Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alligator with the Red Eyes, is about an alligator whose eyes are very red and he is made fun of a lot because of this. Some people tease him a lot, and some of the kids are scared of his eyes and him because they think he is mean. But he is not, he is really a nice alligator, he is just not given a chance because people focus on his eyes before they get to know him. He finally finds a pair of sunshades to cover his eyes so they are not seen anymore. People are beginning to like him now, he is smiling more, and he is starting to feel like he fits in with the rest of the alligators. Although, the other alligators were friendly to him, it was just the guest that would visit the zoo, who was mean to him. Once the sunshades were on the alligators face, he promised the other alligators that he would take them off, for fear of losing them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intensity skyrockets when a few teenagers on vacation in the Everglades go exploring and stumble on a house used for importing and selling exotic animals. The Everglades were magical—a maze of canals snaking into the surrounding swampland, a wild with monster alligators everywhere. How, then, was Megan supposed to just sit back and not explore the place? The airboat ride out into the thick gray water-world was so beautiful, so calm—how quickly things had changed. She had begged Adam to take her and her siblings out on the boat. But where were Sydney and Luke now?Lost, like she was, of course, but hurt? Dead? It was her impulsiveness that had gotten them stranded out here and drew the poachers’ anger. She wrapped her arms more tightly about the baby orangutan in her lap. How could she live with herself if something happened to them? Would she even have the chance? The now-familiar sound of someone or something sloshing through the muck reached her ears. Who or what was coming? The orangutan bared his teeth at the unknown, and she closed her eyes. She didn’t want to know the answer. She was too injured to climb out of this hole, and calling for help could attract them. One way or another, she knew she wouldn’t be getting out of here alone. It was only a question of who would find her first.

With essays from fifty field biologists, this volume, edited by Martha L. Crump, presents a multifaceted yet intimate look at life in pursuit of knowledge about the natural world. From the beaches of Peru to the mountains of China, the stories in this collection place readers in the boots of field biologists as they watch, count, experiment, and survey. Some recall mishaps and misadventures—contending with leeches, dangling off a precipice while in a truck. Others tell of once-in-a-lifetime encounters—discovering a new frog species, spotting a rare snake. Together, these stories offer an understanding of what field biology is, what field biologists do, and how they go about doing it. Written with candor, warmth, and a dash of humor, the stories in Lost Frogs and Hot Snakes will encourage readers to appreciate the value of engaging with nature and of the amphibians and reptiles so critical to the vitality of our planet.

Book excerpt: The inspiring classic on the virtues of embracing the great outdoors from the national bestselling author of The Dog Who Came to Stay. Over the course of his career, Hal Borland wrote eight nature books and hundreds of “outdoor editorials” for the Sunday New York Times, extolling the virtues of the countryside. From his home on one hundred acres in rural Connecticut, Borland wrote of the natural wonders, both big and small, that surrounded him every day. Beyond Your Doorstep is his guide to venturing into the outdoors around your home, wherever it is, and discovering the countryside within reach. The beauty to be found in roadsides, meadows, woodlands, and bogs are explored in elegant prose. Borland takes up birds, animals, and plants—both edible and poisonous—and the miraculous ways in which they are threaded together throughout the natural world. Part introductory field guide and part incitement to exploration, Beyond Your Doorstep is a classic of nature writing and a must-read for anyone looking to renew his or her relationship to the outdoors.
