Book The 2 ka Eruption of Misti Volcano Southern Peru The Most Recent Plinian Eruption of Arequipa s Iconic Volcano

Download or read book The 2 ka Eruption of Misti Volcano Southern Peru The Most Recent Plinian Eruption of Arequipa s Iconic Volcano written by Christopher J. Harpel and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Misti volcano’s last Plinian eruption, which happened ca. 2 ka, emplaced voluminous tephra-fall, pyroclastic-flow, and lahar deposits. Arequipa, located at the foot of the volcano, has a population of over 800,000 people and growing. Misti will erupt explosively again, and it is important to understand the past Plinian eruption. This Special Paper first provides a detailed description and analysis of the lahar deposits from the 2 ka eruption and the flows that emplaced them. Because Misti is located in an arid region, the authors have also included a detailed discussion of the paleoclimate conditions that provided the water for such voluminous lahars. The authors further delineate the complete eruption sequence for the pyroclastic-flow and tephra-fall deposits, providing a narrative of the eruption progression and dynamics. Finally, the book discusses the 2 ka eruption in the context of hazards from a future Plinian eruption and provides hazards maps for the different phenomena.

Book Stratigraphy Sedimentology and Eruptive Dynamics of the 2 ka Eruption of Misti Volcano Southern Peru

Download or read book Stratigraphy Sedimentology and Eruptive Dynamics of the 2 ka Eruption of Misti Volcano Southern Peru written by Christopher J. Harpel and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2-ka eruption of Misti volcano produced voluminous flowage deposits and a wide-spread tephra-fall deposit. The flowage deposits form large terraces within channels draining the south side of the volcano. All the channels drain into the city of Arequipa. Arequipa's city center is ~16 km from the summit of the volcano. The large proximal population and historical unrest make volcano hazards assessment critical at Misti. The 2-ka flowage deposits are previously identified as pyroclastic-flow deposits. Abundant sedimentological and textural evidence suggests that 0.04 km3 (~80%) of these deposits are lahar deposits. Pyroclastic flows melted ~0.06 km3 of snow and ice on the volcano triggering

Book Of Summits and Sacrifice

Download or read book Of Summits and Sacrifice written by Thomas Besom and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-11-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In perhaps as few as one hundred years, the Inka Empire became the largest state ever formed by a native people anywhere in the Americas, dominating the western coast of South America by the early sixteenth century. Because the Inkas had no system of writing, it was left to Spanish and semi-indigenous authors to record the details of the religious rituals that the Inkas believed were vital for consolidating their conquests. Synthesizing these arresting accounts that span three centuries, Thomas Besom presents a wealth of descriptive data on the Inka practices of human sacrifice and mountain worship, supplemented by archaeological evidence. Of Summits and Sacrifice offers insight into the symbolic connections between landscape and life that underlay Inka religious beliefs. In vivid prose, Besom links significant details, ranging from the reasons for cyclical sacrificial rites to the varieties of mountain deities, producing a uniquely powerful cultural history.

Download or read book Lava Flows and Domes written by Jonathan H. Fink and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers is based on a symposium held in 1987 at the Interna tional Union of Geology and Geodesy Congress in Vancouver, British Colum bia. The Symposium was planned as a follow-up to a session at the 1984 Geo logical Society of America Annual Meeting in Reno, Nevada, which dealt with the emplacement of silicic lava domes. In both cases, emphasis was placed on the physical and mechanical rather than chemical aspects of lava flow. The IUGG Symposium consisted of two lecture sessions, a poster session, and two discussion periods, and had 22 participants. The contributions to this volume are all based on papers presented in the various parts of the Sym posium. The motivation for studying lava flow mechanics is both practical and scientific. Scientists and government agencies seek to more effectively predict the hazards associated with active lavas. Recovering mineral resources found in lava flows and domes also requires an understanding of their emplacement. From a more theoretical standpoint, petrologists view lava studies as a way to directly observe the rheologic consequences of mixing crystals, bubbles, and solid blocks of country rock with silicate liquids. This information can then be used to constrain processes occurring in the concealed conduits, dikes, and chambers that feed flows and domes on the surface.
