This volume traces the University of Rochester's development from a small college housed in a former hotel in 1850 to its place as a leading research university in 2005. The story is told in eight chapters, each of which chronicles the major issues and decisions the University's leaders faced. Highlights of the story include the University's founding in a city known as the first "western" boomtown; the university's relationship in the early twentieth century with Rochester benefactor George Eastman, which enabled the establishment of world-class schools of music and medicine; and the achievements of Rochester faculty members as researchers on war-related endeavors during World WarII. Author Janice Bullard Pieterse sets her history of the university in the context not only of the fortunes of its home city but of trends and issues in American higher education over the last 150 years. Janice Bullard Pieterse is a freelance writer and journalist in Rochester, New York.

Book excerpt: As one of the earliest settlements in America, Rowley was founded by Rev. Ezekiel Rogers in 1639. Few towns as small in population have given more to the nation than Rowley, with so many firsts making up its history-from the great Puritan migration voyage across the sea that Rogers shared with the nation's first printing press to Lorenzo Bradstreet's invention of the Bradstreet Sleeper, which later evolved into the Pullman sleeping car. Rowley has much to offer: scenes of the village, and the historic town common, or the "Training Place," where Benedict Arnold's expedition to Quebec encamped in 1775, the picturesque Glen Mills area with its 1642 stone arch bridge, and the site of the first fulling mill in the colonies (1642-1643), which manufactured the first cloth made in the Western world. The book displays images of country stores, wagon peddlers, and early gristmills and sawmills. It also shows shoe manufacturing, boatbuilding (at its peak in 1900), farming, and salt marsh haying. It truly brings to life another era in American history.

Download or read book Faith and Action written by Roger Antonio Fortin and published by Ohio State University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Based on extensive primary archival materials, Faith and Action is a comprehensive history of the Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati over the past 175 years. Fortin paints a picture of the Catholic Church's involvement in the city's development and contextualizes the changing values and programs of the Church in the region. He characterizes the institution's history as one of both faith and action. From the time of its founding to the present, the way Catholics in the archdiocese of Cincinnati have viewed their relationship with the rest of society has changed with each major change in society. In the beginning, while espousing separation of church and state and religious liberty, they wanted the Church to adapt to the new American situation. In the mid-nineteenth century Cincinnati Catholics dealt with a dominant Protestant culture and, at times, a hostile environment, whereas a century later it had become much more a part of the American mainstream. Throughout most of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries most Catholics saw themselves as outsiders. During the past fifty years, however, Cincinnati Catholics, like most of their counterparts in the United States, have felt more confident and viewed themselves as very much a part of American society"--Publisher's description

Book Firstborn

Book excerpt: Firstborn, which celebrates the legacy of Luis Fred Kennedy, his family and business, is a narrative that takes on a character of its own, larger than life. At the age of twenty one, after the sudden death of his father in 1930, Luis Fred became co-manager of Grace, Kennedy & Co. Ltd., a Jamaican enterprise founded by his father and Dr. John J. Grace in 1922. Serving as Governing Director (1947-1973), Luis Fred Kennedy laid the foundation for the company to become what it is today—a global consumer group, one of the largest and most innovative corporate entities in the Caribbean. The author portrays his father Luis Fred Kennedy to be a passionate nationalist, humanist, and advocate of private enterprise, one who had a positive and lasting impact on the political and economic history of Jamaica. Fred Kennedy interweaves the threads of family, business, and nation by combining historical research with his own personal stories, enhanced by interviews, illustrations, and photographs. Firstborn will interest those with ties to Jamaica or, more universally, anyone eager to learn the secrets of corporate leadership and of the characteristics of centenarian companies like GraceKennedy Ltd. that have prospered for one hundred years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of a coterie of dynamic women - not the brainchild of Reform Judaism's male leaders, as is often thought - Women of Reform Judaism has been a force in the shaping of American Jewish life since its founding as the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods in 1913. The synergy of Reform Judaism's universalist ideas and the women's emancipation movement in the early twentieth century made the synagogue auxiliary a natural platform for women to assume new leadership roles in their synagogues, in Reform Judaism, and in American society. These "sisterhoods" have stood for the solidarity among synagogue women as well as the commitment of these women to important social action issues. Called Women of Reform Judaism since 1993, this oldest federation of women's synagogue auxiliaries has grown from 52 temple sisterhoods to 500 and a membership of over 65,000 women, today a vibrant international women's organization. Women of Reform Judaism, in cooperation with The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives and Hebrew Union College Press, marks its centennial anniversary with this collection of new scholarly essays which looks back at its history in order to understand how the hopes and dreams of its founders have come to fruition. Armed with the rich archival resources of the American Jewish Archives, including Proceedings of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods, 1913-1955, eighteen scholars contributed essays on the spectrum of Women of Reform Judaism's activities, including their funding of Hebrew Union College during the Great Depression, their support for Jewish education through production of a substantial women's Torah commentary designed to edify lay people as well as scholars and clergy, their promotion of Jewish foodways and art through publication of cookbooks and support of synagogue gift shops, their invention of the Uniongram as a formidable fundraising tool on a par with the Girl Scout cookie, and their efforts to safeguard Jewish continuity through support of youth activities (NFTY).

Download or read book Time Longer Than Rope written by Charles M. Payne and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2003-08 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Time Longer than Rope unearths the ordinary roots of extraordinary change, demonstrating the depth and breadth of black oppositional spirit and activity that preceded the civil rights movement. The diversity of activism covered by this collection extends from tenant farmers' labor reform campaign in the 1919 Elaine, Arkansas massacre to Harry T. Moore's leadership of a movement that registered 100,000 black Floridians years before Montgomery, and from women's participation in the Garvey movement to the changing meaning of the Lincoln Memorial. Concentrating on activist efforts in the South, key themes emerge, including the underappreciated importance of historical memory and community building, the divisive impact of class and sexism, and the shifting interplay between individual initiative and structural constraints."--Publisher description.

Book Journals of the Century

Download or read book Journals of the Century written by Tony Stankus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 2002, gathers some of America's top subject expert librarians to determine the most influential journals in their respective fields. 32 contributing authors reviewed journals from over twenty countries that have successfully shaped the evolution of their individual specialties worldwide. Their choices reflect the history of each discipline or profession, taking into account rivalries between universities, professional societies, for-profit and not-for-profit publishers, and even nation-states and international ideologies, in each journal's quest for reputational dominance. Each journal was judged using criteria such as longevity of publication, foresight in carving out its niche, ability to attract & sustain professional or academic affiliations, opinion leadership or agenda-setting power, and ongoing criticality to the study or practice of their field. The book presents wholly independent reviewers; none are in the employ of any publisher, but each is fully credentialed and well published, and many are award-winners. The authors guide college and professional school librarians on limited budgets via an exposition of their analytical and critical winnowing process in determining the classic resources for their faculty, students, and working professional clientele.
