Book The American Salmon Fisherman

Download or read book The American Salmon Fisherman written by Henry P. Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Salmon Fisherman Salmon-fishing is to trout-fishing as is a father to his son. Though the stature and avoirdupois of the one may exceed that of the other, the relationship is notwithstanding none the less near. Apart from the immaterial difference of size, the appliances for salmon-fishing, the gaff excepted, are the appliances for trout-fishing. Alike as they are in material, alike in method of manufacture, and alike in that their adaptability to the end in view depends on the more or less perfect embodiment of the same principles of construction, it has been thought unnecessary to touch upon this branch of our subject in other than the briefest possible manner. As the lawyer refers in his bill of complaint to his documentary exhibits, and by that reference incorporates them in and makes them part of his plea, so I refer to my former volume, "Fly-Rods and Fly-Tackle," and make it part of this. The origin and quality of the crude materials, the methods by which they are converted into the finished article, the principles which should govern that conversion, and the comparative degree of excellence which each material and method affords, are therein considered at length. To review would be but to repeat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Fishermen s Frontier written by David F. Arnold and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2009-11-17 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Fishermen's Frontier, David Arnold examines the economic, social, cultural, and political context in which salmon have been harvested in southeast Alaska over the past 250 years. He starts with the aboriginal fishery, in which Native fishers lived in close connection with salmon ecosystems and developed rituals and lifeways that reflected their intimacy. The transformation of the salmon fishery in southeastern Alaska from an aboriginal resource to an industrial commodity has been fraught with historical ironies. Tribal peoples -- usually considered egalitarian and communal in nature -- managed their fisheries with a strict notion of property rights, while Euro-Americans -- so vested in the notion of property and ownership -- established a common-property fishery when they arrived in the late nineteenth century. In the twentieth century, federal conservation officials tried to rationalize the fishery by "improving" upon nature and promoting economic efficiency, but their uncritical embrace of scientific planning and their disregard for local knowledge degraded salmon habitat and encouraged a backlash from small-boat fishermen, who clung to their "irrational" ways. Meanwhile, Indian and white commercial fishermen engaged in identical labors, but established vastly different work cultures and identities based on competing notions of work and nature. Arnold concludes with a sobering analysis of the threats to present-day fishing cultures by forces beyond their control. However, the salmon fishery in southeastern Alaska is still very much alive, entangling salmon, fishermen, industrialists, scientists, and consumers in a living web of biological and human activity that has continued for thousands of years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fishing Probably few persons who visited the late International Fisheries Exhibition in South Kensington could fail to have been struck by the multiplicity, and, to the un initiated, complexity of the engines and appliances used in the capture of fish. The Observation applies even more to the 'angler' - a generic term that I have a special objection to, by the way, but let us say to the fisherman who uses a rod - than to the 'fisherman' proper, whose weapons are net and hand-line, and who 'occupies his business in great waters.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rod and River, or Fly-Fishing for Salmon, Trout and Grayling As long as there are rivers, and fish in them, so long there will be fishermen. The brotherhood of anglers is large, and the methods they employ to catch fish many and various. It is my intention to treat of fishing for salmon, trout, and grayling only in the following pages, restricting myself to the consideration of these three varieties Of the Salmonidae, their capture by means of the artificial fly, and the natural flies which form food for trout and grayling. Scores of books have from time to time been written on matters piscatorial, and it may be said, Still they come.' Download or read book The Salmon Classic Reprint written by Alfred Erskine Gathorne-Hardy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Salmon The able author of the Badminton volume 'on fishing writes of the great progress of our knowledge on the subject during the last two decades. 'no doubt some problems have been solved by experi ment and observation, but I incline to rather a modest view of the advance made, and to dwell upon the difficulties still unsolved, rather than upon the additions made to our stock of positive information. Let me take Old Izaak Walton's Complete Angler, ' published in 1653, to see what was known at that time by that not very accurate compiler and observer, premising that most of his information was what lawyers would call hearsay' only, and that it is not certain that he ever saw a live salmon in his life. It is true that he makes a casual allusion to having caught them; but he gives no account of 3his adventures with them and they did not haunt his usual hunting grounds.
