Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Native Tribes of South Australia The object of this publication is to preserve and to place before the public, in a collected form, some of the few accounts which have been written respecting the native tribes of South Australia. They are not numerous, nor are they sufficiently complete to furnish the materials for a full history of those races which once inhabited the immense territory known as the Province of South Australia. No attempt was ever made by, or at the instance of the Colonial Government, to investigate and record the manners and customs of the Aborigines, nor to preserve their language; so that now only a comparatively imperfect idea can be formed of the South Australian natives as a whole. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aborigines of Western Australia I am well aware that the subject is rather out of my line, and for this reason alone I can scarcely expect to do justice to the theme. Nevertheless, during my wander ings through Western Australia, in the capacity of a mining engineer, I came across a good many of the natives; and taking a profound interest in everything connected with the colony I resolved to set down in brief and simple form such facts as I could glean regarding this most curious specimen of the human race. I lay no more claim to originality than is due to one who has arranged his matter in his own way, and added a few thoughts suggested and accruing. Book Aboriginal Australians

Download or read book Aboriginal Australians written by Richard Broome and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast sweeping story of Aboriginal Australia from 1788 is told in Richard Broome's typical lucid and imaginative style. This is an important work of great scholarship, passion and imagination.' - Professor Lynette Russell, Centre for Australian Indigenous Studies, Monash University In the creation of any new society, there are winners and losers. So it was with Australia as it grew from a colonial outpost to an affluent society. Richard Broome tells the history of Australia from the standpoint of the original Australians: those who lost most in the early colonial struggle for power. Surveying over two centuries of Aboriginal-European encounters, he shows how white settlers steadily supplanted the original inhabitants, from the shining coasts to inland deserts, by sheer force of numbers, disease, technology and violence. He also tells the story of Aboriginal survival through resistance and accommodation, and traces the continuing Aboriginal struggle to move from the margins of a settler society to a more central place in modern Australia. Broome's Aboriginal Australians has long been regarded as the most authoritative account of black-white relations in Australia. This fifth edition continues the story, covering the impact of the Northern Territory Intervention, the mining boom in remote Australia, the Uluru Statement, the resurgence of interest in traditional Aboriginal knowledge and culture, and the new generation of Aboriginal leaders. 'Richard Broome's historical analysis breaks the back of every theoretical argument about colonialism and establishes a clear pathway to understanding the present situation.' - Sharon Meagher, Aboriginal Education Development Officer, Women's and Children's Hospital, Adelaide

Book Native Tribes of the Northern Territory of Australia

Download or read book Native Tribes of the Northern Territory of Australia written by Baldwin Spencer and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-14 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native Tribes of the Northern Territory of Australia By Baldwin Spencer This is a comprehensive ethnography of the Australian Aborigines of Northern Australia, particularly the group known as the Kakadu, and the tribes of Melville Island. This is one of about half a dozen ethnographies written before the destruction of the Australian traditional cultures. This book is well written and, for the most part, presented from a non-ethnocentric (non-judgemental) point of view, which sets it apart from most of the other available public domain materal on this topic. As far as material on the traditions of these tribes, this is the only source text which we will ever have. Shortly after this was written, the traditional life of these tribes was devastated by the impact of European culture. This is a priceless record of a vanished stone-age civilization. Book Natives of Australia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Natives of Australia Classic Reprint written by N. W. Thomas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natives of Australia Savages, or, as they are better termed, peoples in the lower stages of culture, are studied by anthropological experts more and more closely every year, though in England and British possessions generally there is little money, public or private, available for expeditions, costly or otherwise; but the results of these researches appear in a form at once too technical and too bulky to attract the ordinary reader, who wishes to learn something of the life of these children of nature. In the British Isles, where there are few families but send some member into our dependencies as Government official, soldier, or colonist, interest in the subject races of the empire should be especially keen; the present series is intended to supply, in handy and readable form, the needs of those who desire to learn something of the life of these races, who, even if they are less civilised than ourselves, are perhaps not less worthy of study than beetles and jellyfish. Book The Native Tribes of Central Australia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Native Tribes of Central Australia Classic Reprint written by Baldwin Spencer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Native Tribes of Central Australia It has been the lot of one of us to spend the greater part of the past twenty years in the centre of the continent, and as sub-protector of the Aborigines he has had exceptional opportunities of coming into contact with, and of gaining the confidence of, the members of the large and important Arunta tribe, amongst whom he has lived, and of which tribe both of us, it may be added, are regarded as fully initiated members. In the month ofjuly, 1894, we met at Alice Springs, when the scientific expedition organised by Mr. W. A. Horn, of Adelaide, visited that part of the continent, and it was then that one of us gave to Dr. E. C. Stirling, the anthropologist of the expedition, notes which have since been published in the anthropological section of the report on the work of the expedition. This report included the results of the informa tion gained up to that time with regard to the Central tribes, and in respect to certain points, we have, to some extent, had to traverse the same ground in order to make our account as complete as possible but it was very evident that in regard to the customs and organisation of the tribe we were then only on the threshold of the inquiry, and at a subsequent time we determined to carry on the work. Antiquities of prehistoric man in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America have been fully investigated and carefully described by various learned men. It was considered wrong to kill or use for food animals of the same totem as cne's self. Book The Aborigines of Victoria Vol 1

