Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aborigines of Western Australia I am well aware that the subject is rather out of my line, and for this reason alone I can scarcely expect to do justice to the theme. Nevertheless, during my wander ings through Western Australia, in the capacity of a mining engineer, I came across a good many of the natives; and taking a profound interest in everything connected with the colony I resolved to set down in brief and simple form such facts as I could glean regarding this most curious specimen of the human race. I lay no more claim to originality than is due to one who has arranged his matter in his own way, and added a few thoughts suggested and accruing. Book The Aborigines of Australia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Aborigines of Australia Classic Reprint written by Richard Sadleir and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aborigines of Australia The government is administered by a council of old men, the young not being admitted. There is also a class that go from tribe to tribe, and their medicine men. The intelligence of the natives is quite underrated. Their skill and activity in war, and their subtlety as diplomatists, Mr. Lang says, are quite equal to the North American Indian. (having mixed with the North American Indians, I think this is rather exaggerated.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aborigines of Western Australia Regarding the aborigines of Western Australia, the material for even a short sketch is scanty, any treatise on the colony, however, would be incomplete without some reference to the people who, tor countless centuries, have roamed over this immense section of the great island-continent; and in advance of the general history which I contemplate producing, I am induced to publish in pamphlet form the following brief remarks. There exists a theory that all savages are the degraded descendants of civilized ancestors. If this be true, I think the Australian blackboy's period of enlightenment must have existed very far back in the dim twilight of ancient history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natives of Australia Savages, or, as they are better termed, peoples in the lower stages of culture, are studied by anthropological experts more and more closely every year, though in England and British possessions generally there is little money, public or private, available for expeditions, costly or otherwise; but the results of these researches appear in a form at once too technical and too bulky to attract the ordinary reader, who wishes to learn something of the life of these children of nature. In the British Isles, where there are few families but send some member into our dependencies as Government official, soldier, or colonist, interest in the subject races of the empire should be especially keen; the present series is intended to supply, in handy and readable form, the needs of those who desire to learn something of the life of these races, who, even if they are less civilised than ourselves, are perhaps not less worthy of study than beetles and jellyfish. Book The Aborigines of Victoria Vol 1

Download or read book The Aborigines of Victoria Vol 1 written by Robert Brough Smyth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aborigines of Victoria, Vol. 1: With Notes Relating to the Habits of the Natives of Other Parts of Australia and Tasmania The character of the following work requires that I should mention the circumstances under which I undertook the compilation of it. When, sixteen years ago, I was appointed Secretary of the Board for the Protection of the Aborigines, it seemed to me to be my duty to collect information respecting the customs of the people who had formerly owned the soil of Australia, and to make accurate drawings of their weapons and ornaments. I did not know then that I was commencing a work which would engage all my leisure for many years, and entail upon me a large amount of labor in correspondence alone. I had no idea, indeed, in the beginning, that the work would be a large one; but even if it had been possible to have foreseen that, and to have anticipated the difficulties I have 'had to contend with in tracing various customs from one point to another, and in verifying by a number of examples statements that, unsupported, appeared at the first view highly improbable - still I should, on account of the interest of the questions that presented themselves, and from a sense of duty, have labored earnestly in performing the task. For the proper and efficient treatment of such subjects as I have attempted to deal with, the mind should be wholly devoted to the consideration of them - unembarrassed by other onerous duties - or free, at least, from the anxieties that are inseparable from an official position in a new country. And this compilation should be judged rather as a series of sketches, written in such intervals of time as were available, than as a scientific work pre tending to completeness.
