Book excerpt: A whimsical tale in which family lore inspires newfound daring, told by Argentina's sleepiest ant Juan Hormiga, the greatest storyteller of his entire anthill, loves to recount his fearless grandfather's adventures. When Juan and his fellow ants gather around for storytime, he hypnotizes all with tales of his grandfather's many exploits - including his escape from an eagle's talons and the time he leapt from a tree with just a leaf for a parachute. When he's through telling these tales, Juan loves to cozy up for a nice long nap. He's such a serious napper that he takes up to ten siestas every day! Though well loved by his ant friends, Juan decides telling tales and sleeping aren't quite enough for him - it's time to set off on his own adventure. With whimsical, irresistible illustrations, Juan Hormiga affirms the joys of sharing stories, and of creating your own out in the world.

Book excerpt: Welcome to Red Twilight. Here men may become monsters and monsters can be beautiful. Snake Gekks, El Driver, and Richard Blake have escaped the darkness once, but the darkness has a terrible hunger for life. New plots arise and the hunters must do battle again, this time accompanied by allies: Joe Dove, a high-ranking member of the Von Richton Watchers society, and Reizuki Lowe, a mysterious and brilliant young man. Be it for love, honor, or duty, these warriors will stand and fight again for the fate of this world. Now they find themselves at odds with a new enigmatic man Marks Karingson, a man powerful enough to defeat death . . . What will your impotent God do? Your God has failed to deliver you from evil a dozen times already. Your prayers are quaint but utterly meaningless. Your worship is misplaced. The world will not be spared the never-ending darkness by any unseen father figure! Nothing but sweet hot blood spilled upon cold earth can hope to fulfill your miserable hallucinations of peace. I am the sword and the shield that will deliver you from the grip of sorrow. Only I can materialize your dreams, and I will cast away despair and I will do it if I have to send us all to hell first! Send me your lords and your kings, your sisters and your brothers, your bishops and your fools, sinners and saints. Let them all come and be enveloped by my rage! You can have your war, and when it ends, I alone will rise as a goddess from the ashes of dissilience. You shall leave behind. Your lord will grovel in disarray at the power I shall unveil. Book America s Banquet of Cultures

Download or read book America s Banquet of Cultures written by Ronald Fernández and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The melting pot is a myth, according to Fernandez, who shows that the United States is and always has been a banquet of cultures. As he argues, the best way to deal with the more than 20 million new immigrants since 1965 is to accept, recognize, and eagerly explore the differences among the American people. Fernandez seeks to forge a positive national consensus based on two building blocks. First, the nation's many ethnic groups can be a powerful source of unprecedented economic, artistic, and scientific creativity. Secondly, the nation's many ethnic groups offer a way to erase the black/white dichotomy which, masks the shared injustices of millions of European, Asian, African, Native, and Latino Americans. This is a provocative analysis of how we arrived at our current ethnic and racial dilemmas and what can be done to move beyond them. Scholars and students of American immigration and social policy as well as concerned citizens will find the book equally rewarding.

Book Romantic Parodies 1797 1831

    Book Details:
  • Author : David A. Kent
  • Publisher : Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press
  • Release : 1992
  • ISBN : 9780838634585
  • Pages : 428 pages

