Download or read book The Thrilling True Adventures of Daniel Ellis written by Daniel Ellis and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 1867-01-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fought in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee, Daniel Ellis' war was no less bloody than that of soldiers in the east. As a "pilot" in the American Civil War, he guided Union soldiers, runaway slaves, deserting Confederates, and others from the mountains to the Union lines. Already a veteran of the Mexican-American War, with compromised health due to bouts with malaria caught in Mexico, Ellis nevertheless served throughout the war at great peril to his life. After the war, continued Confederate sympathies in Tennessee and the publication of this book continued to make life tenuous for Dan Ellis, as e was threatened many times. He lived into a ripe old age (80). James R. Gilmore found Ellis living in poverty and worked to get him more government compensation for his services in the Civil War. Charles Frazier used this book as a source when writing "Cold Mountain." For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE by clicking the cover above. Buy it today!

A Strategy for Action. “Life is full of good intentions, but for too many, our good intentions never become good actions—they don’t move us forward, draw us closer to God, or make a difference in the world. Good intentions are cans of paint that could have become amazing works of art…but never did.” —Daniel Day, in Ten Days Without Daniel Day could tell you all about his love for God and his desire to live as a follower of Jesus. Book excerpt: The Adventures of Daniel Boone The Kentucky rifleman by Uncle Philip (Francis Lister Hawks) Excerpt supporter of the household. In this way years rolled onward--the farm still enlarging and improving, Daniel still hunting, and the home one of constant peace, happiness, and plenty. At length the story of the success and comfort of the family brought neighbors around them. Different parts of the forests began to be cleared; smoke was soon seen rising from new cabins; and the sharp crack of other rifles than Daniel's was sometimes heard in the morning. This grieved him sadly. Most people would have been pleased to find neighbors in the loneliness of the woods; but what pleased others did not please him. They were crowding upon him; they were driving away his game: this was his trouble. But, after all, there was one good farmer who came into the region and made his settlement; which settlement, as it turned out, proved a happy thing for Daniel. This was a very worthy man named Bryan.

Book excerpt: The true adventures of David Fairchild, a turn-of-the-century food explorer who traveled the globe and introduced diverse crops like avocados, mangoes, seedless grapes—and thousands more—to the American plate. “Fascinating.”—The New York Times Book Review • “Fast-paced adventure writing.”—The Wall Street Journal • “Richly descriptive.”—Kirkus • “A must-read for foodies.”—HelloGiggles In the nineteenth century, American meals were about subsistence, not enjoyment. But as a new century approached, appetites broadened, and David Fairchild, a young botanist with an insatiable lust to explore and experience the world, set out in search of foods that would enrich the American farmer and enchant the American eater. Kale from Croatia, mangoes from India, and hops from Bavaria. Peaches from China, avocados from Chile, and pomegranates from Malta. Fairchild’s finds weren’t just limited to food: From Egypt he sent back a variety of cotton that revolutionized an industry, and via Japan he introduced the cherry blossom tree, forever brightening America’s capital. Along the way, he was arrested, caught diseases, and bargained with island tribes. But his culinary ambition came during a formative era, and through him, America transformed into the most diverse food system ever created. “Daniel Stone draws the reader into an intriguing, seductive world, rich with stories and surprises. The Food Explorer shows you the history and drama hidden in your fruit bowl. It’s a delicious piece of writing.”—Susan Orlean, New York Times bestselling author of The Orchid Thief and The Library Book

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wild new adventure from the author of The Yggyssey—“Pinkwater may be my single most favorite writer in the entire world” (Cory Doctorow). Big Audrey is a girl . . . with cat’s whiskers . . . and sort of cat’s eyes. But is there another cat-whiskered, sort of cat-eyed girl? Big Audrey waves goodbye to her friends Iggy, Neddie, Seamus, and Crazy Wig, in Los Angeles—and hitches a ride with bongo-playing-while-driving Marlon Brando across the country to Poughkeepsie, New York, city of mystery. She finds she has questions needing answers—and a bit of inter-plane-of-existence traveling to do. Readers who love the strange, the offbeat, and the just plain kooky will want to tag along with Big Audrey and her telepathic friend, Molly, on this “vastly entertaining” (Kirkus Reviews) road trip, as they try to solve the mystery of the cat-whiskered doppelganger . . . “Every character they encounter is crazier than the next—a 114-year-old woman named Chicken Nancy; a Catskill Mountain Giant; members of a secret brotherhood from an alternate Poughkeepsie—and every chance encounter leads them to another zany adventure. Mixing the absurd with the profound, Pinkwater’s odd narration will have even the most serious readers laughing at the chaos.” —Booklist

Book The Adventures of Don Chipote or When Parrots Breast Feed

Download or read book The Adventures of Don Chipote or When Parrots Breast Feed written by Daniel Venegas and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2000-04-30 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1928, and written by journalist Daniel Venegas, Las aventuras de Don Chipote is an unknown classic of American literature, dealing with the phenomenon that has made this nation great: immigration. It is the bittersweet tale of a greenhorn who abandons his plot of land (and a shack full of children) in Mexico to come to the United States and sweep the gold up from the streets. Together with his faithful companions, a tramp named Policarpo and a dog called Skinenbones. Don Chipote (whose name means "bump on the head") stumbles from one misadventure to another. Along the way, we learn what the Southwest was like during the 1920s: how Mexican laborers were treated like beasts of burden, and how they became targets for every shyster and lowlife looking to make a quick buck. The author, himself a former immigrant laborer, spins his tale using the Chicano vernacular of the time. Full of folklore and local color, Don Chipote is a must-read for scholars, students, and all who would become acquainted with the historical and economic roots, as well as with the humor, of the Southwestern Hispanic community. Ethriam Cash Brammer, a young poet and scholar, provides a faithful English translation, while Dr. Nicolás Kanellos offers an accessible, well-documented introduction to this important novel in 1984.
