Bringing attention to persons, places, and events of historical significance, the book focuses on the Fourth of July as it has been commemorated over the span of more than two centuries, starting with the first celebrations: public readings of the Declaration of Independence that occurred within days of its signing. Biographical sketches feature presidents (and how each celebrated the Fourth) and other politicians, famous soldiers, educators, engineers, scientists, athletes, musicians, and literary figures. Other topics include parks, monuments and statues dedicated on the Fourth; famous speeches and the personalities behind their stories; and general subjects of interest including education, abolition, temperance, African Americans, Native Americans, wars, transportation and holiday catastrophes.

Book excerpt: This is a book about Americans. Not the ones brunching in Park Slope or farming in Wranglers or trading synergies in a boardroom; they are not executives or socialites. They are not the salt of the earth. Nor are they huddled masses yearning to breathe free. These are the others of the everyday, the Americans no one sees. These are the brown and bland ones who understand the good, tough money in working a double, who know which end of a joint to hit. They can find Karachi on a map. They know a shortcut to Ikea. They can land a punchline. These are their poems. In The 44th of July, Jaswinder Bolina offers bracing and often humorous reflections on American culture through the lens of an alienated outsider at a deliberately uncomfortable distance that puts the oddities of the culture on full display. Exploring the nuances of life in an America that doesn't treat you as one of its own, yet whose benefits still touch your life, these exquisitely crafted poems sing in a kaleidoscopic collaging of language the mundane, yet surreal experience of being in between a cultural heritage of migration and poverty and daily life in a discriminatory yet prosperous nation. Both complicit in global capitalism and victims of the inequality that makes it possible, these are the Americans who are caught in a system with no clear place for them. Bolina opens the space to include the excluded, bringing voice and embodied consciousness to experiences that are essential to Americanness, but get removed from view in the chasms between self and other, immigrant and citizen.

Book Historical Record of the Forty Fourth Or the East Essex Regiment of Foot

Download or read book Historical Record of the Forty Fourth Or the East Essex Regiment of Foot written by Adjutant-General's Office Thoma Carter and published by . This book was released on 1887 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history covers the period from the formation of the regiment in 1741 to its linking with the West Essex (56th Foot) in 1881, when it became the 1st Battalion the Essex Regiment. The East Essex began life as 55th Foot but in 1748 it was renumbered 44th, and this history is presented as a chronology, a year-by-year record of the regiment's services. There are no chapters; the list of contents form a diary showing principal events in each year, some years far more eventful than others. The narrative shows in the margin of each page the year in which the events being described took place, beginning with 1741 and the raising of the regiment, and finishing in 1881. In 1803 a second battalion was formed but disbanded in 1816 after Waterloo in which battle it fought as well as in several battles of the Peninsular War. The 1st Battalion, meanwhile, was fighting on the other side of the Atlantic in the war against the United States. There is plenty of detail in this history, one incident at Waterloo making unpleasant reading. Ensign Christie (not long promoted from Sergeant-Major) was carrying one of the colours when he was charged by a French lancer and severely wounded by a lance thrust which entered his left eye and penetrated to the lower jaw; despite the agony of his wound he still managed to frustrate the Frenchman's efforts to make off with the colour. From time to time names of officers present for duty are listed and the other rank strength. The regiment took part in the Crimean War, in the campaigns in Burma and in Afghanistan (1841/42) where, in the retreat from Kabul the regiment lost 22 officers and 632 other ranks killed (out of a total of 684); it also took part in the China War 1860 (Taku Forts). Of the sixty years from 1822 to 1881 the regiment was abroad for fifty Appendices list the succession of Colonels of the regiment and commanding officers, in the latter case giving brief notes on service details. They also provide the number, rank and name of all those soldiers who served in the trenches before Sebastopol throughout the siege, of those who were in the Crimea the whole time, and those who distinguished themselves in the Crimea and in China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 3 of 4. The January and July issues of the Indian Army List contain not only the distribution of officers on the active list of the Army in India, including officers of British army regiments, battalions etc stationed in India, but are supplemented by the addition of Orders of Knighthood, Honours and Awards, including Foreign Orders, by the non-effective officer list and the War Services of officers of the Indian Army. Details of each officer include dates of birth (except for wartime commissioned officers), date of first commission, of appointment to the Indian Army and dates of promotion. Officers are grouped according to their rank and by seniority within that rank, and are again shown under their regiments/battalions. In the case of British units, their date of arrival in India is shown, and with Indian units their date of formation and changes in title since, plus details of the backgrounds of men recruited, e.g. Sikhs, Punjabis, Dogras, Rajputs, etc. This army list also includes all native Viceroy Commissioned Officers - Subadar Majors, Subadars and Jemadars - and their war services, Major HQs and their staffs, divisional and brigade commanders and their staffs, schools, colleges, Administrative Departments of the Army are all shown. Non-regular Indian Defence Force units such as 22nd Bengal and North-Western railway Battalion, and the Indian Army Reserve of Officers are all there, along with British Warrant Officers serving in departments of the Indian Army. In 1914 there were 116 Indian and 10 Gurkha Regiments, all with one battalion apart from the cavalry, 32 Indian and one Gurkha regiment had been formed and the majority of the original regiments had raised second and sometimes third battalions. This splendid four-volume work reflects the tremendous contribution made by the Indian Army to the Empire's war effort. A full index is included.
