Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Red Cross in Greece The American Red Cross has maintained a mission in Greece for a period of nine months. During that period the uniforms of the American Red Cross officer and of the American Red Cross trained nurse and social worker have become familiar to a large proportion of the Greek people; and the people of certain sections of the country have been able to observe with their own eyes the business upon which the American organization has been engaged. We need no introduction, for example, to the inhabitants of Eastern Macedonia and the larger Aegean islands; and the people in Athens, in a general way, know the purpose of the mission. But probably the Greek people as a whole have been somewhat at a loss to understand why the American Red Cross was here - what were the motives and objects of the mission; and, naturally, they have had little opportunity of learning what we have actually been doing in Greece - the nature and extent of our undertakings. It has, therefore, seemed to me, as head of the mission, proper to issue this statement about the American Red Cross Commission to Greece, and to review briefly, the work upon which we have been engaged and which has now been brought to a conclusion. For the mission will have failed in one of its objects if, as a result of our sojourn in Greece, the Greek people and the American people are not drawn together in closer bonds of sympathy, understanding and friendship. Book American Influence in Greece 1917 1929

Download or read book American Influence in Greece 1917 1929 written by Louis P. Cassimatis and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diplomatic relations between Greece and the United States in the interwar period have received scant attention from historians, primarily because of the non-political and non-military role of the United States in that part of the world prior to the Second World War. The American presence in Greece after 1917, however, would be fundamental to the social and economic development of the Greek nation, while American influence would eventually permeate all levels of Greek society. Dr. Cassimatis offers the first, full-length account of this formative period in the history of Greek-American diplomacy. The issues separating the governments of the United States and Greece in the 1920s were simultaneously self-contained and international in scope. For Greece, they were self-contained because they involved solutions to domestic problems affecting the welfare--indeed, the survival--of the Greek nation. Internationally, they were interconnected because efforts to bring about their resolution contributed to an American entanglement in the Near-East policies of Great Britain, France and Italy. Thus, American loans, commercial aggrandizement, the inroads of American capital, philanthropy, and cultural relations were but components of a larger diplomatic setting in which the interests of the United States came into conflict with the interests of the Western European powers.

This book was released on 2006-07-06 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a pioneering study of the impact of the famine that occurred in Greece during its occupation by German, Italian and Bulgarian forces in 1941 and 1942. Violetta Hionidou examines the courses and politics of this food crisis, focusing on the demography of the famine and the effectiveness of the relief operations. Her interdisciplinary approach combines demographic, historical and anthropological methodologies to offer a comprehensive account of the famine. This important study makes a major contribution to current debates about mortality and its causes during famines.
