Book The Acid Leaching of Nickel and Copper Sulphidic Ore in the Presence of Pyrite

Download or read book The Acid Leaching of Nickel and Copper Sulphidic Ore in the Presence of Pyrite written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments carried out under atmospheric pressure and temperature (25 degrees centigrade) and sterile conditions show that the dissolution rate of nickel and copper from a pyrrhotite-pentlandite-chalcopyrite ore in a lixiviant of sulphuric acid is greatly enhanced in the presence of pyrite. At a pH value of 1,8 and in the presence of pyrite of equal mass to that of the ore, the recoveries of nickel and copper improved dramatically (21 and 80 per cent respectively). At a pH value of 4,0 the recovery of nickel was enhanced, but the chalcopyrite was refractory. A galvanic mechanism is probable, but cannot be proved from these experiments. The economic implications of the results are discussed.

Download or read book Sulfate Minerals written by Charles N. Alpers and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 40 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry compiles and synthesizes current information on sulfate minerals from a variety of perspectives, including crystallography, geochemical properties, geological environments of formation, thermodynamic stability relations, kinetics of formation and dissolution, and environmental aspects. The first two chapters cover crystallography (Chapter 1) and spectroscopy (Chapter 2). Environments with alkali and alkaline earth sulfates are described in the next three chapters, on evaporites (Chapter 3), barite-celestine deposits (Chapter 4), and the kinetics of precipitation and dissolution of gypsum, barite, and celestine (Chapter 5). Acidic environments are the theme for the next four chapters, which cover soluble metal salts from sulfide oxidation (Chapter 6), iron and aluminum hydroxysulfates (Chapter 7), jarosites in hydrometallugy (Chapter 8), and alunite-jarosite crystallography, thermodynamics, and geochronology (Chapter 9). The next two chapters discuss thermodynamic modeling of sulfate systems from the perspectives of predicting sulfate-mineral solubilities in waters covering a wide range in composition and concentration (Chapter 10) and predicting interactions between sulfate solid solutions and aqueous solutions (Chapter 11). The concluding chapter on stable-isotope systematics (Chapter 12) discusses the utility of sulfate minerals in understanding the geological and geochemical processes in both high- and low-temperature environments, and in unraveling the past evolution of natural systems through paleoclimate studies. The review chapters in this volume were the basis for a short course on sulfate minerals sponsored by the Mineralogical Society of America (MSA) November 11-12, 2000 in Tahoe City, California, prior to the Annual Meeting of MSA, the Geological Society of America, and other associated societies in nearby Reno, Nevada. The conveners of the course (and editors of this volume of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry), Alpers, John Jambor, and Kirk Nordstrom, also organized related topical sessions at the GSA meeting on sulfate minerals in both hydrothermal and low-temperature environments.

Book The Leaching of Base Metals from the Calcines Produced by the Roasting of Pyrite Concentrates

Download or read book The Leaching of Base Metals from the Calcines Produced by the Roasting of Pyrite Concentrates written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of gold and uranium plants in South Africa concentrate the pyrite in the ore or residue by flotation, and roast the concentrate for the production of sulphuric acid. The calcine produced, which is predominantly hematite, is generally subjected to cyanidation for the recovery of gold and silver that would normally not have been recovered in high yield from the primary concentrate. The calcines often contain economically significant quantities of copper, nickel, cobalt, and uranium. Prior treatment of the calcine for the recovery of these metals would be desirable in terms of the value of the products and also in terms of the possible increased gold recovery in the subsequent cyanidation of the leach residue. Several processes for the leaching of the base metals from plant calcines have been investigated, and an important general conclusion is that an adequate recovery of the base metals requires that a large proportion of the iron should also be extracted. This observation led to a more extensive investigation of the kinetics of the leaching of various iron oxides. The application of electrochemical theory and techniques resulted in a fuller understanding of the various factors that govern the rate of leaching of iron oxides. As a result of this fundamental work, alternative treatment schemes that should yield more efficient extraction from calcines were suggested. Several of these possibilities were investigated, and the most promising were found to require reducing conditions during the leach, or prior partial reduction of the calcine to magnetite or wustite. The effects of various process variables such as the type and concentration of the acid, the temperature, the residual sulphur in the calcine, and the source of the calcine were investigated. The effect of prior treatment of the calcine on subsequent gold recovery by cyanidation was also investigated for a number of the calcines.

Book Recent Advances in the Leaching of Sulphides and the Precipitation of Iron

Download or read book Recent Advances in the Leaching of Sulphides and the Precipitation of Iron written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in the leaching of sulphide concentrates and in the associated area of iron precipitation are examined. Sherritt Gordon's technology of pressure leaching with oxygen and sulphuric acid is being applied commercially to zinc concentrates. A Zn recovery of over 98 per cent is achieved, and the associated pyrite is largely unaffected; elemental sulphur is the principal sulphidic product. Leaching processes with ferric chloride or cupric chloride, or both, are being applied to a wide variety of sulphide concentrates. Duval's CLEAR cupric chloride leach process for copper concentrates has been evaluated at the demonstration-plant scale, and many other processes using FeCl3 or CuCl2, or both, for copper have been piloted. Several chloride leaching processes for lead or pyritic zinc concentrates have also been tested successfully at the pilot level. All the processes stress the advantages of the formation of elemental sulphur and the relative lack of pyrite attack. Equally important advances have been made in the elucidation of the fundamental leaching reactions involved. Technologies for the precipitation of jarosite, goethite, and hematite are being used routinely for the control of iron in both sulphate and chloride media, and efforts are currently being made to control metal losses (Pb, Zn, Cu, Ag, etc.) associated with these precipitates. Although ongoing research has clarified many aspects of iron precipitation, it has yet to find large-tonnage uses for the various iron precipitates.
