Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of essays on music and life by the famed classical pianist and composer Stephen Hough is one of the world’s leading pianists, winning global acclaim and numerous awards, both for his concerts and his recordings. He is also a writer, composer, and painter, and has been described by The Economist as one of “Twenty Living Polymaths.” Hough writes informally and engagingly about music and the life of a musician, from the broader aspects of what it is to walk out onto a stage or to make a recording, to specialist tips from deep inside the practice room: how to trill, how to pedal, how to practice. He also writes vividly about people he’s known, places he’s traveled to, books he’s read, paintings he’s seen; and he touches on more controversial subjects, such as assisted suicide and abortion. Even religion is there—the possibility of the existence of God, problems with some biblical texts, and the challenges involved in being a gay Catholic. Rough Ideas is an illuminating, constantly surprising introduction to the life and mind of one of our great cultural figures.

During one such suicide attempt, Subodh happens to meet Vanhi, a schoolgirl near a railway track. Their initial conversation enlightens him and the grief disappears in no time, because of her innocence and simplicity. All those intentions of committing suicide are metamorphosed by her audacity and the magical tiffin box that she carries. Subodh's incredible journey begins with the little one's brilliance and under the lights of Stephen Noronha. Every obstacle towards his journey creates an opportunity for himself and for the villagers at large. On achieving his ambitious dream, Stephen helps Subodh to deliver a powerful message to all the debt-ridden farmers. "Committing suicide is not the ultimate solution. A person hardly needs a few seconds to commit suicide and be relieved of it. The problem expands multifold, which later one’s family has to bear, lifelong. There exists a thin line between life and death while killing self. The thin lifeline is often neglected and crossed because of the huge burden of loans and poverty. If we remain calm and composed, we can see that thin lifeline, through our savior. The savior can be in any form, a living thing, or any object, close to us. The living thing can be any of our near and dear ones. If we look around patiently, our cattle too can be a rescuer, with their simple touch.”

Book excerpt: Many of us assume that our creative process is beyond our ability to influence, and pay attention to it only when it isn't working properly. For the most part, we go about our daily tasks and everything just "works." Until it doesn't. Adding to this lack of understanding is the rapidly accelerating pace of work. Each day we are face escalating expectations and a continual squeeze to do more with less. We are asked to produce an ever-increasing amount of brilliance in an ever-shrinking amount of time. There is an unspoken (or spoken!) expectation that we'll be accessible 24/7, and as a result we frequently feel like we're "always on." Now business creativity expert Todd Henry explains how to unleash your creative potential. Whether you're a creative by trade or an "accidental creative," this book will help you quickly and effectively integrate new ideas into your daily life.
Download or read book The Last Train written by Trevor Nevett and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this story came to me in Trinidad. For the last twenty years, I have been going back to the island every Christmas. Most of the children know me as Santa for I give out toys and sweets at parties. The look on some of the children's faces brings tears to my eyes, and this has really touched me. After the festive season is over, I then become the Englishman since I've done a quite few performances in the southern part of the island. This is a ghost story about two young boys who met an old man on a train, who happens to be a ghost. In March of this year (2011), after Carnival, I visited San Fernando on Harris Promenade Hill where "the Train" stands. I stood looking at it and thought that I could tell some stories about it. On my return as I slept the following night, I dreamt about the train. In my dream, a young boy came up and stood looking at me and started asking questions. "Do you have lots of train in your country?" I told him I came from England. He replied, "I know. You're the white Santa." His mom and dad also noticed me always in deep thought while sitting on the bench. I told them that I was writing a song about the train. "We live quite close to the house you are staying at. We know most of the people in the village. Lots of the people talked about the white man from England, but only a few know your name." That's how it started. I wrote half the story in Trinidad and finished it on my return to England.

So whether at a sales conference in corporate conference room hell or over lunch at a glamorous restaurant, Life's a Pitch tells you how to handle human transactions. A pitch is not a meeting, it's a drama. A pitch is not about transferring information, it's about transferring power. It is business, but it is also theatre. Part inspirational manual for business, part guidebook to a successful and happy social life, Life's a Pitch is written as the result of an accumulated half century of (mostly successful) pitching by the authors. Ground-breaking and genre-busting, it will transform the way you think about the art of persuasion for ever.

Download or read book Toilet Thoughts written by Schmoopy Publishing LLC and published by . This book was released on 2015-03-23 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toilet Thoughts started in a tiny beach house in San Diego. Because our best ideas always came to us on the can, my college roommate and I had placed a small journal in the bathroom to capture those thoughts. One morning after an epic party, we were pleasantly surprised to find dozens of other intriguing thoughts and scribbles left behind by our guests. Some were whimsical, some philosophical, and some were downright ridiculous. But they all left us with a smile on our face and itching to uncover the authors. Over the years, the collective voice of friends, family, and strangers was captured in that delightful little journal. I hope all the brilliant ideas that find their way into your very own copy of Toilet Thoughts will bring you as much joy as that little journal did back at our college beach house.
