Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first century has witnessed an explosion of speculative fiction in translation (SFT). Rachel Cordasco examines speculative fiction published in English translation since 1960, ranging from Soviet-era fiction to the Arabic-language dystopias that emerged following the Iraq War. Individual chapters on SFT from Korean, Czech, Finnish, and eleven other source languages feature an introduction by an expert in the language's speculative fiction tradition and its present-day output. Cordasco then breaks down each chapter by subgenre--including science fiction, fantasy, and horror--to guide readers toward the kinds of works that most interest them. Her discussion of available SFT stands alongside an analysis of how various subgenres emerged and developed in a given language. She also examines the reasons a given subgenre has been translated into English. An informative and one-of-a-kind guide, Out of This World offers readers and scholars alike a tour of speculative fiction's new globalized era.
Download or read book That s Outside My Boat written by Charlie Jones and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sportscaster and New York Times–bestselling author shares a mantra for success that changed his life—and can change your business. When veteran television announcer Charlie Jones got assigned to the hinterlands of Olympic broadcasting to cover rowing, canoeing, and kayaking, he serendipitously discovered a powerful philosophy for focused living: That’s Outside My Boat. He learned that Olympic rowers never let anything outside their boat prevent them from achieving their goals. Wind, rain, sun, lane assignments, and broken oars were outside their boat, and therefore, simply did not exist. Here, Jones, with coauthor Kim Doren, shows how the world of business—and all aspects of life—can greatly benefit when this same perspective is applied. The book uses the power of the personal example to show how deciding what’s important and focusing on it fosters success. Bob Wright, vice chairman of General Electric; Terry Bradshaw, NFL broadcaster and TV personality; Jack Kemp, codirector of Empower America; Liz Dolan, former Nike corporate vice president; and many other business leaders apply this philosophy to their own experience in That’s Outside My Boat—a powerful tool for business and for life. “A veteran TV announcer finds in Olympic rowing a metaphor for focused living and working.” —Publishers Weekly “An Olympic-size lesson in focus.” —Inc.

Sample Book Insights: #1 Hefner was forty-five, and had been with hundreds of photogenic women since starting his magazine, but he enjoyed female companionship more than ever. He was a sex junkie with an insatiable habit. #2 Del’s life was a mess. He was a lawyer, and while he was very successful, his public visibility was creating a problem because he was also a sexual addict. He would initiate relationships with women, feeling that he was in love, but would desperately wish to be free after the initial sexual contact. #3 Del’s story is one of constant predicaments. His addictive behavior put him in situations where he was vulnerable to tremendous consequences. His degradation was only exceeded by the violation of his own principles. #4 Sexual addiction is similar to other forms of addiction. It is a pathological relationship with a mood-altering chemical. The addict substitutes a sick relationship with an event or a process for a healthy relationship with others.

It is located between Louisiana to the west, Arkansas to the north, Tennessee to the northeast, Alabama to the east, and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. Mississippi is the 32nd state to be admitted to the Union in 1817 and has an area of about 125,000 square kilometers. In this chapter, we will take an in-depth look at the geography, history, and culture of Mississippi. Geography Mississippi is a state crisscrossed by rivers and waterways, characterized primarily by agriculture and forestry. The Mississippi River flows along the western border of the state, while the Tennessee River flows through the northeast. The Pearl River flows through the southern part of the state and empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Mississippi also has numerous lakes, including Grenada Lake, Ross Barnett Reservoir, and Sardis Lake. The state has a subtropical climate zone with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average temperature in summer is 32 degrees Celsius, while the average temperature in winter is 7 degrees Celsius. History Mississippi has a rich history dating back to the Native Americans. The first inhabitants of the area were Native American tribes such as the Chickasaw, the Choctaw, and the Natchez. However, over time, French, Spanish and British also came to the region and fought for control of the area. Mississippi was an important source of cotton and other agricultural products during slavery, which led to the state becoming a major economic center. During the Civil War, Mississippi played an important role as a member of the Confederacy, which led to it being shaped later in the decades that followed by Union rebuilding and the civil rights movement. Culture The culture of Mississippi is diverse, ranging from music to art and cuisine. The state is known for its contributions to music, especially blues and jazz. Famed musician Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and Delta blues originated in the Mississippi Delta region. The blues and other genres of music are celebrated throughout the state, especially at the annual Mississippi Delta Blues & Heritage Festival in Greenville. Mississippi also has a rich culinary tradition, including traditional Southern cuisine. Some of the most popular dishes include fried chicken, barbecue, gumbo, cornbread, and sweet potato pie. Many of these dishes are served at festivals across the state. Finally, Mississippi is also known for its antebellum homes and historic sites. Many of these pre-Civil War properties have been preserved and are now used as museums. These include, for example, the Beauvoir estate, which served as the retirement home of the former President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis, and is now a museum. Also worth seeing are the antebellum houses in Natchez, which have been restored to their original form and give a glimpse into the life of the Southern aristocracy before the Civil War.