Download or read book Romantic Parodies 1797 1831 written by David A. Kent and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first collection of literary parodies, both poetry and prose, written during the English Romantic period. Many anthologies of literary parody have been published during the past century, but no previous selection has concentrated so intensively on a single period in English literary history, and no period in that history was more remarkable for the quantity and diversity of its parody. There was no Romantic writer untouched by parody, either as subject or as author, or even occasionally as both. Most parodies were intended to discredit the Romantics not only as poets but as individuals, and to disarm the threat they were seen as posing to establish literary and social norms. Because it focuses on the "swarm of imitative writers" about whom Robert Southey complained in an 1819 letter to Walter Savage Landor, this collection throws light on a large and often overlooked body of work whose authors had much more serious purposes than mere ridicule or amusement. Romantic parody situates itself between the eighteenth-century craft of burlesque and the nonsense verse that Victorian parody often became. This anthology demonstrates that parody is concerned with power: that it expresses ideological conflict, dramatizing clashes of ideas, styles, and values between different generations of writers, different classes and social groups, and even between writers of the same generation and class. Parody is not an inherently conservative mode; politically, it serves the whole range of opinion from extreme left to extreme right. While several of the parodies are playful - a few even affectionate - most angrily testify to the political, social, and aesthetic divisions embittering the times. Some parodies have aged more gracefully than others. But all contribute to a more vivid understanding of the era and to the reception accorded the most important Romantic writers. The venom and alarm of the response those writers provoked may surprise anyone who takes it for granted that the Romantics easily made their way into the mainstream of English literature. This volume reprints parodies by the major Romantics (including Coleridge, Keats, Byron, and Shelley) as well as by minor, obscure, and anonymous contemporaries. Several longer, better-known texts are given in their entirety, e.g., Peter Bell, Peter Bell III, and The Vision of Judgment, and there are also examples from distinguished collections such as Rejected Addresses, The Poetic Mirror, and Warreniana. Numerous shorter works are taken from periodicals of the time (such as Blackwood's or The Satirist), and many of these are reprinted for the first time since their initial publication. The foreword by Linda Hutcheon, "Parody and Romantic Ideology," examines the theoretical implications of Romantic parodies. The introduction, headnotes, and annotations by the editors place the parodies in their historical, social, and literary contexts.

Book The Miser and Other Plays

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jean-Baptiste Moliere
  • Publisher : Penguin UK
  • Release : 2004-05-27
  • ISBN : 014191338X
  • Pages : 311 pages

Download or read book The Miser and Other Plays written by Jean-Baptiste Moliere and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-05-27 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molière combined all the traditional elements of comedy - wit, slapstick, spectacle and satire - to create richly sophisticated and enduringly popular dramas. The Miser is the story of Harpagon, a mean-spirited old man who becomes obsessed with making money out of the marriage of his children, while The Hypochondriac, another study in obsession, is a brilliant satire on the medical profession. The School for Wives, in which an ageing domestic tyrant is foiled in his plans to marry his young ward, provoked such an outcry that Molière followed it with The School for Wives Criticized - a witty retort to those who disapproved of the play's supposed immorality. And while Don Juan is the darkest and most tragic of all the plays in this collection, it still mocks the soullessness of the skinflint with scathing irony.

Book Byron and the Poetics of Adversity

Download or read book Byron and the Poetics of Adversity written by Jerome McGann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long line of traditional, often conservative, criticism and cultural commentary deplored Byron as a slipshod poet. This pithy yet aptly poetic book, written by one of the world's foremost Romantic scholars, argues that assessment is badly mistaken. Byron's great subject is what he called 'Cant': the habit of abusing the world through misusing language. Setting up his poetry as a laboratory to investigate failures of writing, reading, and thinking, Byron delivered sharp critical judgment on the costs exacted by a careless approach to his Mother Tongue. Perspicuous readings of Byron alongside some of his Romantic contemporaries – Burns, Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley – reveal Byron's startling reconfiguration of poetry as a 'broken mirror' and shattered lamp. The paradoxical result was to argue that his age's contradictions, and his own, offered both ethical opportunities and a promise of poetic – broadly cultural – emancipation. This book represents a major contribution to ideas about Romanticism.

Book Around My World

Download or read book Around My World written by Jason Thiessen and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In life we are occasionally faced with detours. Some of them are thrust upon us just when we think we have life all figured out. Sometimes, however, they are self-created. We choose to take them, driven by some inner desire or passion. Author Jason Thiessen's extraordinary adventure was just such a detour borne of the dreams of a young boy with only an atlas as his guide to an unseen world. Nearly thirty years after those dreams began, they became a reality. Thiessen, a man with a wife, a career, and a mortgage, set out on a journey of discovery to find purpose and meaning while attempting to answer lifelong questions. His detour from an otherwise traditional life path took him to South America, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, India, Southeast Asia, and Australia, ultimately traveling twice the distance of the circumference of the earth. Just as his adventure brought him from the heights of the Andes to the depths of the Dead Sea, so too did Thiessen take an emotional journey from feelings of excitement, fulfillment, and joy to those of anger, frustration, and despair. Around My World: A Detour on Life's Journey tells a story for anyone who is on their own journey to reconcile modern-day pressures and realities with the insights that world travel can bring to one's life.
