric Burin assesses the organization’s impact on slavery and race relations. Burin focuses on ACS manumissions—that is, instances wherein slaves were freed on the condition that they go to Liberia. In doing so, he provides the first account of the ACS that covers the entire South throughout the antebellum era. He investigates everyone involved in the society’s affairs, from the emancipators and freedpersons at the center to the colonization agents, free blacks, southern jurists, newspaper editors, neighboring whites, proslavery ideologues, northern colonizationists, and abolitionists on the periphery. In mixing a panoramic view of ACS operations with close-ups on individual participants, Burin presents a unique, bifocal perspective on the ACS. Although colonization leaders initially envisioned their program as a pacific enterprise, in reality the push-and-pull among emancipators, freedpersons, and others rendered ACS manumissions logistically complex, financially troublesome, legally complicated, and at times socially disruptive enterprises. Like pebbles dropped in water, ACS manumissions rippled outward, destabilizing slavery in their wake. Based on extensive archival research and a database of 11,000 ACS emigrants, Burin’s study offers new insights concerning the origins, intentions, activities, and fate of the colonization movement.

Book The 4 Solution

Download or read book The 4 Solution written by The Bush Institute and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2012-07-17 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by President George W. Bush With contributions from world renowned economists and Nobel prizewinners, The 4% Solution is a blueprint for restoring America’s economic health The United States is reaching a pivotal point in its economic history. Millions of Americans owe more on their homes than they are worth, long-term unemployment is alarmingly high, and the Congressional Budget Office is projecting a sustainable growth rate of only 2.3%—a full percentage point below the average for the past sixty years. Unless a turnaround comes quickly, the United States could be mired in debt for years to come and millions of Americans will be pushed to the sidelines of the economy. The 4% Solution offers clear and unflinching ideas on how to revive America’s economy. It sets a positive economic goal and asks some of the top economic minds on how to achieve it. With a focus on removing government constraints, The 4% Solution defines the policies that will allow Americans to save, invest, and create the jobs that the United States needs. The 4% Solution draws on the best minds in the business, including five Nobel laureates: · Robert E. Lucas, Jr., on the history and future of economic growth · Gary S. Becker on why we need immigrants in order to grow · Edward Prescott on the cost (to growth) of the welfare state · Vernon Smith on why housing leads us into and out of recessions · Myron Scholes on why we need to innovate in order to grow the economy

Book The One Percent Solution

Download or read book The One Percent Solution written by Gordon Lafer and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the 2010 Citizens United decision, it's become commonplace to note the growing political dominance of a small segment of the economic elite. But what exactly are those members of the elite doing with their newfound influence? The One Percent Solution provides an answer to this question for the first time. Gordon Lafer's book is a comprehensive account of legislation promoted by the nation's biggest corporate lobbies across all fifty state legislatures and encompassing a wide range of labor and economic policies. In an era of growing economic insecurity, it turns out that one of the main reasons life is becoming harder for American workers is a relentless—and concerted—offensive by the country’s best-funded and most powerful political forces: corporate lobbies empowered by the Supreme Court to influence legislative outcomes with an endless supply of cash. These actors have successfully championed hundreds of new laws that lower wages, eliminate paid sick leave, undo the right to sue over job discrimination, and cut essential public services.Lafer shows how corporate strategies have been shaped by twenty-first-century conditions—including globalization, economic decline, and the populism reflected in both the Trump and Sanders campaigns of 2016. Perhaps most important, Lafer shows that the corporate legislative agenda has come to endanger the scope of democracy itself. For anyone who wants to know what to expect from corporate-backed Republican leadership in Washington, D.C., there is no better guide than this record of what the same set of actors has been doing in the state legislatures under its control.

Book The Forgotten Americans

Download or read book The Forgotten Americans written by Isabel Sawhill and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sobering account of a disenfranchised American working class and important policy solutions to the nation's economic inequalities One of the country's leading scholars on economics and social policy, Isabel Sawhill addresses the enormous divisions in American society--economic, cultural, and political--and what might be done to bridge them. Widening inequality and the loss of jobs to trade and technology has left a significant portion of the American workforce disenfranchised and skeptical of governments and corporations alike. And yet both have a role to play in improving the country for all. Sawhill argues for a policy agenda based on mainstream values, such as family, education, and work. Although many have lost faith in government programs designed to help them, there are still trusted institutions on both the local and the federal level that can deliver better job opportunities and higher wages to those who have been left behind. At the same time, the private sector needs to reexamine how it trains and rewards employees. This book provides a clear-headed and middle-way path to a better-functioning society in which personal responsibility is honored and inclusive capitalism and more broadly shared growth are once more the norm.

