Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American School Readers: Fifth Reader It is not enough for children in the higher grades merely to read lessons in a reader. They should readunderstandingly and sympathetically, and should have their eyes opened more and more to the finer qualities of good literature. The authors believe that the use of this Fifth Reader will greatly help to this desirable end. The book, however, is not heavy, and the literature is not, like that of many fifth readers, beyond the com prehension of children. The questions for study are not learned and discouraging; on the contrary they are stimulating and suggestive, and will add to the pleasure of the reading. The authors beg leave gratefully to acknowledge the valuable criticism of the manuscript by Professor Charles W. Kent of the University of Virginia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American School Readers: First Reader The american school first reader is planned as the children's second reading book. It assumes that they can read the usual vocabulary of a good primer, either of this series or of any other. It is, however, closely related to the American School Primer. The children and their pets, whose acquaintance was made in that book, appear again here, with new experiences, in the earlier pages. But the keynote of the book is children's lore. The characters of the primer appear less and less frequently and finally drop out altogether. The latter part of the book contains children's literature only. The authors believe that this literature is of so excel lent a quality that it will intensify the interest of chil dren in the reading book, and hence in learning to read, and will also implant the seeds of good literary taste. Carefully organized lists of words for phonic drill are given on pages 135 - 137. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American School Readers: Third Reader The subject matter has four chief elements: folklore and fairy story, historical stories, nature stories, and poems. The folklore and fairy stories are full of interest to children; they have humor and are decidedly ethical. The offensive stories of wicked relatives are omitted, as being immoral in their tendency. In their place are tales of enterprise and of common life which have become classics, and which tend to elevate the minds and characters of children. Historical stories are valuable at this age, because, while children are interested in fairy tales, they are also interested in real people, and this interest should be fostered in the school readers; so we have stories of Washington, of Lincoln, of Charlemagne, and of other historical characters, all by standard authors. Among these hills were small valleys leading into the one through which the river wound its way. The boy beheld this delightful scene with a look Of inquiry on his face. What could he be thinking about? What did he wish to inquire about? Was it the curious curves of the hills, giving such grace to the land scape, that pleased him? Book The Jones Fourth Reader Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Jones Fourth Reader Classic Reprint written by L. H. Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jones Fourth Reader This book is intended to cover the work in reading for the fourth and fifth school years. Pupils who enter the fourth school year are supposed to have mastered to at least a fair degree the mechanics of learning to read. They may therefore begin to appreciate the better class of literature, in which ideas are put forth in artistic form. The transition to such literature must needs be made slowly and carefully, inasmuch as the new matter brings with it a somewhat new vocabulary and a more complicated construction of sentence. The selections in the first part of this reader have been chosen with especial reference to bridging over for the child the natural chasm between the forms of thought and language of childhood and those appropriate to youth. The selections lead to the best in literature that is available for young readers. Attention is called particularly to the fact that many of the selections used are organic parts of larger works, to which the notice and interest of pupils will naturally be directed through the reading of these selected parts. Care has been taken that the part chosen in each case shall constitute an artistic literary whole, while sustaining its organic relations to the work from which it is taken. Great care has also been given to the kind and range of ideas embodied. The book has a distinctly moral bearing, assisting the young to form right ideas of life and conduct. Every department of laudable human aspiration and endeavor is rep resented in some appropriate concrete form, and every noble instinct is reenforced by its appropriate stimulus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Reader We trust that the method of teaching the meaning of words through the exercises at the end of the lessons will commend itself to teachers, and that they will enlarge very much upon the plan thus indicated. The repetition of formal definitions rarely leaves any impression upon a child's mind. Words are tools: by using them we find out what they are good for; but telling their purpose, instead of working with them, does little to in crease their usefulness in our hands. