Download or read book Mole written by Steve Gronert Ellerhoff and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2020-04-13 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though moles are rarely seen, they live in close proximity to humans around the world. Gardeners and farmers go to great lengths to remove molehills from their fields and gardens; mole-catching has been a profession for the past two millennia. Moles are also close to our imagination, appearing in myths, fairy tales, and comic books as either wealthy, undesirable grooms or seekers of enlightenment. In Mole, Steve Gronert Ellerhoff examines moles in nature as well as their representation throughout history and across cultures. Balancing evolution and ecology with photographs and artworks, Ellerhoff provides a veritable mountain of new insight into this exceedingly private mammal.

Download or read book Library Mouse A World to Explore written by Daniel Kirk and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Sam the Library Mouse is back in this gentle story about facing fears and learning new things” (School Library Journal). One night in the library, Sam meets fellow mouse Sarah. Sam learns that Sarah is quite the explorer. She loves to scurry to the tops of shelves and explore the darkest corners of the building. Sam never climbs far up—he’s too afraid! He prefers to research subjects—such as exploration—and write about them. Sarah doesn’t know much about writing or research, but could reading and research help her learn more about the places she wishes to visit? Together this duo shows that, with teamwork, anything is possible. “The gorgeous, bright gouache illustrations are meticulously detailed and expressive. The story is an excellent way to introduce research to the youngest patrons, which, according to Sam, is “how you find out about things.” This visually appealing offering fits beautifully into the library curriculum.” —School Library Journal
Download or read book Child s Play written by Thomas D. Yawkey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984, a major purpose of this book was to bring together in a single volume, work that reflects the wide range of interests that social and behavioural scientists have in play, development and the environment. The intent of the book was to refine and extend concepts and methodologies within and beyond one’s usual area of study. The idea was that this formula and direction would yield novel information and fresh insights. The volume encompasses a wealth of topics concerning structural, functional, and pragmatic aspects of play during early childhood and childhood, and includes strong emphasis on methodological as well as substantive concerns. It was hoped that the chapters here would inspire a new generation of research extending knowledge both in theoretical and applied areas.

I Love My Bike is a picture book about a daughter learning to ride a bike with the help of her father. The story is told through wonderful watercolours from critically acclaimed artist Sam Usher, with words from children's poet Simon Mole. Celebrating both family relationships and being outdoors, this is the perfect read for families everywhere.
Download or read book Prelude to Literacy written by Maureen Crago and published by Carbondale : Southern Illinois University Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first in-depth study of a preschool child's interaction with picture and story books. Based on five years of intensive observation of the authors' daughter, Anna, the book provides detailed, verbatim records of Anna's questions and comments as she listened to books being read aloud. It is a fascinating scholarly contribution to those interested in language acquisition. The first part of the study presents Anna's reactions to six books, ranging from Where the Wild Things Are at two years to The Story of Doctor Dolittle at four-and-a-half. The authors analyze what Anna said and did, drawing on contextual material to make it clear that initially inexplicable or irrelevant remarks are not only logical but often indicative of underlying emotional dynamics as well. Part two describes Anna's reaction to fictional experience in her own play and spontaneous monologue, of which several examples are transcribed and analyzed in full. The third section begins with two chapters devoted to the visual dimension of Anna's book experience. In chapters dealing with humor, fantasy, plot, narrative, voice, identification, and emotion, the authors use their findings to shed new light on frequently asked but rarely answered questions: "What do children laugh at?" "Are some books too frightening for children?" "Is a happy ending vital in a story for young children?" "Can preschoolers understand the difference between fantasy and reality?"