Book The Two State Solution for America

Download or read book The Two State Solution for America written by Thomas M Kempf and published by Two-State Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a revolutionary idea for transforming the government of the United States of America into one where Democrats and Republicans can live in harmony with each other and never have to fight again. Each group will control their own parts of the country independently of the other, yet the States will still be United. This idea mimics secession but without actual secession, and is the most unique and original solution to America's political problems ever devised. It gives all citizens the choice to live in the government of their dreams, within the confines of the American borders - and they have the ability to change their minds about it at any time. How does it do this? It aligns Democrat-controlled counties and Republican-controlled counties into Democrat states and Republican states, respectively. Then it aligns those states into two Regions, one controlled by the Democrats and one by the Republicans. Each Region has a government that functions as its own soverign nation, but for _domestic laws only_. There will still be a federal government that performs the duties it was originally tasked with by our forefathers, but it will leave the day-to-day functioning of life to the people in each Region. It has benefits for everybody that you simply cannot imagine, such as the end to all racism in America. It solves the gun problem, abortion, welfare, healthcare, and nearly every issue known to plague human relations. Who wouldn’t want that? And best of all, it is very doable -- the author has described in detail exactly how it can be accomplished. All that is needed now is for the people to support and implement it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dissatisfaction with the American government is at an all-time high. There are lots of good ideas on policy changes that could make a measurable impact. But these all overlook one crucial fact: America has lost the structural ability to consistently deliver effective policy because of the decay in the system itself. Bad government can't be counted on to pass good laws. For all the great ideas and debate on issues like health care, immigration, taxes, defense, foreign policy and climate change, it's the system itself that needs rehabilitation. In 'How to Fix America, ' Phillip A. Barlag proposes a simple and elegant solution to modify the system from within. It's innovation, not revolution, that's required to take the best of the American system of government and build on a foundation that was laid with the ratification of the Constitution 225 years ago. In this neutral and balanced book, Barlag offers a radical call to moderation and civility, and offers an innovative but pragmatic way to reconnect elected officials with the people they are supposed to serve. For anyone interested in politics, American history or current affairs, this fast-paced book is a can't-miss.

Download or read book 5 Solutions to Save America written by Douglas V. Gibbs and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Franklin's iconic words to Elizabeth Powel, upon leaving the Constitutional Convention, were, "A republic, ma'am, if you can keep it." The Constitution was written to stand the test of time, and to resist the fiery arrows of tyrants. The modern political atmosphere, however, leaves most Americans uneasy. Have we lost our republic? America's Constitution Authority, Douglas V. Gibbs, reminds us that while our republic has not been lost, we teeter on the edge of a treacherous cliff. While we have not passed the sign that reads, "the point of no return," we are close enough to it that we can read the small print on the bottom which says, "Made in China." How do we, as Americans, regain a foothold on our journey to restore the constitutional republic, and reestablish the principles and philosophies of the United States Constitution? We have failed to focus on our own core responsibilities as citizens, and we have been allowing the sovereignty and autonomy of the States to be neutralized and dismantled. A ruling class has established itself in the halls of government, diminishing the power of We the People, and growing the power of an emerging oligarchy in America. The rise of tyranny in America should instill in us a patriotic and revolutionary call to action. We the People need to have the courage to take on the establishment, and be informed enough to know how to do it. Without an informed populace carrying out their civic duty of keeping the republic, how can the Blessings of Liberty be handed down to the next generation? Have we been experiencing such a steady decline in freedom that we have forgotten what liberty truly is? How do we restore our constitutional republic, especially at this stage in the game? The Founding Fathers gave us a quiver full of remedies to combat tyranny. All we must do is apply them during our advocacy to keep the republic. It's not too late to save America. The opportunity to keep the republic exists, and if properly informed of the solutions available to us, we can make the necessary adjustments so as to place America back on the proper path of liberty. The only questions that remain are, "Do we have the willingness to educate ourselves regarding those solutions?," and "Do we have the discipline to carry out those remedies, once we learn what they are?"

Book excerpt: What if every time one of life's problems arose, a singular system existed that produced its best solution? What if this system were a mental technology capable of bringing not only everyday dilemmas to their best outcome, but of bringing each difficulty people face including familial, health, economic, and scientific challenges to their best conclusion? This intellectual technology exists; it is The American Mind. Elements of what was to become the American Mind had been evolving in the Middle East and in Europe for centuries prior to making their way across the Atlantic Ocean. The United States of America was founded by men possessing this entirely new way of dealing with one's surroundings. The world gasped at such bravado: "Without a monarch to lead them, they will never succeed." Succeed? No civilization the world had ever known, nor has ever seen, compares in any scientific, educational, cultural, economic or any other societal category you can think of with the United States of America. In its historically short span, America has provided for its citizens and for the world at large monumental advances in the human condition. How did this happen, exactly? It happened because of the appearance of The American Mind. What, exactly, are the elements that make up this Mind, this Intellect? Where did they come from? This book tells that story, without out doubt the greatest story in humankind's long march toward today. Learn and implement the principles that underpin the American Mind and your life will take on an impetus, a forward progression unmatched in anything you have endeavored to date.
