Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many Christians recognize the abiding value of the Old Testament as God's Word they stay away from studying it because they see it as a difficult and forbidding subject. In this completely revised and expanded edition of God’s Word to Israel Joseph Jensen incorporates the latest scholarship using a combination of the historical, literary, and thematic approaches to present a unified treatment—one that with even a modest degree of effort will produce rich rewards. By selecting the most important matters, rather than attempting to cover every aspect of the Old Testament message, Jensen has given them the space and emphasis they deserve.

Book excerpt: “Abide in me.” John 15:4 Do you yearn for life-giving, intimate communion with God? The Abide Bible is designed to help you experience the peace, hope, and growth that come from encountering the voice and presence of God in Scripture. Every feature in Abide is designed to teach and develop Scripture-engagement habits that help you know the power and spiritual nourishment of abiding in Christ. Created in partnership with Bible Gateway and the Taylor University Center for Scripture Engagement, The Abide Bible’s features include book introductions and practical Scripture-engagement prompts based on five ways of interacting deeply with the Bible: Praying Scripture: Pattern your prayers after biblical texts, personalizing the prayers and gaining language for the thoughts and emotions you want to express. Picture It: Place yourself in a biblical narrative as a bystander or participant in important events. Journaling: Focus and reflect on Scripture and its meaning for your life, opening yourself to God’s voice as you ponder. Engage Through Art: Consider a classic piece of art—photograph, sculpture, painting—and let it deepen your meditations on scriptural truths. Contemplate: Follow the church’s longstanding practice of reading, meditating on, praying, and contemplating a passage of Scripture in order to experience God’s presence through the words of the Bible.

Book The Permanent Value of the Old Testament

Download or read book The Permanent Value of the Old Testament written by Charles Foster Kent and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past generation the Old Testament has commanded equally with the New the enthusiastic and devoted study of the great body of biblical scholars throughout the world. Two out of every three graduate students in our universities who specialize in the general field of biblical literature choose the Old as the special centre of their work. At the same time the tendency of the rank and file of the Christian church within the past decade has undoubtedly been to neglect the older Testament. Preachers as a rule select less than a fourth of their texts from it; the prevailing courses of Bible study devote proportionately less time to it; and teachers and scholars in the great majority of cases turn to the Old Testament with much less enthusiasm than they do to the New. Why are these two great currents setting in opposite directions, and what are the causes of the present popular neglect of the Old Testament? If the Old Testament should be relegated to a second place in our working canon of the Bible, let us frankly and carefully define our reasons. If, on the other hand, the prevailing apathy and neglect are due to ignorance of the real character and value of the Old Testament, let as lose no time in setting ourselves right.
