Book THE ABSURD ABC an Absudly Funny look at the world of Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales

This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Absurd ABC is an absurdly funny and satirical look at the world of Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales more aimed at adults than children. One of the most creative periods in the history of children’s books took place in the second half of the nineteenth century. The “Father of the illustrated children’s book”, Walter Crane, (1845-1915) was not only one of the most prolific illustrators in the Victorian era, but was also an artist and decorative designer in the fields of wallpaper, glass, ceramics, textile and interior design that still influences designers today. The subjects of many of Walter Crane’s books were nursery rhymes and fairy tales, and among his finest and most popular works were his primers and alphabet books. The Absurd A.B.C. was published in 1874, a time when Crane was at the very top of his form. In the preface to these books, Bryan Holme wrote that, “there could be no better way of learning one’s ABCs than through either of these books.” The year 1863 was a vital turning point in Crane’s career, when he was introduced to Edmund Evans (1826–1905), a prominent English wood engraver and color printer, who was able to print a wide range of color schemes and popularize the production of illustrated children’s books. Evans employed Crane to illustrate covers for the publisher Frederick Warne & Co., in the yellow-bound Sixpenny Toybook Series. After 1866, Crane designed for publisher George Routledge & Sons’ Aunt Mavor’s Picture Books (later known as the Sixpenny Toy Series) and Shilling Series (later called Walter Crane’s Toy Books). The Absurd A.B.C. features entertaining verses along with colorful illustrations. Crane’s designs were based on his observations of young children; he believed that good illustrations would stimulate children’s interest in reading books and help them to learn. Crane thus illustrated a set of English nursery rhymes along with comic touches, like the cow jumping over the moon and the cat playing the fiddle in the page with letters A, B and C. Most of his illustrations proposed that young children love seeing most things in profile and bright frank colors. He also suggested that children are not concerned with three dimensions, so his illustrations appeared as flattened representations, with figures as silhouettes with no organized spatial scheme. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities. ============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: A, APPLE, Alphabet pie, B, BABY, Mr Bunting, rabbit skin, hunting, C, CAT, fiddle, Heigh Diddle Diddle, D, DAME, E, Englishman, F, Frog, wooing, woe, G, Goosey Gander, upstairs, old man, prayers, H, Humpty Dumpty, egg, wall, kings men, I, Inn, beer, J, Jack, Jill, tumble, hill, K, calm Kitty, dinner, dog, cat, L, Little man, gun, bullets, duck, M, Miss Muffet, spider, sat beside her, N, Numerous, children, mother, Shoe, O, Old person, cobwebs, P, Pie, blackbirds, sing, song, supper, king, Q, Queen Anne, R, Richard, Robert, S, Snail, tailors, flight, T, Tom, son, piper, U, Unicorn, coveted crown, Lion, V, Victuals, drink, W, WOMAN, three blind mice, X, hot cross buns, Y, Yankee Doodle, ancient, pony, town, Z, Zany, fool, school,

It doesn't always make sense, but don't let these rule-breaking silent letters defeat you! Download or read book K is for Knifeball written by Avery Monsen and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An adult parody of children’s alphabet books, offering horrible—but hilarious—advice, from the authors of All my friends are dead. In the humorous vein of Go the F**k to Sleep comes a laugh-out-loud collection of bad advice that turns the children’s alphabet book on its head. Adorable, illustrated characters lead readers down a path of poor decision-making, and alphabetical, rhyming couplets offer terrible life lessons. O is for opening things with your teeth, F is for setting Daddy’s wallet on fire, and R is for Raccoon (but definitely not for rabies). With plenty of playfully disastrous choices lurking around every corner, this compendium of black humor may be terrible for actual children, but it’s perfect for the common-senseless child in all adults. Plus, this is the fixed-format version, which looks nearly identical to the physical book. Praise for K is for Knifeball “Great fun for adults. The humorous illustrations, done in the style common in kids books, greatly add to the fun.” —Geek Alerts

Download or read book Russian Absurd written by Daniil Kharms and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A writer who defies categorization, Daniil Kharms has come to be regarded as an essential artist of the modernist avant-garde. His writing, which partakes of performance, narrative, poetry, and visual elements, was largely suppressed during his lifetime, which ended in a psychiatric ward where he starved to death during the siege of Leningrad. His work, which survived mostly in notebooks, can now be seen as one of the pillars of absurdist literature, most explicitly manifested in the 1920s and ’30s Soviet Union by the OBERIU group, which inherited the mantle of Russian futurism from such poets as Vladimir Mayakovsky and Velimir Khlebnikov. This selection of prose and poetry provides the most comprehensive portrait of the writer in English translation to date, revealing the arc of his career and including a particularly generous selection of his later work.

Book An ABC of Queen Victoria s Empire

Download or read book An ABC of Queen Victoria s Empire written by Antoinette Burton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ABC of Queen Victoria's Empire offers a provocative rewriting of Mrs. Ernest Ames' ABCs for Baby Patriots (1899). Whimsically illustrated for the nursery or primary school child, Ames' book demonstrates how deeply imperialism reached into popular culture during Victoria's reign. This book presents a rather darker view of Victoria's empire, beginning with the wars in Afghanistan and ending with Zam-Zammeh, the large-bore cannon that Kipling's hero sat astride at the opening of his 1901 novel, Kim. It signposts some of the key events, concepts, places and people that shaped the turbulent ground of empire across the long 19th century, providing a serious counterweight to the notion of imperial conquest as child's play. With each letter accompanied by a crisp yet historically nuanced account of its subject, this unique account is the perfect primer for students taking courses on global, imperial and British history.
