Download or read book Structronic Systems Active Structures Devices and Systems written by Ardeshir Guran and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with electrostructural systems, particularly the interaction between the control of the structural and electrical (electronic) components. Structronics is a new emerging area with many potential applications in the design of high-performance structures, adaptive structures, high-precision systems, and micro-systems. As structures are increasingly being controlled by electronics, the problems of structural engineering can be separated less and less from those of electronic engineering and control engineering. This graduate-level book fills a gap in the literature by considering these problems while giving an overview of the current state of analysis, modelling and control for structronic systems. It is a coherent compendium written by leading experts in this new research area and gives readers a sophisticated toolbox that will allow them to tackle the modelling and control of smart structures. The inclusion of an extensive, up-to-date bibliography and index makes this volume an invaluable standard for professional reference.Because of the large number of contributions to the present volume, it has been subdivided into two parts, of which this is Part I. This book will be of interest to engineers, materials scientists, physicists and applied mathematicians. The synergistic integration of active (smart) materials, structures, sensors, actuators, and control electronics has redefined the concept of structures from a conventional passive elastic system to an active (life-like) structronic (structure ] electronic) system with inherent self-sensing, diagnosis, and control capabilities. Because of its multi-disciplinary nature, the development of structronic systems has attracted researchers and scientists from many disciplines, such as structures, materials, control, electronics, mathematics, manufacturing, electromechanics, and mechanics. In practical applications, this new structronic system can be used as a component of high-performance machines or structural systems, or be an integrated structure itself performing designated function(s).Most common active (smart) materials, such as piezoelectrics, shape-memory alloys, electro- and magneto-strictive materials, and polyelectrolyte gels have been reviewed in Part I. Application examples are also provided and research issues reported on. While the first part focuses primarily on materials and structures, Part II emphasizes control applications and intelligent systems. With the information provided in this two-volume book, scientists and researchers can easily grasp the state of the art of smart materials and structronic systems, and are ready to pursue their own research and development endeavors.

Download or read book Global Orthopedics written by Richard A. Gosselin and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-18 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Orthopedics: Caring for Musculoskeletal Conditions and Injuries in Austere Settings was conceived and written to be a unique reference for surgeons working in resource-limited environments. The first sections provide historical background, global public health perspectives of orthopedics, the role of culture, and a broad discussion of clinical topics that orthopedic surgeons rarely deal with in high-resource settings but that affect orthopedic care. Adult and pediatric trauma are presented in an anatomical format for easy reference, with a focus on the natural history and the best treatment methods within existing limitations. The chapters on musculoskeletal infections provide a focused discussion about these common debilitating conditions that is unavailable in any other single modern text. The non-infectious pediatric conditions section has been written for the non-specialist to handle selected developmental and early childhood orthopedic problems commonly seen in low-resource settings. Detailed chapters on reconstruction surgery, tumor management, amputations, and the orthopedic needs in the face of conflicts and natural disasters round out the text.
Download or read book Ultrafast Magnetism I written by Jean-Yves Bigot and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on Ultrafast Magnetism is a collection of articles presented at the international “Ultrafast Magnetization Conference” held at the Congress Center in Strasbourg, France, from October 28th to November 1st, 2013. This first conference, which is intended to be held every two years, received a wonderful attendance and gathered scientists from 27 countries in the field of Femtomagnetism, encompassing many theoretical and experimental research subjects related to the spins dynamics in bulk or nanostructured materials. The participants appreciated this unique opportunity for discussing new ideas and debating on various physical interpretations of the reported phenomena. The format of a single session with many oral contributions as well as extensive time for poster presentations allowed researchers to have a detailed overview of the field. Importantly, one could sense that, in addition to studying fundamental magnetic phenomena, ultrafast magnetism has entered in a phase where applied physics and engineering are playing an important role. Several devices are being proposed with exciting R&D perspectives in the near future, in particular for magnetic recording, time resolved magnetic imaging and spin polarized transport, therefore establishing connections between various aspects of modern magnetism. Simultaneously, the diversity of techniques and experimental configurations has flourished during the past years, employing in particular Xrays, visible, infra-red and terahertz radiations. It was also obvious that an important effort is being made for tracking the dynamics of spins and magnetic domains at the nanometer scale, opening the pathway to exciting future developments. The concerted efforts between theoretical and experimental approaches for explaining the dynamical behaviors of angular momentum and energy levels, on different classes of magnetic materials, are worth pointing out. Finally it was unanimously recognized that the quality of the scientific oral and poster presentations contributed to bring the conference to a very high international standard.

Download or read book Coding for Optical Channels written by Ivan Djordjevic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-05 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to adapt to the ever-increasing demands of telecommunication needs, today’s network operators are implementing 100 Gb/s per dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) channel transmission. At those data rates, the performance of fiberoptic communication systems is degraded significantly due to intra- and inter-channel fiber nonlinearities, polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), and chromatic dispersion. In order to deal with those channel impairments, novel advanced techniques in modulation and detection, coding and signal processing are needed. This unique book represents a coherent and comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of optical communications, signal processing and coding for optical channels. It is the first to integrate the fundamentals of coding theory with the fundamentals of optical communication.
Download or read book Glenohumeral Osteoarthritis in the Young Patient written by Brian M. Grawe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-20 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The management of glenohumeral arthritis in the young patient remains a challenging problem for the treating clinician. The activity demands seen in such patient populations require a unique understanding of what the goals of treatment are to ensure satisfied and sustainable outcomes. In addition, younger patients have a longer life expectancy and more active lifestyles, which can negatively impact the longevity of arthroplasty implants that are traditionally used in the older patient population. As such, the discovery and implementation of novel and anatomy preserving techniques continue to evolve to meet the demand of younger patients without compromising their outcomes. This practical text serves to educate the treating clinician on how to recognize and categorize glenohumeral osteoarthritis in young patients and offers insight into the various operative and non-operative treatment options. Opening chapters examine the prevalence and burden, etiology and evaluation of the condition, followed by chapters discussing the current non-invasive and non-operative approaches to treatment, such as injection therapy. The main complement of chapters are detailed descriptions of surgical approaches, from arthroscopy and cartilage reconstruction to total and reverse shoulder arthroplasty, stemless approaches and arthrodesis. A final chapter expands on future management strategies. Radiographs and intraoperative photos are provided to enhance the text. Presenting the state of the art for this increasingly common condition, Glenohumeral Osteoarthritis in the Young Patient is an ideal resource for orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine specialists alike.
