Book Altered States of Consciousness

Download or read book Altered States of Consciousness written by Marc Wittmann and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What altered states of consciousness—the dissolution of feelings of time and self—can tell us about the mystery of consciousness. During extraordinary moments of consciousness—shock, meditative states and sudden mystical revelations, out-of-body experiences, or drug intoxication—our senses of time and self are altered; we may even feel time and self dissolving. These experiences have long been ignored by mainstream science, or considered crazy fantasies. Recent research, however, has located the neural underpinnings of these altered states of mind. In this book, neuropsychologist Marc Wittmann shows how experiences that disturb or widen our everyday understanding of the self can help solve the mystery of consciousness. Wittmann explains that the relationship between consciousness of time and consciousness of self is close; in extreme circumstances, the experiences of space and self intensify and weaken together. He considers the emergence of the self in waking life and dreams; how our sense of time is distorted by extreme situations ranging from terror to mystical enlightenment; the experience of the moment; and the loss of time and self in such disorders as depression, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. Dostoyevsky reported godly bliss during epileptic seizures; neurologists are now investigating the phenomenon of the epileptic aura. Wittmann describes new studies of psychedelics that show how the brain builds consciousness of self and time, and discusses pilot programs that use hallucinogens to treat severe depression, anxiety, and addiction. If we want to understand our consciousness, our subjectivity, Wittmann argues, we must not be afraid to break new ground. Studying altered states of consciousness leads us directly to the heart of the matter: time and self, the foundations of consciousness.

This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Forewords by Albert Einstein - Recently Discovered - Electrons that become 'Entangled' learn about a partner Electron and never forget. Is this the first level of Consciousness in the universe? The author - Scientist, Michael Mathiesen believes it is and has penned an easy to understand explanation of the latest Particle Physics that shows how we are all 'FOOLED' by the smallest things in the universe on a daily basis - even minute by minute. If you have ever wondered why it is so difficult to overcome your "FATE" - this may be the book for you. The book is the most intense and detailed explanation of how the universe is formed that you will ever encounter. However, at the same time, the concepts are made extremely easy to understand. Albert Einstein said: "The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible." In other words, when you strip out all of the abstract mathematical junk about how things work, the basic concepts are easy to understand for anyone, not only Einstein and this author proves Einstein correct by showing how easy it is. When you fully understand the 4 States of Consciousness, your life becomes your own. Until you learn about the 4 states, your life will continue along at the mercy of random events. Do you feel it's time to take control of your life on an even higher plane of existence? If so, this may be the book for you. However, you should read this book only if you are curious about the basic foundation of the universe - how it's made - and why it is made the way it is. The author makes the case nicely that the entire reason the universe is made the way it is - is exclusively to support life. AND - You are included. If you are interested in your life and how it goes, this is the book for you. If you have no interest in life on Earth and in the universe as a whole, would like more information about the Creator, then this is NOT the book for you. It all starts at the Electronic State of Consciousness, literally, the electrons that are at home in your brain and make up your 'mind'. This moves up to the Rotational State of Consciousness, the energy created by billions upon billions of electrons that swirl about to form the atoms that make up your own life and the life of all other things. This moves up to the Vibrational State of Consciousness, the atoms revolving around each other to form the molecules that are the fundamental building blocks of all the mechanisms of you. The Vibrational State of Consciousness resonates throughout the universe in the form of 'Music'. When you feel it, you're there. All of this culminates in the 4th and highest state of Consciousness - the Feedback Loop. You know the 'Feedback Loop' as your ego. The 'I', the self. When you sense the world around you and make judgments about it, react to it, plan for the events in your life, doing whatever comes naturally every day, this is the 'Feedback Loop' where your own reactions to the trials in your life everyday is recorded. The 'Feedback' you give to the Source is what it's all about and why you were placed on this planet at this particular time. Giving greater and greater feedback, brings its own rewards. The proof of the theory is that predictions made by the theory are shown by others. Take the Final Proof challenge and apply these concepts in your own life. My prediction is that your life will improve beyond your wildest dreams. If so, all we ask is that you publish your own results in the form of a review. Learn how we're all part of the Feedback Loop, the 4th and highest state of Consciousness.

Book excerpt: Consciousness, the last great mystery for science, remains a hot topic. How can a physical brain create our experience of the world? What creates our identity? Do we really have free will? Could consciousness itself be an illusion? Exciting new developments in brain science are continuing the debates on these issues, and the field has now expanded to include biologists, neuroscientists, psychologists, and philosophers. This controversial book clarifies the potentially confusing arguments, and the major theories, whilst also outlining the amazing pace of discoveries in neuroscience. Covering areas such as the construction of self in the brain, mechanisms of attention, the neural correlates of consciousness, and the physiology of altered states of consciousness, Susan Blackmore highlights our latest findings. Book Sleep as a State of Consciousness in Advaita Ved nta

Download or read book Sleep as a State of Consciousness in Advaita Ved nta written by Arvind Sharma and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian philosophy bases itself on three states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. Deep sleep, or susupti, plays an important role in Advaita Vedanta, the major philosophical school that advocates a doctrine of pure consciousness. Explaining and savoring this paradox, this book shows how the concept of deep sleep can be used in Advaita Vedanta to reveal a philosophical insight, validate an argument, illustrate a moral, or adorn a tale. Arvind Sharma explores why sleep is a phenomenon that philosophers should be interested in and examines it in classical Hindu religious texts, including the Upanisads, and in foundational, early, and modern Advaita Vedanta.

