Book Electronic Structure Dynamics and Quantum Structural Properties of Condensed Matter

Download or read book Electronic Structure Dynamics and Quantum Structural Properties of Condensed Matter written by Jozef T. Devreese and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1984 Advanced Study Institute on "Electronic Structure, Dynamics and Quantum Structural Properties of Condensed Matter" took place at the Corsendonk Conference Center, close to the City of Antwerpen, from July 16 till 27, 1984. This NATO Advanced Study Institute was motivated by the research in my Institute, where, in 1971, a project was started on "ab-initio" phonon calculations in Silicon. I~ is my pleasure to thank several instances and people who made this ASI possible. First of all, the sponsor of the Institute, the NATO Scientific Committee. Next, the co-sponsors: Agfa-Gevaert, Bell Telephone Mfg. Co. N.V., C & A, Esso Belgium·, CDC Belgium, Janssens Pharmaceutica, Kredietbank and the Scientific Office of the U.S. Army. Special thanks are due to Dr. P. Van Camp and Drs. H. Nachtegaele, who, over several months, prepared the practical aspects of the ASI with the secretarial help of Mrs. R.-M. Vandekerkhof. I also like to. thank Mrs. M. Cuyvers who prepared and organized the subject and material index and Mrs. H. Evans for typing-assist ance. I express particular gratitude to Mrs. F. Nedee, who, like in 1981 and 1982, has put the magnificent Corsendonk Conference Center at our disposal and to Mr. D. Van Der Brempt, Director of the Corsendonk Conference Center, for the efficient way in which he and his staff took care of the practical organization at the Conference Center.

Book A Mathematical Introduction to Electronic Structure Theory

Download or read book A Mathematical Introduction to Electronic Structure Theory written by Lin Lin and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2019-06-05 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on first principle quantum mechanics, electronic structure theory is widely used in physics, chemistry, materials science, and related fields and has recently received increasing research attention in applied and computational mathematics. This book provides a self-contained, mathematically oriented introduction to the subject and its associated algorithms and analysis. It will help applied mathematics students and researchers with minimal background in physics understand the basics of electronic structure theory and prepare them to conduct research in this area. The book begins with an elementary introduction of quantum mechanics, including the uncertainty principle and the Hartree?Fock theory, which is considered the starting point of modern electronic structure theory. The authors then provide an in-depth discussion of two carefully selected topics that are directly related to several aspects of modern electronic structure calculations: density matrix based algorithms and linear response theory. Chapter 2 introduces the Kohn?Sham density functional theory with a focus on the density matrix based numerical algorithms, and Chapter 3 introduces linear response theory, which provides a unified viewpoint of several important phenomena in physics and numerics. An understanding of these topics will prepare readers for more advanced topics in this field. The book concludes with the random phase approximation to the correlation energy. The book is written for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students, specifically those with mathematical backgrounds but without a priori knowledge of quantum mechanics, and can be used for self-study by researchers, instructors, and other scientists. The book can also serve as a starting point to learn about many-body perturbation theory, a topic at the frontier of the study of interacting electrons.

Book Three Dimensional Electron Microscopy of Macromolecular Assemblies

Download or read book Three Dimensional Electron Microscopy of Macromolecular Assemblies written by Joachim Frank and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-02 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cryoelectron microscopy of biological molecules is among the hottest growth areas in biophysics and structural biology at present, and Frank is arguably the most distinguished practitioner of this art. CryoEM is likely over the next few years to take over much of the structural approaches currently requiring X-ray crystallography, because one can now get good and finely detailed images of single molecules down to as little as 200,000 MW, covering a substantial share of the molecules of greatest biomedical research interest. This book, the successor to an earlier work published in 1996 with Academic Press, is a natural companion work to our forthcoming book on electron crystallography by Robert Glaeser, with contributions by six others, including Frank. A growing number of workers will employ CryoEM for structural studies in their own research, and a large proportion of biomedical researchers will have a growing interest in understanding what the capabilities and limits of this approach are.
