Download or read book The Ghost of Perfection written by Joseph Haward and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who am I? Who are we? Simple yet profound questions. What does it mean to be human? Why does society sometimes make us feel inadequate and diminished as humans? Where does the church and religion slot into this sense of dehumanization? What are we doing to ourselves and to others to impede our journey as humans living to the fullest? Why does it feel as if violence and fear is the dominant narrative in this modern world? Who is Jesus? Again, a simple yet profound question. A question that can open the door to knowing what it truly means to be human, living a life of love and not fear and violence. With the help of ancient and modern thinkers, pioneer, church planter, and chaplain Joe Haward explores these questions in this provocative book and seeks to help us reconnect with our beautiful humanity.

Looking back on a century that witnessed the emergence of motion pictures to become, almost immediately, a dominant cultural force in our lives, this penetrating and provocative book argues that "movies (like cathedrals) cannot help but display the subconscious impulses oftheir society." From D.W. Griffith to the Marx Brothers to film noir, "what are conceived and consumed as innocent pop movies ... are in fact manifestations of wild horror, superstitious ignorance, fatalistic dread and bigoted savagery."
Download or read book Haunted by Paradise written by James Bernard Murphy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-01-07 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible today is weaponized by both liberals and conservatives, each side cherry-picking their favorite verses. Have you ever wondered why the Bible lends itself to supporting contradictory positions in moral debates--why even the devil quotes Scripture? If so, you will enjoy this book. Haunted by Paradise reveals the unity and coherence of the Bible in the light of paradise. The Bible begins in Eden and ends in the new Jerusalem--in between, the Bible is haunted by the memory of paradise lost and the hope for paradise regained. With paradise as the interpretive key, Murphy unlocks biblical ethics. He shows that there is no Old Testament ethics or New Testament ethics--only a unified biblical ethics. In sixteen short chapters, this book addresses urgent moral questions about issues ranging from capital punishment to war, including divine justice, homosexuality, marriage, nature, racism, patriarchy, and work. In each chapter, Murphy shows how the Bible negotiates the tension between divine ideals and human realities.

Download or read book The Demon Haunted World written by Carl Sagan and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2011-07-06 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prescient warning of a future we now inhabit, where fake news stories and Internet conspiracy theories play to a disaffected American populace “A glorious book . . . A spirited defense of science . . . From the first page to the last, this book is a manifesto for clear thought.”—Los Angeles Times How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don’t understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions. Casting a wide net through history and culture, Sagan examines and authoritatively debunks such celebrated fallacies of the past as witchcraft, faith healing, demons, and UFOs. And yet, disturbingly, in today's so-called information age, pseudoscience is burgeoning with stories of alien abduction, channeling past lives, and communal hallucinations commanding growing attention and respect. As Sagan demonstrates with lucid eloquence, the siren song of unreason is not just a cultural wrong turn but a dangerous plunge into darkness that threatens our most basic freedoms. Praise for The Demon-Haunted World “Powerful . . . A stirring defense of informed rationality. . . Rich in surprising information and beautiful writing.”—The Washington Post Book World “Compelling.”—USA Today “A clear vision of what good science means and why it makes a difference. . . . A testimonial to the power of science and a warning of the dangers of unrestrained credulity.”—The Sciences “Passionate.”—San Francisco Examiner-Chronicle
Download or read book Healing Haunted Histories written by Elaine Enns and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healing Haunted Histories tackles the oldest and deepest injustices on the North American continent. Violations which inhabit every intersection of settler and Indigenous worlds, past and present. Wounds inextricably woven into the fabric of our personal and political lives. And it argues we can heal those wounds through the inward and outward journey of decolonization. The authors write as, and for, settlers on this journey, exploring the places, peoples, and spirits that have formed (and deformed) us. They look at issues of Indigenous justice and settler “response-ability” through the lens of Elaine’s Mennonite family narrative, tracing Landlines, Bloodlines, and Songlines like a braided river. From Ukrainian steppes to Canadian prairies to California chaparral, they examine her forebearers’ immigrant travails and trauma, settler unknowing and complicity, and traditions of resilience and conscience. And they invite readers to do the same. Part memoir, part social, historical, and theological analysis, and part practical workbook, this process invites settler Christians (and other people of faith) into a discipleship of decolonization. How are our histories, landscapes, and communities haunted by continuing Indigenous dispossession? How do we transform our colonizing self-perceptions, lifeways, and structures? And how might we practice restorative solidarity with Indigenous communities today?

