Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Altar: Or Meditations in Verse on the Great Christian Sacrifice The Writer perceived that there was no reason why the whole of this system might not be applied with equal propriety and fitness of adaptation to our own Communion Service: such suggestions or associations were in themselves devotional and edi fying; while at the same time, by a similar appro priation in our own Church, it might be rendered quite innocent, and free from any taint of idolatry or superstition; while, moreover, by introducing no Saints but those which we receive in common with ancient Christendom, it seemed to unite us in one beautiful and edifying Service with the Com munion of Saints growing together into one Body as partaking of that One Bread, bound toge ther in mystical union and fellowship, and holding the Head, from which all the Body having nourish ment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of god. Download or read book Journey to the Heart of Jesus written by R. L. Geiger Bsn and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey to the Heart of Jesus: A Bible Study and Meditation for Christians is a seven-week, day-by-day study that incorporates simple daily readings designed specifically for the average busy Christian's lifestyle. Included at the end of each week's readings are seven brief homework questions to render deeper understanding and further contemplation of the material read. This Bible study is intended for use in group studies and highly encouraged to be used in small groups for discussion and fellowship opportunities. Journey to the Heart of Jesus takes Christians on a journey through the covenants and sacrifices of salvation history. It spans from the dawn of time, as recorded in the Old Testament to the sacrifice and everlasting covenant of Jesus Christ, recorded in the New Testament. Evoking meditation on the sacrifice of Christ and its meaning in our lives, this study guides you through Scripture back to biblical times, to gain insight about the early Christian church. In so doing, it illustrates the foundation and indissolubility of Christ's church and His affirmation of unity in faith. www.theheartofjesus.co

Bavinck’s careful treatment includes explorations of the unifying power of a common (ecumenical) confession of faith, the blessing of the diversity of believers, and reasonable instruction for those facing persecution for publicly identifying with Christ. Theological, practical, straightforward, and devotional, The Sacrifice of Praise gives readers a fresh appreciation for the importance of confessing one’s faith. This is an updated English translation of the original Dutch edition and includes a new introduction and scriptural citations. “The Sacrifice of Praise gives us the impression of a spring flower, in the midst of the sharp, cold, fierce spring winds; an Elim in the desert of daily worries, hardships, quarrels, and murmurings. May the Lord God grant that it is the forerunner of a beautiful, refreshing, abundantly fruit-bearing summer.” —From a 1901 review in De Bazuin (a Dutch religious paper)

Book The Oxford Handbook of Victorian Medievalism

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Victorian Medievalism written by Joanne Parker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1859, the historian Lord John Acton asserted: 'two great principles divide the world, and contend for the mastery, antiquity and the middle ages'. The influence on Victorian culture of the 'Middle Ages' (broadly understood then as the centuries between the Roman Empire and the Renaissance) was both pervasive and multi-faceted. This 'medievalism' led, for instance, to the rituals and ornament of the Medieval Catholic church being reintroduced to Anglicanism. It led to the Saxon Witan being celebrated as a prototypical representative parliament. It resulted in Viking raiders being acclaimed as the forefathers of the British navy. And it encouraged innumerable nineteenth-century men to cultivate the superlative beards we now think of as typically 'Victorian'—in an attempt to emulate their Anglo-Saxon forefathers. Different facets of medieval life, and different periods before the Renaissance, were utilized in nineteenth-century Britain for divergent political and cultural agendas. Medievalism also became a dominant mode in Victorian art and architecture, with 75 per cent of churches in England built on a Gothic rather than a classical model. And it was pervasive in a wide variety of literary forms, from translated sagas to pseudo-medieval devotional verse to triple-decker novels. Medievalism even transformed nineteenth-century domesticity: while only a minority added moats and portcullises to their homes, the medieval-style textiles produced by Morris and Co. decorated many affluent drawing rooms. The Oxford Handbook of Victorian Medievalism is the first work to examine in full the fascinating phenomenon of 'medievalism' in Victorian Britain. Covering art, architecture, religion, literature, politics, music, and social reform, the Handbook also surveys earlier forms of antiquarianism that established the groundwork for Victorian movements. In addition, this collection addresses the international context, by mapping the spread of medievalism across Europe, South America, and India, amongst other places.