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Reader: For the Use of Schools As it respects the general plan of these works, the author lays little claim to originality. The idea of prefacing the lessons by a series of Rule, ado ted in the Third Reader, and in this also, was introduced by Murray, ong since, and has been acted Upon by others. The application of these rules, as practised in the last two volumes of this series, is believed to be peculiar, and it is hoped may be useful. The following of the reading lessons with spelling lessons derived from the reading matter, has been long practised and is here adopted. The pointing out of inaccurate renunciation, and the questions for examina tion, as to the sense an meaning of the lessons, are common and obvious means of instruction. The Etymological Exercises in this volume are a new application of what has been before the public for several years. The plan of requiring pupils to study reading lessons, and one which is deemed very important, appears to have been in successful practice in Europe for a considerable period. The objects of this have been stated to be, to render the acquiring of the art of Reading more easy and agreeable to the pupil to make the particular knowledge contained in the lessons available to him and, by a careful analysis of each sentence, to give him a thorough acquaintance with our language. These objects are too important to be overlooked, and the author has sought to ensure their attainment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Fourth Reader of the School and Family Series Classic Reprint written by Marcius Willson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fourth Reader of the School and Family Series Teachers will observe that, while we have aimed to make the several di visions, or Parts, in this Reader as instructive as possible, we have not lost sight of the importance of making them interesting also; and to this end we have introduced great variety in matter and manner, and illustra tions which are valuable lessons in themselves. For the sake of that regular gradation which is highly essential in School Readers, and to avoid introducing too much on any one subject in the same book, we have made two divisions each of Human Physiology, Botany, and Natural Philosophy, and have given only the first and easier portion Of each subject in the present Reader. The second divisions will be contained in the Fifth Reader. Zoology is here continued in the division entitled Ornithology, or Birds. For the beautiful illustrations in this part we are indebted to the same art ist (parsons) to whom we expressed our obligations for the admirable draw ings Of animals in the Third Reader. In Part IV., Miscellaneous, we have given a few old standard pieces, because they are unsurpassed in merit, will be new to every succeeding generation, and have no superiors as reading exercises. Part VI, entitled Sketches from Sacred History, partially develops the plan which will be pursued in the Historical divisions of the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Readers. I am indebted for valuable aid in the departments of Botany and Natu ral Philosophy to Professor N. B. Webster, of Virginia, by whom portions Of those divisions and some original and very happy illustrations of philo sophical principles were furnished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wide Awake Fourth Reader The fourth reader of a series does not deal so much With mechanical details, which Should have been mastered in the lower grades, as with the more practical and aesthetic Sides of reading. The pupils are now beginning to learn by reading instead of learn ing to read; and the selections should be of two distinct types, those which contain definite statements of fact to be read and digested, and those which, by their entertaining style and liter ary merit, will lead to an appreciation and love of the best books. In other words, the pupils must learn to read intelligently, so that they may be prepared for the more serious study of history and geography, and they must also acquire a taste for real liter ature and become acquainted with good authors. All of the prose selections and many of the poems in this book are copyrighted material. Book The Hill Readers Vol 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Hill Readers Vol 4 Classic Reprint written by Daniel Harvey Hill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hill Readers, Vol. 4 School readers enter more deeply into the lives and characters of children than do the other books of the public school curriculum. What can ever drive from the mind the stories and the poems of childhood, or erase the impressions consciously or unconsciously drawn from them? The editors have striven to make this series of books worthy of their responsibility. The authors represented belong almost entirely to two classes: first, those who have won applause as writers for children; second, those who are members of the world's elect circle of writers. As far as is possible in readers, each selection is given in the very words of the author and in its literary entirety. To take advantage of the fact that the fourth-reader child is perhaps in his most expansive imaginative period, an unusually large number of new as well as classic myths and wonder stories have been incorporated in this book. As a large proportion of the school children of America live in the country, especial care has been taken to include a large and varied number of selections relating to rural life. These, it is hoped, will help to foster a love for nature and for the country home, open the eyes of children to the marvelous beauties around them, and bring them nearer the life that they are to lead. To help children attending schools in which there are few reference books, the biographical notes have been made fuller than in most readers.
