Book Punishment and Social Control

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas G. Blomberg
  • Publisher : Transaction Publishers
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9780202307015
  • Pages : 532 pages

Download or read book Punishment and Social Control written by Thomas G. Blomberg and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While crime, law, and punishment are subjects that have everyday meanings not very far from their academic representations, "social control" is one of those terms that appear in the sociological discourse without any corresponding everyday usage. This concept has a rather mixed lineage. "After September 11" has become a slogan that conveys all things to all people but carries some very specific implications on interrogation and civil liberties for the future of punishment and social control. The editors hold that the already pliable boundaries between ordinary and political crime will become more unstable; national and global considerations will come closer together; domestic crime control policies will be more influenced by interests of national security; measures to prevent and control international terrorism will cast their reach wider (to financial structures and ideological support); the movements of immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers will be curtailed and criminalized; taken-for-granted human rights and civil liberties will be restricted. In the midst of these dramatic social changes, hardly anyone will notice the academic field of "punishment and social control" being drawn closer to political matters. Criminology is neither a "pure" academic discipline nor a profession that offers an applied body of knowledge to solve the crime problem. Its historical lineage has left an insistent tension between the drive to understand and the drive to be relevant. While the scope and orientation of this new second edition remain the same, in recognition of the continued growth and diversity of interest in punishment and social control, new chapters have been added and several original chapters have been updated and revised.

This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalog provides a descriptive bibliography of books in the Ahmanson-Murphy Aldine collection at the University of California, Los Angeles, together with abbreviated notices of works not at UCLA. Handsomely produced, slipcased, and carefully annotated, this volume should become a major resource for Aldine studies and the history of the book. The Aldine Press revolutionized the production, accessibility, and use of the book. Founded by Aldus Manutius (ca 1452-1515), the press introduced a number of innovations that helped shape the development of the modern book, including italic type and the smaller, pocket-sized volume. By putting the Greek and Latin classics in a form that everyone could afford, it revolutionized scholarship: the uniform Aldine texts made comparison and collation universally available, and they were used in schools. Collectors were interested in the Aldine Press from the beginning; Jean Grolier acquired over two hundred of its publications, often having the books elegantly bound and handsomely illuminated. Since that time, the output of the Aldine Press has been sought after by scholars, book collectors, and librarians. Copies of its books are found in libraries all over the world, where they remain a prized possession and the object of much scholarly research. For thirty-two years, Franklin D. Murphy, who came to UCLA as its sixth chancellor, fostered the expansion of the Aldine collection and encouraged its growth. During the greater part of this long period he was joined in these endeavors by the Ahmanson Foundation, whose constant support permitted the collection to increase in both size and significance. Following Dr. Murphy's death, the Ahmanson Foundation continued its generous support for the expansion of the collection and, in addition, by means of a grant late in 1996, enabled the present catalog to come into existence. Book excerpt: Francesco Colonna's weird, erotic, allegorical antiquarian tale, "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili", together with all of its 174 original woodcut illustrations, has been called the first "stream of consciousness" novel and was one of the most important documents of Renaissance imagination and fantasy. The author -- presumed to be a friar of dubious reputation -- was obsessed by architecture, landscape and costume (it is not going too far to say sexually obsessed) and its woodcuts are a primary source for Renaissance ideas.

Book The Letters of The Younger Pliny

Download or read book The Letters of The Younger Pliny written by the younger Pliny and published by Lebooks Editora. This book was released on 2024-06-17 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Letters of Pliny the Younger, also known as the Epistles of Pliny the Younger, have been studied for centuries, as they offer a unique and intimate glimpse into the daily life of Romans in the 1st century AD. Through his letters, the Roman writer and lawyer Pliny the Younger (whose full name was Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus) discusses philosophical and moral issues; but he also talks about everyday matters and topics related to his administrative duties. One of these letters, Letter 16 from Book VI, addressed to Tacitus, holds unparalleled historical value. In it, Pliny describes the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, which destroyed the city of Pompeii. Many scholars claim that with his letters, Pliny invented a new literary genre: the letter written not only to establish pleasant communication with peers but also to publish it later. Pliny compiled copies of every letter he wrote throughout his life and published those he considered the best in twelve books. This edition presents selected letters chosen for their various characteristics and covering several books, focusing mainly on Books I, II, and III. The work is part of the famous collection: 501 Books You Must Read.

Book The Afterlife of Aldus

Download or read book The Afterlife of Aldus written by Jill Kraye and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 6 February 2015, the Warburg Institute marked the 500th anniversary of Aldus Manutius's death with a one-day colloquium on his extraordinary legacy. Rather than examining his own output, which has already received a vast amount of scholarly attention, the focus was on far less studied topics related to his later fame and reputation. This book presents revised versions of six papers from the colloquium, together with three additional contributions. The nine papers, which explore how the notion of 'Aldine books' has changed over 500 years in Europe and America, are arranged in three sections: the Aldine press after Aldus; private Aldine collections in early modern Europe; and Aldine book trade and collecting from the nineteenth century to the present. Also included in the volume is a catalogue of the exhibition 'Collecting the Renaissance: The Aldine Press (1494-1598)', organized in conjunction with the colloquium and displayed in the Treasures Galley of the British Library. Addressing a wide readership of scholars, booksellers and collectors, The Afterlife of Aldus aims to stimulate further research in areas which have not been sufficiently investigated, despite their importance for a comprehensive understanding of the long-lasting fortuna of Aldus and his publications. The conference, the exhibition and this volume have received generous financial support from the Bibliographical Society, CERL and Bernard Quartich Ltd.
