Book The 1955 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Download or read book The 1955 Iowa Corn Yield Test written by Charles D. Hutchcroft and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This bulletin reports the results of the thirty-sixth annual Iowa Corn Yield Test. Similar tests have been conducted by the Iowa Crop Improvement Association in Cooperation with the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station since 1920. The purpose of these tests is to provide information to help Iowa farmers select the hybrids best adapted for their areas. More than 100 companies sell closed-pedigree hybrid seed corn in Iowa. Other individuals and companies produce and sell only open-pedigree hybrids. With so many hybrids available, it isn't easy to choose the ones best adapted to a particular farm or location. The function of the Iowa Corn Yield Test is to help make this task easier." -- p.3

Book The 1954 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Download or read book The 1954 Iowa Corn Yield Test written by Charles D. Hutchcroft and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The main purpose of the Iowa Corn Yield Test is to compare the performance of corn hybrids and to make the information available to Iowa farmers. In 1954 we tested 90 corn hybrids at each of three locations in the northern section of Iowa. ... One-hundred corn hybrids were compared in each of the other three sections of the state. The hybrids were planted at three locations in each section, but the district 10 field was not harvested because of drouth conditions and a poor stand. They hybrids entered in the 1954 test were planted on about 72 percent of the total Iowa corn acreage, according to results from a survey of farmers. Six characteristics of each hybrid were recorded and summarized. These were yield, stand, moisture content at harvest, root and stalk lodging, and dropped ears. You will find a performance record for each hybrid for these characteristics in the tables of data. An index listing the hybrids tested in 1954 and the name and address of each entrant is given in the back of the bulletin. When the seed was packeted for planted, each entry was given a number. The entries were known only by this number until after the plots were harvested and the calculations completed. Therefore, no person concerned with the test know the identity of any entry. The presentation of these results does not imply approval of these hybrids by the Iowa Crop Improvement Association or the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station." -- p. [2]

Book Handbook of Maize

Download or read book Handbook of Maize written by Jeff L. Bennetzen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-16 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maize is one of the world’s highest value crops, with a multibillion dollar annual contribution to agriculture. The great adaptability and high yields available for maize as a food, feed and forage crop have led to its current production on over 140 million hectares worldwide, with acreage continuing to grow at the expense of other crops. In terms of tons of cereal grain produced worldwide, maize has been number one for many years. Moreover, maize is expanding its contribution to non-food uses, including as a major source of ethanol as a fuel additive or fuel alternative in the US. In addition, maize has been at the center of the transgenic plant controversy, serving as the first food crop with released transgenic varieties. By 2008, maize will have its genome sequence released, providing the sequence of the first average-size plant genome (the four plant genomes that are now sequenced come from unusually tiny genomes) and of the most complex genome sequenced from any organism. Among plant science researchers, maize has the second largest and most productive research community, trailing only the Arabidopsis community in scale and significance. At the applied research and commercial improvement levels, maize has no peers in agriculture, and consists of thousands of contributors worthwhile. A comprehensive book on the biology of maize has not been published. The "Handbook of Maize: the Genetics and Genomics" center on the past, present and future of maize as a model for plant science research and crop improvement. The books include brief, focused chapters from the foremost maize experts and feature a succinct collection of informative images representing the maize germplasm collection.
