Book The Adivasis of Bangladesh

Download or read book The Adivasis of Bangladesh written by Richard W. Timm and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 1991-12-31 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL: The Adivasis, the tribal peoples of Bangladesh, face an uncertain future. Their rights to land are ignored o:r stolen from them, the forests they inhabit are disappearing, their labour is exploited, their languages, cultures and way of life are regarded as inferior. They face discrimination and frequent violence from landlords, police and forest guards. The Adivasis of Bangladesh outlines the perilous existence of the Adivasis. Written by Father Richard W. Timm, a resident of Bangladesh and human rights campaigner for 30 years, it gives an overview of Bangladesh and its peoples, summarizes the continuing urgent situation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and presents a detailed account of the problems facing the Adivasis of the plains - landlessness, ecological destruction, violence and discrimination. Particular attention is given to the Mandi (Garo) people. Published by the Minority Rights Group in conjunction with the Coordinating Council for Human Rights in Bangladesh ( CCHRB), this important report also makes specific and detailed recommendations to ensure a viable future for the Adivasis in a democratic Bangladesh. Please note that the terminology in the fields of minority rights and indigenous peoples’ rights has changed over time. MRG strives to reflect these changes as well as respect the right to self-identification on the part of minorities and indigenous peoples. At the same time, after over 50 years’ work, we know that our archive is of considerable interest to activists and researchers. Therefore, we make available as much of our back catalogue as possible, while being aware that the language used may not reflect current thinking on these issues.

Book Ethnicity and Adivasi Identity in Bangladesh

Download or read book Ethnicity and Adivasi Identity in Bangladesh written by Mahmudul H. Sumon and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the transitions in the adivasi identity as well as in the political representation of adivasi communities in Bangladesh. It traces the use of categories such as “primitive”, “tribe”, and “adivasi” in post-colonial Bangladesh, both in the political discourse and in everyday life. The volume studies the history of these essentialized categories used for indigenous communities within the hierarchies of power and identity. It also analyses the diverse articulations of indigeneity through ethnographic narratives, exploring the formations of newer traditions and identity. The author highlights the persistence of the terms “simple” and “primitive” in contemporary discourses while also sharing examples of complex mediations and appropriation of these categories by adivasi groups in Bangladesh. This book will be of interest to researchers and students of sociology, social ethnography, social and cultural anthropology, indigenous studies, exclusion studies, development studies, political sociology, and South Asian studies.

Book Revisiting the Rights of the Adivasis in Bangladesh

Download or read book Revisiting the Rights of the Adivasis in Bangladesh written by Alida Saqi and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The indigenous peoples (Adivasis in case of Bangladesh) of Bangladesh have been facing non-recognition under the legal framework of the country, i.e. the Constitution of Bangladesh. The hegemonic approach- Bangalee nationalism- introduced by the 15th amendment of the Constitution has added up to the historical struggle for recognition of the Adivasis. The thesis focuses on some practical issues and finds out the existence of the Adivasis rights in Bangladesh. The assimilation and integration process of the Adivasis exists in many ways, among them denial of recognition is main that leads to injustice. The rights of the Adivasis are assessed based on the rights of the 'ethnic minorities' and the 'backward section' as they are termed so in the State legislations. The thesis, taking a practical approach compares the indigenous peoples' situation with Botswana. It also, provides for some measures that can be taken by the State, the Adivasis, and the international community to ensure justice." --

Book Land Rights of the Indigenous Peoples of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Bangladesh

Download or read book Land Rights of the Indigenous Peoples of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Bangladesh written by Rajkumari Chandra Kalindi Roy and published by IWGIA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little is know about the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh (CHT), an area of approximately 5,089 square miles in southeastern Bangladesh. It is inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Bawm, Sak, Chakma, Khumi Khyang, Marma, Mru, Lushai, Uchay (also called Mrung, Brong, Hill Tripura), Pankho, Tanchangya and Tripura (Tipra), numbering over half a million. Originally inhabited exclusively by indigenous peoples, the Hill Tracts has been impacted by national projects and programs with dire consequences. This book describes the struggle of the indigenous peoples of the Chittagong Hill Tracts region to regain control over their ancestral land and resource rights. From sovereign nations to the limited autonomy of today, the report details the legal basis of the land rights of the indigenous peoples and the different tools employed by successive administrations to exploit their resources and divest them of their ancestral lands and territories. The book argues that development programs need to be implemented in a culturally appropriate manner to be truly sustainable, and with the consent and participation of the peoples concerned. Otherwise, they only serve to push an already vulnerable people into greater impoverishment and hardship. The devastation wrought by large-scale dams and forestry policies cloaked as development programs is succinctly described in this report, as is the population transfer and militarization. The interaction of all these factors in the process of assimilation and integration is the background for this book, analyzed within the perspective of indigenous and national law, and complemented by international legal approaches. The book concludes with an updateon the developments since the signing of the Peace Accord between the Government of Bangladesh and the Jana Sanghati Samiti (JSS) on December 2, 1997.

Book Adivasis Migrants and the State in India

Download or read book Adivasis Migrants and the State in India written by Jagannath Ambagudia and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the contested relationship between Adivasis or the indigenous peoples, migrants and the state in India. It delves into the nature and dynamics of competition and resource conflicts between the Adivasis and the migrants. Drawing on the ground experiences of the Dandakaranya Project – when Bengali migrants from erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) were rehabilitated in eastern and central India – the author traces the connection between resource scarcity and the emergence of Naxalite politics in the region in tandem with the key role played by the state. He critically examines the way in which conflicts between these groups emerged and interacted, were shaped and realised through acts and agencies of various kinds, as well as their socio-economic, cultural and political implications. The book explores the contexts and reasons that have led to the dispossession, deprivation and marginalisation of Adivasis. Through rich empirical data, this book presents an in-depth analysis of a contemporary crisis. It will be useful to scholars and researchers of political studies, South Asian politics, conflict studies, political sociology, cultural studies, sociology and social anthropology.