Book Neurochemistry of Consciousness

Download or read book Neurochemistry of Consciousness written by Elaine K. Perry and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering book explores in depth the role of neurotransmitters in conscious awareness. The central aim is to identify common neural denominators of conscious awareness, informed by the neurochemistry of natural, drug induced and pathological states of consciousness. Chemicals such as acetylcholine and dopamine, which bridge the synaptic gap between neurones, are the 'neurotransmitters in mind' that form the substance of the volume, which is essential reading for all who believe that unravelling mechanisms of consciousness must include these vital systems of the brain.Up-to-date information is provided on: • Psychological domains of attention, motivation, memory, sleep and dreaming that define normal states of consciousness. • Effects of chemicals that alter or abolish consciousness, including hallucinogens and anaesthetics. • Disorders of the brain such as dementia, schizophrenia and depression considered from the novel perspective of the way these affect consciousness, and how this might relate to disturbances in neurotransmission. Book The 4 States of Consciousness

Download or read book The 4 States of Consciousness written by Michael Mathiesen and published by Michael Mathiesen. This book was released on 2016-10-09 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every living thing with a brain has some form of Consciousness, or an awareness of who or what they are and the role they play in the universe. But few of the living really know what to do with that information. Electrons make up the first state of Consciousness. We now know that they can learn about each other and bind together for life like a marriage in what's known as 'Entanglements.' Whenever the state of one 'Entangled' electron is changed, the other one in the pair knows about it and it changes instantly to show unification. This happens instantly no matter how far away the two may be from one another. How do they know? The only answer is 'Consciousness'. From there, the forces of Nature allow the Electrons to pass their subatomic level of Consciousness up to the level of Atoms, structured out of the building blocks of the electrons, protons, etc. From there, the Atoms, or Elements are able to pass up their form of Consciousness to the molecular level. Remember the Avogadro's Number? From the molecular level, molecules are able to pass on their level of Consciousness to all living things, the 4th and highest State of Consciousness for all living things - what I call the Feedback Loop. We are all part of that loop. It's a loop because even at the highest level of Consciousness, we still use Electrons to create and transport our thoughts throughout our brains. This book is an answer to some of the greatest questions of all time and they are: 'Where do we come from?' 'Why are we here?' and 'What can we do about it?'

Book The Mystery of Consciousness

Download or read book The Mystery of Consciousness written by John R. Searle and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been one of the most fundamental problems of philosophy, and it is now, John Searle writes, "the most important problem in the biological sciences": What is consciousness? Is my inner awareness of myself something separate from my body? In what began as a series of essays in The New York Review of Books, John Searle evaluates the positions on consciousness of such well-known scientists and philosophers as Francis Crick, Gerald Edelman, Roger Penrose, Daniel Dennett, David Chalmers, and Israel Rosenfield. He challenges claims that the mind works like a computer, and that brain functions can be reproduced by computer programs. With a sharp eye for confusion and contradiction, he points out which avenues of current research are most likely to come up with a biological examination of how conscious states are caused by the brain. Only when we understand how the brain works will we solve the mystery of consciousness, and only then will we begin to understand issues ranging from artificial intelligence to our very nature as human beings.

Book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind

Download or read book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind written by Julian Jaynes and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2000-08-15 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Book Award Finalist: “This man’s ideas may be the most influential, not to say controversial, of the second half of the twentieth century.”—Columbus Dispatch At the heart of this classic, seminal book is Julian Jaynes's still-controversial thesis that human consciousness did not begin far back in animal evolution but instead is a learned process that came about only three thousand years ago and is still developing. The implications of this revolutionary scientific paradigm extend into virtually every aspect of our psychology, our history and culture, our religion—and indeed our future. “Don’t be put off by the academic title of Julian Jaynes’s The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. Its prose is always lucid and often lyrical…he unfolds his case with the utmost intellectual rigor.”—The New York Times “When Julian Jaynes . . . speculates that until late in the twentieth millennium BC men had no consciousness but were automatically obeying the voices of the gods, we are astounded but compelled to follow this remarkable thesis.”—John Updike, The New Yorker “He is as startling as Freud was in The Interpretation of Dreams, and Jaynes is equally as adept at forcing a new view of known human behavior.”—American Journal of Psychiatry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rosenberg introduces a new paradigm called Liberal Naturalism for thinking about what causation is, about the natural world, and about how to create a detailed model to go along with the new paradigm. Book Human and Machine Consciousness

Download or read book Human and Machine Consciousness written by David Gamez and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consciousness is widely perceived as one of the most fundamental, interesting and difficult problems of our time. However, we still know next to nothing about the relationship between consciousness and the brain and we can only speculate about the consciousness of animals and machines. Human and Machine Consciousness presents a new foundation for the scientific study of consciousness. It sets out a bold interpretation of consciousness that neutralizes the philosophical problems and explains how we can make scientific predictions about the consciousness of animals, brain-damaged patients and machines. Gamez interprets the scientific study of consciousness as a search for mathematical theories that map between measurements of consciousness and measurements of the physical world. We can use artificial intelligence to discover these theories and they could make accurate predictions about the consciousness of humans, animals and artificial systems. Human and Machine Consciousness also provides original insights into unusual conscious experiences, such as hallucinations, religious experiences and out-of-body states, and demonstrates how ‘designer’ states of consciousness could be created in the future. Gamez explains difficult concepts in a clear way that closely engages with scientific research. His punchy, concise prose is packed with vivid examples, making it suitable for the educated general reader as well as philosophers and scientists. Problems are brought to life in colourful illustrations and a helpful summary is given at the end of each chapter. The endnotes provide detailed discussions of individual points and full references to the scientific and philosophical literature.
