Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Geologist, Vol. 3: A Monthly Journal of Geology and Allied Sciences; January to June, 1889 The characteristics of professor Irving as a scientific investi gator and writer are too well known to the readers of this magazine to need analysis here. Personally, to those who came within the circle of his intimate acquaintance, he possessed rare charms of character. Sincere, frank, conscientious inthe highest degree, he was a warm and true friend. Possessed of a rollicking brusque humor, his intercourse was marked by a freshness that was a source Of constant enjoyment and attrae tion to his intimate associates. NO phrase better expresses it than picturesqueness. Modest and retiring, the number Of his close friends was not large but their attachment to him was strong. The full Strength Of these attachments has only been realized in their breaking. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Geologist, Vol. 31: A Monthly Journal of Geology and Allied Sciences; January to June, 1903 This period was one of great activity in the Canadian sur vey. The first copies of Logan's large Map of the Geology of Canada and adjacent parts of the United States prepared for the engraver by Robert Barlow, were received during the first month of Selwyn's administration from Edward Stan ford, the publisher, Charing Cross, London. As an instance of the remarkable activity and energy dis played by the second director of the Geological Survey of Can ada at the outset of his career in Canada, it may be remarked that he not only proposed to the Hon. Joseph Howe the various points noted above but also presented the annual Summary report of the geological investigation made by the staff the previous year. He further impressed upon the government the advisability of placing a special appropriation in the estimates of the year for the distribution of Logan's large map just received. Submitting at the same time a list of public and educational institutions, libraries, etc., where the said map would do a great deal of good to Canada. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Geologist, Vol. 8: A Monthly Journal of Geology and Allied Sciences, July to December, 1891 Situated right in the midst of the Taconic region Mt. Greylock has been often alluded to during the last seventy years in the much debated Taconic Question. Professors C. Dewey, E. Emmons, E. Hitchcock and J. D. Dana are the principal authorities on the geology of the mountain. The general synclinal structure of the mass and also the fact that it consists mainly of certain schists underlaid by limestone are well known. Professor Dana has also conjectured the anticlinal structure of the hollow which separates two of its ridges. The following description is based upon the new 20 ft. Contour map made by the topographers of the U. S. Geological Survey, and upon extended and laborious geological explorations, and upon the careful microscopic study of lithological specimens by Mr. J. E. Wolff. The results of modern topography, orography and petrography have been brought to bear upon the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Geologist, 1888, Vol. 1: A Monthly Journal of Geology and Allied Sciences The starting of a new scientific journal is a step which should be accompanied by a statement of the reasons and purposes which have actuated its originator*. These reasons and purposes should form the platform of principles, and the arena of action which should characterize the publication. The science of geology is comprehensive, and depends for its progress on the special researches of laborers in all the t natural sciences. The editors of Tim American Geologist have lamented from time to time the lack of a distinctively geological journal in the United States, whose axis should be to coordinate and express the results of these special labors on the general science of geology, and which should serve as a repository of the progressive steps which the science, as such, makes from year to year. They have lamented the absence of a journal which should take cognizance of the various laboratories of the world, and of the publications that emanate from the various scientific centers, and, culling from them all such facts and discussions as throw light 011 the history and console-titles of the globe, should authentically eliminate for its subscribers the essential grand results, freed from the distractions of too much detail. These results, mingled with a confusion of unsystematized details, are now scattered through journals and special publications which arc devoted to the special sciences, and arc inaccessible and unavailable to the geologist without the expenditure of much time and money.
