They stood on their summer stands with corn fodder around, but not in front, and the upper story filled with straw. Download or read book The American Bee Journal Vol 8 written by G. S. Wagner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Bee Journal, Vol. 8: 1872-73 The extracted honey we sent to Philadelphia. Our bees did not do much 011 white clover, but when basswood came in bloom (july 15th), the bees kept us busy emptying out honey. \v e were fairly swimming in honey for about two weeks. We 'never saw bees gather honey faster than they did from basswood blossoms. Good swarms would fill their hives in two days when they had empty comb. Now we see the necessity of urging the bee keepers to cultivate the basswood. There is a great quantity of small basswood trees in the woods in this section which we can get to trans plant. Had it not been for basswood. We would not have got any profit from our bees. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Bee Journal, Vol. 4: 1868-69 Efforts have been made to overcome the dis advantages arising from repeated afterswarm ing, by uniting several small swarms so as to form one pretty strong stock. But this can scarcely be regarded as a rational process; for what avails it to deal thus with afterswarms, if their production ruins the parent colony, or so greatly reduces it that it can yield no surplus Prevention is here also better than cure; and for this reason we transpose parent stocks with the first swarms, after these have issued, in order to prevent after-swarming as much as possible. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Bee Journal, 1881, Vol. 17 The seeds are borne in pods much the size and appearance of the black mus tard. It blooms early in the spring, and continues in bloom until frost. As the season advances the spikes of the beautiful flowers continue to grow in length, with seeds and flowers in all stages of growth from the full pods to the new Opening bloom. The leaves throw off a very offensive odor when handled. As a honey-producing plant it is second to no other. In our apiary we have forty colonies of bees, and although we_are located among vegetable and fruit gardens our bees prefer this plant to all others. It is not troublesome in cultivated grounds, but prefers the roadside or waste places. We value it highly, and without doubt, is worthy the attention of bee-keepers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Bee Journal, 1872, Vol. 7 In the October numba' of the American Bee Journal, there is an article under the caption of The Coming Bee, upon which I wish to offer a few thoughts. I do so the more freely, because the writer requests any one who may have had experience with the kind of bees he describes, to report. I do not know what special qualities he may have found in bees less than half Italian; but my observation of that -kind of bees, has given me a very poor Opinion of them.'
