Download or read book The 1952 Iowa Corn Yield Test written by Charles D. Hutchcroft and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This bulletin reports the results of the 1952 Iowa Corn Yield Test in which the performance of 219 different corn hybrids was compared. The state was divided into four sections, each of which was subdivided into three districts. A test field was planted in each district. Each hybrid entry was tested in all three districts of a section. The map shows how we divided the state into sections and districts and the approximate location of the farm where the hybrids were compared. Any producer of hybrid corn seed was eligible to enter his corn in the test. The widely grown hybrids in each section also were entered by the Iowa Crop Improvement Association. In the back of the bulletin you will find an index listing hybrids tested in 1952. The index also indicates whether the hybrid is a single, three-way, double or multiple cross." -- p. [858]

Book The 1947 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Download or read book The 1947 Iowa Corn Yield Test written by Joseph Lee Robinson and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Iowa Corn Yield Test is conducted annually to provide impartial comparable performance records on a relatively large number of hybrid combinations. Each hybrid tested is ranked by a performance score based on held, dry matter content of grain, lodging resistance and the percentage of ears held on the stalks. In view of the present world food need, it is important that farmers plant hybrids adapted to their particular locality. The information presented gives a reliable estimate of the relative performance of a considerable number of hybrids when grown in different areas of Iowa." -- p. [865]

Book excerpt: "A windbreak, as we generally think of it in Iowa, is a narrow belt of trees planted to give the farmstead protection against winter winds. Much of Iowa's land is relatively level to gently rolling. there is little native timber except along rivers and streams. This combination permits northwesterly winter winds to make a clean sweep across th eland. Something is needed to break their force." -- p. [921]

Book Climate Vulnerability

Download or read book Climate Vulnerability written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 1086 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change has been the subject of thousands of books and magazines, scientific journals, and newspaper articles daily. It’s a subject that can be very political and emotional, often blurring the lines between fact and fiction. The vast majority of research, studies, projections and recommendations tend to focus on the human influence on climate change and global warming as the result of CO2 emissions, often to the exclusion of other threats that include population growth and the stress placed on energy sources due to emerging global affluence. Climate Vulnerability, Five Volume Set seeks to strip away the politics and emotion that surround climate change and will assess the broad range of threats using the bottom up approach—including CO2 emissions, population growth, emerging affluence, and many others—to our five most critical resources: water, food, ecosystems, energy, and human health. Inclusively determining what these threats are while seeking preventive measures and adaptations is at the heart of this unique reference work. Takes a Bottom-Up approach, addressing climate change and the threat to our key resources at the local level first and globally second, providing a more accurate and inclusive approach. Includes extensive cross-referencing, which is key to readers as new connections between factors can be discovered. Cuts across a number of disciplines and will appeal to Biological Science, Earth & Environmental Science, Ecology, and Social Science, comprehensively addressing climate change and other threats to our key resources from multiple perspectives

Book Economics of Research and Innovation in Agriculture

Download or read book Economics of Research and Innovation in Agriculture written by Petra Moser and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-10-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The challenges facing agriculture are plenty. Along with the world's growing population and diminishing amounts of water and arable land, the gradual increase in severe weather presents new challenges and imperatives for producing new, more resilient crops to feed a more crowded planet in the twenty-first century. Innovation has historically helped agriculture keep pace with earth's social, population, and ecological changes. In the last 50 years, mechanical, biological, and chemical innovations have more than doubled agricultural output while barely changing input quantities. The ample investment behind these innovations was available because of a high rate of return: a 2007 paper found that the median ROI in agriculture was 45 percent between 1965 and 2005. This landscape has changed. Today many of the world's wealthier countries have scaled back their share of GDP devoted to agricultural R&D amid evidence of diminishing returns. Universities, which have historically been a major source of agricultural innovation, increasingly depend on funding from industry rather than government to fund their research. As Upton Sinclair wrote of the effects industry influences, "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it." In this volume of the NBER Conference Report series, editor Petra Moser offers an empirical, applied-economic framework to the different elements of agricultural R&D, particularly as they relate to the shift from public to private funding. Individual chapters examine the sources of agricultural knowledge and investigate challenges for measuring the returns to the adoption of new agricultural technologies, examine knowledge spillovers from universities to agricultural innovation, and explore interactions between university engagement and scientific productivity. Additional analysis of agricultural venture capital point to it as an emerging and future source of resource in this essential domain"--
