Book excerpt: The Advance of Science in the Last Half-Century By Thomas Henry Huxley In fact, the history of physical science teaches (and we cannot too carefully take the lesson to heart) that the practical advantages, attainable through its agency, never have been, and never will be, sufficiently attractive to men inspired by the inborn genius of the interpreter of nature, to give them courage to undergo the toils and make the sacrifices which that calling requires from its votaries. That which stirs their pulses is the love of knowledge and the joy of the discovery of the causes of things sung by the old poets--the supreme delight of extending the realm of law and order ever farther towards the unattainable goals of the infinitely great and the infinitely small, between which our little race of life is run. Huxley, an English biologist and essayist, was an advocate of the theory of evolution and a self-proclaimed agnostic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years of American Science Ultima Thule more remote in thought and interest than are Hawaii or even the Philippines to - day. Then, as now, the nation was in the throes Of growing pains, acuter than now, because territorial expansion was more rapid; Texas had recently given its empire - an empire Of barren breadths and bloody bandits, according to the critics - and Florida had lately come to us from Spain; Iowa and Wisconsin had entered the family of states, and Oregon had become a troublesome territory; and the treaty of Guadalupe - Hidalgo had just been approved, bringing California and New Mexico (with most Of what is now Ari zona) into our possession - adding the care Of hopeless deserts and the control Of treacherous tribes and an alien population to the duties Of an overworked legislative and administrative government, and preparing the way for the witticism, Mex ico will be forgiven all if she will only take back her lands. In truth, there was danger, painfully manifest thirteen years later, Of disruption through overgrowth of the local interests and provincialisms always straining our theoretic union a danger happily removed forever a quarter century later by the railway and the telegraph, which gave a stronger unity than political faith or governmental doctrine. The progress Of the nation during the half century is be yond parallel. By normal growth and peaceful absorption without foreign conquest the population has trebled, and the national wealth has increased tenfold. The subjugation of natural forces has proceeded at a higher rate, and the exten sion Of knowledge and the diffusion of intelligence have gone forward more rapidly still. This advance, so great as to be grasped by few minds, is the marvel of human history. The world has moved forward as it never did before. Yet fully half of the progress of the world, during the last fifty years, has been wrought through the unprecedented energy of American enterprise and genius, guided by American science. Book Science the Endless Frontier

Download or read book Science the Endless Frontier written by Vannevar Bush and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science, the Endless Frontier is recognized as the landmark argument for the essential role of science in society and government's responsibility to support scientific endeavors. First issued when Vannevar Bush was the director of the US Office of Scientific Research and Development during the Second World War, this classic remains vital in making the case that scientific progress is necessary to a nation's health, security, and prosperity. Bush's vision set the course for US science policy for more than half a century, building the world's most productive scientific enterprise. Today, amid a changing funding landscape and challenges to science's very credibility, Science, the Endless Frontier resonates as a powerful reminder that scientific progress and public well-being alike depend on the successful symbiosis between science and government. This timely new edition presents this iconic text alongside a new companion essay from scientist and former congressman Rush Holt, who offers a brief introduction and consideration of what society needs most from science now. Reflecting on the report's legacy and relevance along with its limitations, Holt contends that the public's ability to cope with today's issues-such as public health, the changing climate and environment, and challenging technologies in modern society-requires a more capacious understanding of what science can contribute. Holt considers how scientists should think of their obligation to society and what the public should demand from science, and he calls for a renewed understanding of science's value for democracy and society at large.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress of Science, Its Origin, Course, Promoters, and Results The history of science is a sealed book, generally speaking. To the multitude of readers, including in it scientific students, an historical thread conducting them through the bewildering field of science cannot fail to prove a welcome gain. Men, as a rule, accept the fact of to-day as it stands without troubling themselves about the gradual steps taken in the past to reach it. They have neither the leisure nor the inclination to probe the obscurity of past ages themselves. They leave this task to the historian. Nor have they the inclination and leisure, pressed onward as they are by their daily work, to follow the historian if his account is at all bulky. Time fails them. Some, no doubt, have tried to become acquainted with the subject, but despite its extraordinary fascination, most have given. Book Science Progress in the Twentieth Century Vol 7

Download or read book Science Progress in the Twentieth Century Vol 7 written by H. E. Armstrong and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-26 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science Progress in the Twentieth Century, Vol. 7: A Quarterly Journal of Scientific Work and Thought; July 1912 to April 1913 By the range of the tide at a place is meant the excess of the depth of water available at high-water for oating a ship at the place above the corresponding depth at low-water. Until recently measurements Of the range of the tide were made only at places close to the coasts. They are, in fact, among the results furnished by the use of a tide-gauge. It was supposed, chie y on theoretical grounds, that the range of the tide in the open sea was much smaller. For a complete understanding of the tides, it is desirable to ascertain the range in the Open ocean and in partially enclosed seas, such as the English Channel, by direct Observation. It appears that ordinary methods of sounding are not available for this purpose and new instruments have been specially devised, one by Captain Adolf Mensing Of the Imperial German Navy, the other by Admirals Mostyn Field and purey-cust. The preliminary results obtained by the use of the instrument due to the latter are very striking, a range of tide in the Channel amounting to no less than 24 ft. Having been measured at a place about midway between Beachy Head and Dieppe. Systematic Observations Of this kind may be expected to throw much light on the nature of tidal oscillations. The extent to which the tide wave in the Atlantic Ocean, for instance, is an oscillation generated in that ocean by the direct action of the Sun and Moon, as contrasted with a progressive wave, generated in the Pacific and Southern Oceans and entering the Atlantic betweeen the promontories of South Africa and South America, is in some degree a matter of controversy. The systematic study of the tides in the open ocean, as distinct from the ebb and ow along the coasts, may be expected to go far towards settling the question; the whole value of the method of cotidal lines, as developed by Airy and Whewell, depends upon the answer that may be obtained.