Download or read book The Aborigines of Victoria Vol 1 written by Robert Brough Smyth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aborigines of Victoria, Vol. 1: With Notes Relating to the Habits of the Natives of Other Parts of Australia and Tasmania The character of the following work requires that I should mention the circumstances under which I undertook the compilation of it. When, sixteen years ago, I was appointed Secretary of the Board for the Protection of the Aborigines, it seemed to me to be my duty to collect information respecting the customs of the people who had formerly owned the soil of Australia, and to make accurate drawings of their weapons and ornaments. I did not know then that I was commencing a work which would engage all my leisure for many years, and entail upon me a large amount of labor in correspondence alone. I had no idea, indeed, in the beginning, that the work would be a large one; but even if it had been possible to have foreseen that, and to have anticipated the difficulties I have 'had to contend with in tracing various customs from one point to another, and in verifying by a number of examples statements that, unsupported, appeared at the first view highly improbable - still I should, on account of the interest of the questions that presented themselves, and from a sense of duty, have labored earnestly in performing the task. For the proper and efficient treatment of such subjects as I have attempted to deal with, the mind should be wholly devoted to the consideration of them - unembarrassed by other onerous duties - or free, at least, from the anxieties that are inseparable from an official position in a new country. And this compilation should be judged rather as a series of sketches, written in such intervals of time as were available, than as a scientific work pre tending to completeness. Book Grammar of the Narrinyeri Tribe of Australian Aborigines Classic Reprint

Download or read book Grammar of the Narrinyeri Tribe of Australian Aborigines Classic Reprint written by George Taplin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grammar of the Narrinyeri Tribe of Australian Aborigines Any one who has ever undertaken to gather up the grammar of an unwritten and barbarous language, will appreciate the difficulties which have to be encountered. Inquiries are useless when addressed to minds upon whom the idea of grammar never dawned. Expressions are heard having a certain force, and it is only after years of careful observation that those expressions can be analyzed, and their true character discerned; and this difficulty is increased when, as in the language of the Narrinyeri, ellipsis and abbreviations abound. The Rev. H. A. E. Meyer, a Lutheran Missionary, made a brave attempt to master the grammar of this language in 1843, and with some success; but yet his attempt presents a great number of ludicrous mistakes to one better acquainted with it. I found I had to rely on my own observations if I was to gain any correct knowledge of the language. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eaglehawk and Crow: A Study of the Australian Aborigines Including an Inquiry Into Their Origin and a Survey of Australian Languages IN entering upon a study of the Australian aborigines, the question Who are they meets one upon the very threshold. Is the common belief correct that the lowly barbarians whose last vestiges are now rapidly melting away are the real indi genes? Or is their being so called the result of hasty careless Observation and imperfect knowledge? To call them the abori gines is convenient, especially as they have from their first appearance in history been so called, and as at a first view they seem homogeneous and without rival claimants to the dis tinction; but it will be easy to prove that the title does not strictly belong to them.
