Book A History of the 90th Division Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the 90th Division Classic Reprint written by George Wythe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the 90th Division The twenty-second division of the A. E. F. To arrive in France, the 9oth Di vision stands tenth in amount of artillery captured, thirteenth in number of machine guns captured, and fourteenth in both prisoners captured and total ad vance against the enemy. It was picked as one of the nine combatant divisions in the original Army of Occupation in Germany along with the most veteran organizations of the Expeditionary Forces. It did not fall to the lot of the goth Division to play a spectacular part in the war. It cannot boast that it was the first to carry the Stars and Stripes to the Western front. Fate did not decree that the Division should have a part in stopping the German rush for Paris. The reputation of a division is largely a matter of length of battle experience, coupled with Opportunity. The missions assigned to the 90th Division were difficult, prosaic ones, and the Division can be paid the highest military tribute - that it fulfilled every task which it was called upon to perform. Every objective was taken; not an inch of territory was yielded to the enemy; not a man straggled from his organization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The 47th (London) Division, 1914-1919: By Some Who Served With It in the Great War It is to these men who foresaw and planned the British Territorial Force that the thanks of the victorious nations are largely due. The Territorial Force stood in 1915 between the dead Regular Army and the living Kitchener Armies that fought the Battle of the Somme and enabled the war to be ultimately won. A few of these same far-seeing men and their younger successors have here and now a clear vision of the future. Book A Short History of the 6th Division

Download or read book A Short History of the 6th Division written by Thomas Owen Marden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the 6th Division: Aug. 1914 March 1919 This short history has been compiled mainly from the War Diaries. My reason for undertaking the task is that there was no one else to do it, the units composing the Division being scattered far and wide, and there being no Divisional habitat with local historians as in the case of Territorial and New Army Divisions. My object is that all who served with the Division for any period between 1914 - 1919 may have a record to show that they belonged to a Division which played no inconspicuous part in the Great War. Book On the Battlefield of Memory

Download or read book On the Battlefield of Memory written by Steven Trout and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2010-09-02 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a detailed study of how Americans in the 1920s and 1930s interpreted and remembered the First World War. Steven Trout asserts that from the beginning American memory of the war was fractured and unsettled, more a matter of competing sets of collective memories—each set with its own spokespeople— than a unified body of myth. The members of the American Legion remembered the war as a time of assimilation and national harmony. However, African Americans and radicalized whites recalled a very different war. And so did many of the nation’s writers, filmmakers, and painters. Trout studies a wide range of cultural products for their implications concerning the legacy of the war: John Dos Passos’s novels Three Soldiers and 1919, Willa Cather’s One of Ours, William March’s Company K, and Laurence Stallings’s Plumes; paintings by Harvey Dunn, Horace Pippin, and John Steuart Curry; portrayals of the war in The American Legion Weekly and The American Legion Monthly; war memorials and public monuments like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; and commemorative products such as the twelve-inch tall Spirit of the American Doughboy statue. Trout argues that American memory of World War I was not only confused and contradictory during the ‘20s and ‘30s, but confused and contradictory in ways that accommodated affirmative interpretations of modern warfare and military service. Somewhat in the face of conventional wisdom, Trout shows that World War I did not destroy the glamour of war for all, or even most, Americans and enhanced it for many.
