Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the American College Intermediate education began at seven, when the boy was registered as a prospective citizen and began to go to school. The school houses were public property and were rented to the schoolmasters, of whom there were two; one for gymnastic, and the other for music; and to both the pupil went every day. Higher education began at about fourteen, and continued until the young man reached his majority. During this period the elegant gym nastic of the preceding period was continued, and was supplemented by athletic and military training. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American College, in American Life I have believed, and still believe, that through the securing of this double purpose the college may be able to be a richer blessing to this great life of which the college is a part, and which it is set to serve. No book of a kind such as this can make any pretence of being complete. This volume includes the consideration of only a few of the more vital questions. Other questions, quite as vital possibly, I hope to be able to discuss in other volumes. For the American college, like American life or the life of any progressive people, is full of infinite suggestions appealing to thought or to action. Book The American Colleges and Universities in the Great War 1914 1919

This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Colleges and Universities in the Great War, 1914-1919: A History The lack of adequate interpretation of the part which the American colleges, both Northern and Southern, played in the Civil War has long seemed to me a public and an academic misfortune. The possibility of filling this lack lessens with each passing year. The share which the American college and university had in the World's War was at least as significant and impressive as that which the Civil 5 War represents. Early, therefore, in the great struggle, I began to collect materials for its academic history. These materials include evidences furnished directly by hundreds of institutions, as well as the more typical sources of books, pamphlets, and newspapers. To each college officer, who has thus graciously and generously aided me, I am grateful. This history, concerned with a small social and educational group, has yet largest relations. For it helps to prove that the higher education, in the person of its teachers and students of successive generations, trains men for the service of the nation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American College: A Criticism This book is based on an educational experience of almost twenty years, in the course Of which I prepared many pupils for college; I tried also to ob serve their development during and after their college careers. Subse quently I spent two years as graduate student at two different American uni versities, and something above a year in England and Germany, where I eu joyed opportunities for observation. I have, moreover, frequently compared notes with teachers in secondary schools, colleges, universities and pro fessional schools, whose experience has been in some respects fuller and more. Book American College Course Classic Reprint

Download or read book American College Course Classic Reprint written by Seymour Eaton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American College Course As stated in the Introductory Note to the first volume of the present series, these books are in reality, as their names imply, popular studies. Everything in them has been written or prepared with the needs of the general reader or student in view as distinct from those of the professed special student. The intention has been to afford such information respecting the authors selected for treatment as will make the study of them not only a pleasure, but an easy pleasure. To that end broad and general views have been presented rather than minute and special ones. Pains have been taken to illustrate the personalities of the authors; to show them as they were as men and citizens, and in their private life and home relations. Very useful, we trust, will be found the notes prepared for readers for use in their own individual studies of the authors. These notes are sufficiently complete to meet the needs of all classes of readers - those who desire to go pretty far in their studies, as well as those who have time and opportunity to go only a little way. Although published in three volumes, these studies constitute one continuous series. Ten authors have been selected for treatment, the ten greatest names in American literature. The student-reader should not rest satisfied until he has made a pretty thorough acquaintance with the whole ten. Book The American College in Relation to Liberal Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American College in Relation to Liberal Education Classic Reprint written by David Jayne Hill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American College in Relation to Liberal Education The University of Rochester had its beginning in a liberal and progressive apprehension of educational needs. It was distinctly seen by its founders that an atmosphere of human activity and social refinement is needed to stimulate intellectual culture and invigorate moral character; and, accordingly, this beautiful and prosperous city, which has since become even more conspicuously a centre of elevating influences, was chosen as its seat. Far enough West to feel the thrill of enterprise and to share in the optimistic hopes of Western life without being subject to its provincialisms; far enough East to enjoy the benefits of our oldest American civilization without being influenced by its archaic customs and colonial traditions - Rochester, on the principal highway between the great lakes and the Atlantic, satisfies all the conditions of an ideal university town. The company of men who have shaped the destinies of this institution was originally formed by the selective power of a common conviction that a great opportunity creates a great obligation; and the corporation has since been recruited from among those who shared in this conviction. The not inconsiderable resources which years of generosity and prudence have accumulated are mainly the continued tokens of the satisfaction and perseverance with which the fathers of the enterprise themselves and their colleagues in munificence have regarded their undertaking.