Download or read book Creon s Ghost Law Justice and the Humanities written by Tomain and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-16 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creon's Ghost examines the enduring problem of the relationship between man's law and a "higher" law from the perspective of core humanities texts and through discussion of hotly debated contemporary legal conundrums. Today, such issues as intelligent design in school curricula, same-sex marriage, and faith-based government grants are all examples of the interaction between man's law and some other set of moral principles. As these debates are considered in this book, the author uses texts such as Antigone and Plato's Republic and pairs them with the most important jurisprudence texts of the 20th century to explore different approaches to the contemporary conflict or court ruling under consideration. Creon's Ghost demonstrates that the humanities can both illuminate our understanding of contemporary problems and that "classic" texts can be read alongside jurisprudential texts, thus enriching our understanding of and appreciation for law.

Download or read book A Topical Guide to the Koran Sharia Law written by Robert Maddock and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 1009 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the 1734 translation of the Koran by George Sale. This translation is in King James English, making comparisons between it and the King James Bible easily. This is a topical guide that will take a word or short phrase and find it in every verse of the Koran where it appears. These verses are placed together so that the reader can readily determine the context and, therefore, the meaning of the word or phrase. In some instances such as the word “jihad,” which does not appear in the Sale translation, it is traced in the University of Michigan’s online translation of the Koran. There it appears thirteen times, but in only two does it mean an internal struggle. In the other eleven, it means warfare. When analyzing words and phrases in the Koran, it is important to know when they were received and written. It is also important to know that the Koran includes material that seems to come from other sources. This has been outlined in volume 2 of the 1,300 Years’ War. As noted in volume 1 of the 1,300 Years’ War, Muhammad (PBUH) has been thought by many for over 150 years to have suffered from temporal lobe epilepsy associated with visual and auditory hallucinations. These seizures last less than three minutes. It is, therefore, important to know which suras might have come from a single episode. A table shows this in volume 1 (table 8). Many scholars divide the Koran into four major periods: early Mecca (AD 610–615), mid-Mecca (AD 616), late Mecca (AD 617–621) and Medina (AD 622–632). The analysis of the verses in these periods found that militancy against non-Muslims progresses: 7.7 percent of the verses from early Mecca are militant. This rises to 10.6 percent in the mid-Mecca period, and 18.3 percent in the late Mecca period. It tops out at 29.3 percent in the Medina period. The colored version of the topical guide shows these periods in black, blue, green, and red. In the black and white edition, it shows these four periods of the Koran in plain italics, boldface italics, regular plain type, and boldface regular type. The reason this division is important is the doctrine of abrogation (2:106) given early in the Medina period. This states that verses given later may nullify verses given earlier. Thus, many peaceful verses given in the early parts of the Koran may be nullified by the “verse of the sword” (9:5) given later toward the end of the prophet’s life: “Slay the idolaters wherever you find them.” So far as I have been able to determine, there has been no stylistic analysis of the Koran. A person studying the Koran or the history of Islam will find this work most valuable.
Download or read book Holy Ghost Powered The Prayer of Faith and Deliverance by Praying and Confessing the Word of God written by Larry Wilson, The Servant of The Most High and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prayers in this book are designed to demolish all the wiles of the devil in our personal lives and in the lives of the members of our household. We need powerful prayers to abolish the works of the evil one in our lives. God's Word released through our mouth will cause his power to be manifested in our lives. He watches over his word to perform it. The Word of God is like the fire that burns, it is the hammer that breaks the rocks in pieces Jeremiah 23:29. For the weapons which we use are not earthly weapons but of the might of God by which we conquer rebellious strong holds, casting down imaginations, and every false thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and capturing every thought to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5. It is important that we, the believers, be strong in the LORD and in the power of his might. We walk and war in His strength, and this requires humility, and total dependence on God. We must depend on His Word and His Spirit to overcome the darkness of this world. Ephesians 6:12-13 For your conflict is not only with flesh and blood, but also with the angels, and with powers, and with the rulers of this world of darkness, the evil spirits under the heavens. Therefore, put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to meet the evil one, and being prepared you shall prevail. This was key to David's victories. David was a king who knew how to depend upon God. David won his battles and overcame all his enemies through the power and might of God. This was done by prayer, David knew how to reach God through prayer.
