Book excerpt: The definitive work on the use of the small (three and a half inch) lathe which has been the primer for every amateur, student and apprentice engineer, modelmaking hobbyist, small garage proprietor and light engineering operator since its original publication in 1948. The author has succeeded in giving a complete course of instruction, embracing almost every process that can be accomplished own the small lathe including information on tools, accessories and costs. The amateur's problems are tackled in a refreshingly practical manner, showing how the model engineer or small industrial user can perform a variety of operations normally requiring a whole workshop full of machinery. Photographs and drawings provide step-by-step instructions on a wide range of topics which will interest all engineers - from apprentices to retired hobbyists.

Book Turning Lathes

Download or read book Turning Lathes written by James Lukin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turning Lathes: A Manual for Technical Schools and Apprentices, a Guide "Amateurs and technical students will find this book of great advantage to them, as the aim of the author, whoever he may be, has been to explain very thoroughly the processes of the art of turning." - American Machinist. "This is a work of 158 pages, very fully illustrated, and with clear, descriptive matter on branches of lathe-work which are usually followed by amateurs. For these last it is valuable, as it contains succinct directions how to do certain work, how to avoid the many difficulties and the causes of failure in using certain kinds of tools; both wood and metal working are covered." - American Engineer. "This book is an illustrated treatise on lathe-work, designed for use in technical schools. The minuteness and practical nature of the directions given, however, make it of value to amateur turners. To those wishing to learn the art from the beginning, it would be hard to recommend a more useful book. Wood and metal turning are both considered, and the description of hand turning is especially full." - Scientific American. "We heartily commend the book to those interested in the subject. It will be found of special value to apprentices and others whose knowledge of lathe-work is limited." - The National Car Builder (American). "This work assumes that the reader has had no previous knowledge of the lathe whatever, and starting with an elementary description, the author advances in a very clear and intelligible manner, explaining the various operations of hand and slide rest work in a thoroughly satisfactory manner." - Mechanics. "The author does not presuppose any technical knowledge whatever in the reader, but begins by describing and naming the various parts and attachments of a lathe, so that a schoolboy can pick up the book and work his way through it without any difficulty. The illustrations are very numerous and well-executed." - Practical Engineer. "The several types of lathes, both for wood and metal turning, and their parts in detail, are fully described and illustrated, as also are the various operations of the latheman's art. Amateur turners will find in it many useful hints." - Popular Science News. "The small price and general excellence of this book will commend it to the large class of ambitious apprentices for whose benefit it has been written." - Boston Journal of Commerce. Excerpt: ...with a 3in. crank and used with a treadle, being heavy enough to continue in motion, notwithstanding the pressure of the tool, even when the latter is a broad plane-iron. It is necessary to use water; consequently, the stone must have a trough beneath, and this should be hinged at the further end so that it can be elevated by a wedge beneath, or suspended at the free end. The water poured into this can thus be raised to touchu the stone when in use, and lowered out of contact when the grinding is finished. The stone must not be left to soak in the water. Attached to the frame of the grindstone, and capable of some little adjustment as to height and distance, must be a strong rest of wood or ironu to assist in supporting and keeping the tool firmly in position. The Fig. 99, from Holtzapffel, will show at once the best form of mounted grindstone for the amateur's use, although he may fit up one on a similar plau at a considerably lower price than is charged for the one shown. Let it be observed, however, that a stone badly mounted, and which does not run truly, is not only a disgrace to the owner but absolutely useless. The greatest care, therefore, should be used in first setting it up and in afterwards keeping it in order. If the amateur can spare time and a few extra shillings, let him by all means discard the clumsy square axle and wedges. Let the central hole be plugged with a piece of boxwood bored truly at right angles with the flat face of the stone with an augur, and let FIG.100 the round axle be made with a fixed and a movable flange, as in the Fig. 100, where A is the stone, B the axle, with flange (0) fixed, and a second (D) made with a central hole, to enable it to be screwed against the stone by the nut E. F F are washers of...
